If you aren’t already having someof these ‘lunch-hour procedures’ (so-called for the speed and ease of havingthem done) then look around – some ofyour friends and colleagues almostcertainly are. Botox (a brand name and commonterm for Botulinum toxin) and dermalfillers are the most popular treatments.Although Botox has dominated themarket for years, dermal fillers aregrowing rapidly in popularity. In 2016,there were about 7.05 million injectionsof Botulinum toxin worldwide. The UK isnow the fastest growing market fordermal fillers, but with far less stringentregulations than in continental Europe orAmerica. However, unlike Botox, which asa prescription-only medicine can only becarried out by a prescriber or someoneworking under one, dermal fillers and fastbeing taken on by practitioners with nomedical training. “This is a very dangerous trend,”explains Dr Guin. “What many clients donot realise is that these fillers if incorrectlyplaced can block blood vessels whichcould ultimately lead to areas of fleshdying or even blindness.”Whilst this is extremely rare (1 in 5million treatments globally have led tothese complications), the first and onlycase of blindness as a result of fillers inthe lips was reported here in the UK thisyear. The advice gleaned from a study byBeleznay et al. published in the journalDermatologic Surgery was that theperson carrying them out should have a“firm knowledge of the vascular anatomy, and understand key prevention andmanagement strategies”. This in partrefers to a medicine called Hyaluronidasethat can be injected to ‘dissolve’ the filler. This is itself a prescription only medicineand so not available to less qualifiedclinicians. Dr Guin adds: “I have seen a rise inpatients approaching me to dissolve fillersthat have been badly placed, and tocorrect bad work, in part because thepeople carrying it out are not qualified todo this. It’s a worrying trend, andultimately costs the patients!”So why are so many people still havingthese treatments? Despite these rarecomplications, these are still very safeprocedures if done properly. A ‘lunch-break facelift’ using dermal fillers orBotox can take years off, saving the needfor a general anaesthetic. Dermal fillershave been being used on millions ofpatients worldwide for over 30 years, andBotox is the world’s most popular non-surgical treatment used on millions ofpeople worldwide since the 1980s – it isalso the most well researched minorcosmetic procedure, with an excellentsafety record, and no long-term effects. Botox works by temporarily freezingsmall muscles that can cause wrinkles. This can reduce wrinkles, reduce theappearance of jowls or even lift eyebrows,© Shutterstock / Olena Yakobchuk44-45_Layout 1 13/12/2017 13:09 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY45nose tips or mouth corners. It can even beused to reduce sweating. It is effective for upto six months, and can be carried out in ashort appointment with no downtime. The current gold standard Dermal filler ishyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurringcomponent in your skin, that holds water andthus plumpness which is injected withimmediate effect to plump, lift, define andvolumise. It can be used to define or volumiselips, add fullness back to the face, lift or definecheekbones, as well as re-contour noses andchins. Restylane and Juvederm are the twomarket leaders, and with approximately 30years of clinical data, these are extremely safeand reliable pharmaceutical products. Dr Guin is an expert in her field, havingwritten her dissertation on Botulinum toxinswith this work soon to be published inacademic journals. That said, all those sneaky glasses of sherry, extra portions of pudand choccies do end up putting pounds around themidriff. But no matter, January is the time for reflection, reinvention and trying not to break those resolutions. A switch to healthier food can be a tricky task afterChristmas because, while the calendar may havechanged, the contents of your fridge and cupboards willstay the same from one day to the next. Rather thanthrow this food away, it can instead be frozen, whileunopened goods can be donated to charities and foodbanks. But many of our Christmas favourites are prettyhealthy, and can be made into all manner of deliciousleftover meals, from turkey soup and stews, to vegetablestir fries. The list goes on and on.Once all those seasonal leftovers are finally out theway, it’s time to start buying the right kind of foodsagain. This means low fat proteins such as fish andpoultry, and plenty of plant-based alternatives, frombeans and pulses to Quorn and soy. As far as red meat isconcerned, it’s better to stick to leaner cuts and shoplocally where possible. This means it’ll be moreexpensive, but the animal’s quality of life, and thereforethe flavour of its meat, will be far superior. Better yet, why not jump on an increasingly populartrend and go vegan or vegetarian for the entirety ofJanuary. Yes, it’s a long month, but this positive changewill benefit your carbon footprint and have a massiveeffect on your health. You may even find yourself notwanting to go back to eating meat afterwards. As thelargest producer of fruit and veg in the country,Lincolnshire has some of the UK’s best produce and itwould be a shame to waste any of it. Exercise is another matter, as while experimenting inthe kitchen can be fun, summoning the will to get outand move can be difficult. A common Christmas presentis a spa retreat or gym membership, so get out there andtake advantage of them. Your local spa or gym is justperfect this time of year when there are storm clouds onthe horizon and the temperature is lingering in thebottom five degrees. The communal spirit can be alifeline when everything else is dark and gloomy, and thefestive buzz has long since passed. While indoor facilities are a godsend, it’s tough to beatthe feel of fresh air through your hair or the taste of acrisp morning breath. Sometimes, the best therapy andexercise can be a stroll on the beach or a trundlethrough the woods. Fortunately, our county caters toboth topographies, and are ready and waiting for youthis January. Get on upWith a brand new year upon us, there are no more excuses for shirkingexercise and eating all the wrong foods. Don’t worry about gettingstarted, Lincolnshire Today is all the motivation you need. 46-47_Layout 1 13/12/2017 13:06 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY47HEALTH & FITNESS© Shutterstock / goodluz 46-47_Layout 1 13/12/2017 13:07 Page 248 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYEngland has something of a love/hate relationship withthe badger, with its iconic black and white hide adorningThe Wildlife Trusts’ logo, the pages of The Wind in theWillowsand a fair few country roadsides. But the blamefor spreading bovine tuberculosis has been saddled onthe badger, though recent reports indicate it’s more anissue of cattle management. Though divisive, there’s no denyingthere’s a lot of badgers inLincolnshire, with the ‘Nature inthe UK’ guide fromcottages.com finding thatour county is the place tocome for any hoping tocatch a glimpse of theever-elusive badger in itsnatural environment. Although related tostoats, weasels and otters, the badger dwarfs them alland takes the top spot asEngland’s biggest land predator. They might be as common as thatother bemoaned beasty – the red fox –but badgers err more of the side of caution, sticking to strictly nocturnal activity and giving would-bewatchers the slip. Though its diet most certainly deserves its carnivorestatus, the badger has no qualms when it comes tomunching on plants, cereals and root tubers alongside abuffet of insects, earthworms, mammals and carrion. Kenneth Grahame might have portrayed the badgerWith the latest findings discovering an abundance of badgers inLincolnshire, there’s never been a better excuse to learn to love thesequintessential British beasties. Lincolnshirewildlifeas a grumpy loner in The Wind in the Willows, but thiscouldn’t be further from the truth. Badgers are generallypeace loving animals and have even been known toshare their burrows with rabbits and red foxes. But peaceand love will crumble when provoked and so it is withthe badger. Looking to feed the seemingly innatecruelty in the human heart, badger baitingbecame a popular blood sport, thoughone that has since been outlawed.Black, white and red all overindeed. Although the badger hasits share of friends andenemies, Lincolnshire islargely in favour of theanimal, with the CountyCouncil spearheading acampaign in 2014 to banbadger culling on all itsowned land in the wake ofthe TB scare. Even afterdamaging flood defences aroundthe River Steeping in Wainfleet, theoffending badgers were moved to a newsite rather than given the business end of ashotgun. This time of year sees cubs born underground, wherethey’ll toughen up to emerge in springtime. And whilethey might most be common during the middle of theyear, they’re active all year round. So why not take a strollthrough the country and see if you can spy a badger. Theymight just be your new favourite animal. © Shutterstock / Edward Hasting-Evans 48-49_Layout 1 13/12/2017 12:28 Page 1© Shutterstock / Ondrej Prosicky 48-49_Layout 1 13/12/2017 12:28 Page 2Next >
