Understand Your Own Aesthetic Needs Like many other people, we want you to feel as good as you possibly can in your body, and as a medical professional I will support you whatever your treatment choice may be. However, it is important to remember that even common and regularly performed aesthetic treatments, like dermal fillers and Botox®, shouldn’t be a decision that you take lightly – so before you rush to your nearest clinic to make good on your resolution to “get Botox®” I recommend that you consider if this is the treatment for you! Many of us have aesthetic concerns that we don’t fully understand and we jump at the first solution that promises to resolve our issue. Here at Flawless Aesthetic Clinic, I truly believe that the first step in any successful treatment is knowledge, and would always recommend that you visit me, or another qualified medical aesthetic professional, for a full assessment and consultation before receiving any treatment. These consultations can allow you to understand your body better, as well as provide you with valuable information so you can make the best decision possible to help assess and resolve your concerns. Unfortunately, when it comes to aesthetics there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach. It is important that you take the time to find the treatments and products that complement you and your body. For example, if you are suffering from sun damage or hyperpigmentation, then you may decide to start with the professional-grade home care products that can be recommended during your consultation. After some time, you can then adjust the treatment depending on your results. If you are happy, great! All that’s left is to ensure you maintain your results. Want more significant results? You might choose to schedule a stint of in clinic treatments to help further resolve the issues. If it’s a diet that’s not been working to lose weight or you’re losing weight but can’t shift a stubborn area on the body, then there are options to discuss and plan together in my well-equipped clinic! Looking forward to seeing you this 2022! No wonder that 95% of all New Year resolutions are health and fitness related, yet only about 19% of people actually manage to keep their resolutions and usher in lasting change. So, what’s the deal? For many, it may be a case of setting the bar too high. If someone’s going from a sedentary lifestyle with an unhealthy diet to eating regular buddha bowls and running marathons from the get-go, the shock to the system means that failure is almost guaranteed. It may also be a case of trying to take on too much at once. Conversely, fitness resolutions fail because people aren’t specific enough. ‘Losing weight’ or ‘getting fit’ are noble aims, but don’t offer a clear pathway to achieving them. In any case, a fitness goal is a must but that goal will differ from person to person. People come in all shapes and sizes, and what’s a healthy happy weight for one person, won’t be the same for another. There’s plenty of folk who are fit and active whilst also sporting extra pounds, while others might be slim but have poor levels of stamina. So, for the sake of argument, increasing stamina will entail regular cardio exercise that gradually increases over time such as cycling and swimming. By breaking down fitness aims into realistic targets, you’re much more likely to reach them and achieve your resolutions. Finding the time can be a big issue when trying to get fit – no easy feat when there’s a dozen different responsibilities vying for your time. Therefore, identifying times in the day that you can exercise will be crucial to maintaining resolutions in the long-term. You may not like it at first, but getting up earlier can provide more time, and there’s nothing like exercising first thing to set you up for the rest of the day. Besides, there’s plenty of studies out there extolling the benefits of getting up early. Of course, that’s not an option for everyone, so looking later in the day, perhaps after work, may be best – just try not to exercise too close to bed, as it can make falling asleep difficult. Perhaps the biggest hurdle to overcome when it comes to fitness resolutions is motivation. Inspired by the season and the whole new year ahead, motivation comes easy. Sadly, it’s fleeting and after a week or two, it can evaporate. The average resolution lasts just over a month before it’s given up on. It may sound trite, but when things become Most New Year’s resolutions fail after the first month but let 2022 be the year that you keep your fitness aims and chart a course to a happier, healthier you. 38 Á first Fitness 36-38.qxp_Layout 1 14/12/2021 17:37 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 37 HEALTH & FITNESS © stock.adobe.com/skumer Get into Running If you are looking to get into running, then give your local independent specialist retailer a try. The mind will often want to give up before the body and we are all guilty of underestimating our physical fortitude and endurance. Motivation is going to be different for everyone, but there are several approaches that you might find beneficial. For some, scheduling and to- do lists can be a powerful way to take charge of the day. As well as being a simple yet effective way to divide up the day, dedicating pre-portioned timeslots to specific duties and responsibilities, it means you can always see what you have coming up. That way, you’ll never be surprised to remember that you’re supposed to be exercising that day. Another great way to stay motivated is to exercise with others. Whether that’s with a partner, friend, or a whole group, anecdotal evidence shows just how effective this approach can be. Suddenly, what might have been seen as a burden becomes something you’ll look forward to. That it’s good for you will be secondary to the socialising aspect. All those times you find your motivation flagging, you’ll have others to inspire and cheer you on. Of all the exercises, the cheapest and most readily available is running and jogging. Truly a democratic exercise, it requires no specific skills, no great expense and can be done just about anywhere. All you need to begin is the will, a good pair of socks, and a half- decent pair of trainers. Other than that, all you need to bear in mind is three simple things: ensure you warm up; stretch before and after; and don’t push yourself too hard. Other than that, there aren’t really any hard and fast rules. You can run solo or with a crowd, in a field, along a river, on the path beside the road. Keep motivated by listening to some music with a fast, reliable beat, or perhaps you’d rather use the time to catch up on a podcast. There’s plenty out there promising to take you from a couch potato lifestyle to running a 10k in a set period, providing encouragement and purpose. The world continues to change at a rapid pace around us, so let this be the New Year that you make good on your resolutions and change your life for the better. © stock.adobe.com/bunditinay 36-38.qxp_Layout 1 14/12/2021 17:38 Page 3ORDER FORM Yes, I would like to subscribe to Lincolnshire Today magazine for the next 12 months, with the first 3 issues only being £1.
