This brings memories flooding back of anew school term and the chance to begin afresh with new booksand pens and of course my neatest handwriting. Well, for the firstpage at least – by page three it was usually illegible again, partlydue to all the red crosses and scribbled notes my teacher wouldleave me!That said, we grow wiser with age, don’t we? So, if you haven’talready, why not reach for a blank piece of paper and jot downthose resolutions – just because you broke them last year doesn’t mean it’sundoable. Optimism abounds this time of the year, so the time for a fresh start isnot one to be wasted... besides, the chance to break them is a long way off yet!As we enter 2014, at last we have reasons to be cheerful in Lincolnshire followingfive long years of austerity. We’re a long wayoff rebounding to the heady heights of the last decade, but we can certainly lookforward to a rosier twelve months ahead than we’ve had of late.Small businesses are starting to see the upturn once again and to maintain thatmomentum, after Christmas, independent retailers all over the county will beoffering some amazing bargains in their sales. What better excuse for a bit ofretail therapy – and you can add to this that you’re doing your bit to boost theeconomy.Of course, over the last few weeks many readers will have received excitingnews of someone close intending to tie the knot - so with this in mind, our latestissue is brimming with ideas for white weddings in 2014. We offer hints, tip andadvice for the big day - from venues to that all important dress. Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive procedure used to treat sufferers of conditions such as painful heel, tennis elbow, pain in the Achilles tendon and Plantar fasciitis.ESWT is carried out as an outpatient appointment and requires no injections, medication or surgery. Once the patient has been referred by their GP, the consultant can start the treatment after an assessment. It is normally offered to improve symptoms after conservative treatment such as physiotherapy has failed to help.Orthopaedic Surgeon Professor Maqsood explains: "During extracorporeal shock wave therapy, high energy sound waves are created and focused on the injury using a special pad. Shock waves are repeatedly applied to the injury area and break down any scar tissue ERHGEPGM½GEXMSRWMRXLIEVIE[LMGLMRWSQIcases the body is unable to repair itself. As the tissue is broken down by the shock wave, the body starts building up new tissue, replicating the body’s own self-healing process."A course of ESWT usually requires three sessions, each taking about 20 minutes, which in addition to the treatment includes advice on retraining of weak muscles related to the injury.Following the treatment, in most cases pain should lessen and should not be felt 8-12 weeks after the last session.ESWT offers advantages over traditional surgical methods including:Q No anaesthesiaQ Non-invasiveQ No medicationQ No surgeryQ Fast treatmentQ Fewer complicationsQ Virtually painless after treatmentQ Quick recovery and quick resultsESWT is just one of the range of orthopaedic treatments available to patients of BMI The Lincoln Hospital. With excellent patient satisfaction and infection rates, BMI The Lincoln Hospital is part of the BMI Healthcare group of private hospitals.Call 01522 578000 or XS½RHSYXQSVIor to book an appointment.BMI The Lincoln Hospital Nettleham Road Lincoln LN2 1QU bmihealthcare.co.uk/lincolnProfessor Mohammad Maqsood Professor Maqsood is a renowned trauma and orthopaedic surgeon trained to the highest level, performing total hip replacement, hip resurfacing, knee replacement, treatment for joint injury and cartilage repair.
