This will make itmuch easier for the stylist to visualise whatthey are working towards, and will alsomake it easier for you to see if it works. After all, it’s easy to “assume” a style works, but better perhaps to test it first. With the increased level oftechnology we all have at our finger-tips, it might betempting to let Good old uncle Joe handle thephotography – he’s a dab hand on the iPhone, even putshis pictures on Instagram sometimes – but this is a perilousdecision at best. But children arebeing let down by a government that willtake with one hand whilst simultaneouslydecrying the skills shortage. In order tocreate a skilled, able-bodied and satisfiedworkforce, schools and government needto up their game and take a moreproactive approach. The minutiae of adult life is told in hourlong and frightfully dull PSHCE lessons, where kids typically titter about condomsand roll their eyes when it comes to the“don’t do drugs” spiel. Rather than thisjust being a box-ticking exercise, thecurriculum should instead be built aroundwhat kids need in the here and now andwhat they’ll need for the future. Thismeans learning monetary lessons, such asbudgeting and saving and highlightingmental and physical health. Sex education, in particular, is an areain which students are being systemicallylet down term after term and that needsto change. While right-ring papers latchonto the notion that kids will beMany a teen has bemoanedthe fact they’ve had tostruggle their way throughalgebra despite neverneeding it in real life. Whilethis elusive mathematics isessential for logical thoughtand processes, it issymptomatic of a worseningissue in our schools –namely, kids aren’t beingtaught what they need foradult life. In withthe new62-63_Layout 1 13/12/2017 13:11 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY63EDUCATIONinundated with inappropriate material, experts claim that introducing kids toconcepts about consent, relationships andbody positivity will have an affirmativeeffect. Though appealing to kids usually resultsin a politician claiming to like a popgroup like a “normal person”, it can be assimple as making the school environmentsomewhere students want to spend time.Mixing the old with the new is an idealapproach as providing laptops, tabletsand other new technologies can offerteachers exciting new tools and break outof the usual lesson parameters. Moreexciting still is that disruptive tech such asvirtual reality and the micro:bit caninspire and enable kids who mightotherwise struggle in a traditional schoolsetting. For young people with autism ordyslexia, school can be intimidating andhinder learning. We’re not suggestionremedial classes, as the name alone cancrush confidence, but rather creating apositive and welcoming environment inwhich kids with learning difficulties canconnect with the curriculum in new andexciting ways. Yet modern technology and newmethods can exist alongside thetraditional, with libraries still a wondrousgateway to new worlds and learning. Yet30 per cent of school libraries have beenmade redundant since 2008, somethingthat has prompted a group of 150 UKauthors – including children’s favouritesPhillip Pullman, Neil Gaiman and formerUK Children’s Laureate Chris Riddell – tosign an open letter to EducationSecretary Justine Greening calling for anend to this else she “consign ageneration to a lifetime of lowattainment and mobility”.Diminished funding, tighter budgetsand a mass migration of teachers haveleft the nation’s schools having to double, triple or even quadruple class sizes tomake the most of the resources they dohave. While this may keep the Torieshappy, children are being failed. Thenumber of secondary school children inEngland being taught in classes with 36or more pupils has trebled in the last fiveyears. A teacher can’t possibly attend toand focus on all students, and so manykids are at risk of being forgotten about, with those in genuine need of help failingto be recognised. Smaller class sizescreate a better relationship with teachersand their students, create a more positiveatmosphere, and ensure that no studentgets forgotten about. © Shutterstock / Rawpixel.com© Shutterstock / Monkey Business Images62-63_Layout 1 13/12/2017 13:11 Page 264 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYPETS CORNERWinter can be a rotten month for many people. WhileChristmas and New Year are fantastic, as are the holidays andall the cheer, snow is still snow and there’s no denying thefact that it can be bitterly cold out. We cope in numerousways where we can – and it’s still not unusual for us to comedown with a few bugs in the winter months. Our pets have itmuch worse. Some animals will have it easier than others, especially if they’re an indoor kind like cats, but for outdooranimals such as horses, dogs and such, there are a few thingsone can do in order to make them more comfortable thiswinter.Provide shelterIf your animal is one that spends a lot of time outside, especially if they have to stay outside overnight, then it’salways worth considering what shelter they will have availablein the event of a sudden turn in the weather. In the wintereven a light rain can lead to serious problems as the moistureon fur freezes. Dogs could be brought inside for the wintermonths, or at the very least a sheltered kennel should beprovided – one that is warm and draft-free. For horses, agood field shelter can give them somewhere to escape theweather.Provide more foodIt’s harder to stay warm than it is to keep cool. Likehumans, animals burn calories in order to generate heat, withmore calories needed as the weather gets worse. It might bea good idea to feed your pet more often as a result, and toavoid food that is cold for them. For dogs this could mean giving them a little more foodthan usual, though it will also depend on how active they are.ColdermonthsColder days and nights canbe havoc for us, but evenworse for our pets. Hereare some little tips andtricks to make things easieron our beloved animals. 64-65_Layout 1 13/12/2017 13:04 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY65Keeping an eye on the weight of your pet will be enoughto make sure you don’t overfeed them. Animal clothingAn issue more divisive than politics – should animalswear clothes? Fashion and sensibilities aside, winter wearcan help keep a pet warm. Whether it’s a warm coat for adog or a winter rug for horses outside, it will help protectthem.Horse owners will be used to giving horses rugs and likelyhave many on hand, but for dogs and smaller animals it’sagain worth considering how often they go outside andhow thick their coats are or what breed they come from.Smaller dogs being taken for walks will need a coat muchmore than a thick-coated German Shepherd or a coldclimate dog like a Husky. Watch their healthInfection and illnesses can be worse on animals than it canfor humans, not least of all because we can communicate andtake steps to limit the pain. If your animals start showing signsof illness, lethargy or vomiting then it’s always worth it to visita local vet and have them checked up. Like with ourselves, many problems are easier to deal with if they are caughtsooner.© Shutterstock / AnnyStudioPETS CORNER© Shutterstock / Alena OzerovaFOR A CARING ANDPROFESSIONAL APPROACHTO ALL YOUR VETERINARY NEEDS•Pre-purchase Examinations •Endoscopy•Stables & Theatre •Tendon Scanning•Reproductive Ultrasound •Mobile Xray Unit.Estate Office, Boston RdSPILSBYTel: 01790 752227Heath Road Trad.
