Now I want to address acouple of the reasons why these verythings can hinder your progress, namely stress and malnutrition. We are a society that doesn’t restenough. We eat poor quality foods, have our mobiles by our side 24/7,and perform long cyclical sessions oncardio equipment day in and day out, which research shows causes too muchstress on the body and hinders fat loss.We do not eat regularly through theday, often snacking or missing meals, eat foods that make our bodies tooacidic (such as dairy) and not enoughalkaline foods that counterbalance this(vegetables). We eat far too muchwheat, gluten and dairy and have lostour focus on variety of diet.Western society is becoming moremalnourished, leading to more healthand obesity issues. We do noteat enough protein, vegetablesor healthy fats in our diets. Fatis the first to leave the food listwhen we embark on yetanother diet. Many people skipmeals; only eat a couple oftimes per day or snack ondeficient foods that increasemalnutrition and internalinflammation. Did you know youshould aim to eat every two to fourhours; meaning that you consume fivemeals per day, including protein,veg/salad and a healthy fat portion? From the protein we eat, our bodiesbreak this down into amino acids andthese are the building blocks of life,we need them to build, muscle, skin, and internal tissues. If you do not eatenough your body breaks down itsown tissue for fuel. This leads to lowerlean muscle tissue and a lowermetabolic rate, thus slowing of weightloss. Eating slow-releasingcarbohydrates such as fruit andvegetables provide our body withmany phytonutrients to preventnutrient deficiencies, anti-oxidants toprevent disease, helps blood sugarcontrol, reduces appetite and improvesdigestive health. Here are a few examples of foods thatfit into the slow release group - all saladleaves, spinach, cucumber, bell peppers, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage, spring onion, onions, garlic, courgette, asparagus., blueberries, raspberries and strawberries. Here are six habits you can start todo today to improve your body shape& keep you looking younger forlonger.• Eat regularly every two to fourhours, include protein, carbohydrate &healthy fats each meal. • Drink five pints fluids per day.• Take daily exercise for 30 minutes• Aim to sleep 7 to 8 hours per night.• Do not have your mobile phoneand TV close to your bed. • Enjoy a cheat meal of your choiceonce per week, anything you like.Next time we’ll be talking moreabout the right sort of exercise forbody composition, to shape, tone andbanish fat fast.MartiWhycherleyA healthierway of livingAnother month into the new year and it’s time tohear from our Fat Loss Specialist Marti Whycherley, this time on the effects of stress and malnutrition68-69:Layout 1 20/1/12 15:38 Page 1The point ofrelaxingAcupuncture can help with all sorts ofailments, from neck pain to digestivediscomfort. We visited LincolnUniversity to see what it could do for us.Taking the time tofind out what wasaffecting our willingvolunteer Lisa, the staffat the ComplementaryMedicine Clinic atLincoln University tookinto account her wholelifestyle and past health to bestunderstand what treatmentwould be best. The first sessiontakes an hour and a half, including the consultation andtreatment itself and Lisa’sdiagnosis meant acupunctureneedles being placed in her feet, legs and forehead. Thesetargeted the areas of ‘chi’ thatwould relax her muscles and ease her recurring stomachaches, the ailment identified as most likely to be calmed bythe treatment during consultation.Lisa appeared calm during the treatment, which involvesleaving the needles in for around 25 minutes. She says, “It was really relaxing, I felt very chilled out allthe way through, it didn’t hurt unless I moved my legs whilethe needles were in. I could really feel it working and I thinkI’d be interested in going again.”LINCOLNSHIRETODAY69HEALTH & FITNESSFertilitya little extra helpYou are trying to conceive naturally or undergoing IVF/ICSItreatment and wondering what else you can do. A balancedfive star pre-conception plan would typically involve looking at* Your general health and fitness* Stress levels* Your reproductive health* Optimum nutrition* Your psychological and emotional healthHere are some tips to get you started…* Ask for a thorough reproductive health MOT from yourGP. This will include blood tests for women and a spermsample analysis for gentlemen.* Studies suggest that if both partners take a daily mineral/vitamin supplement (for example pregnacare) this can reducethe time to pregnancy. The female tablet will include therecommended folic acid so there is nothing extra to swallow.* It has been shown that many adults in the UK are deficientin vitamin D and there have been some suggestions that thismay affect fertility. Consider talking to your GP about this.* What are your stress levels on a scale from one to ten? What can you do to reduce this? Do you have a good work-lifebalance? Do you sleep well?* Ladies, you may have impaired circulation to your uterus. There is a simple test to check this. First remove your top andloosen your waistband, then allow your skin to adjust toambient temperature. Place your hand on your chest, thenmove it between your ribcage and navel and finally betweenyour navel and pubic region. Did you notice any significantdifferences in temperature between these areas? If the answeris yes you may find a visit to an acupuncturist helpful torestore balance.A skilled acupuncturist will assess you and provide a plan tohelp ‘tick as many boxes as possible’ with a range of tailoredtreatment approaches including acupuncture, cupping andmoxibustion, as well as lifestyle changes.Complementary Medicine ClinicBridge House, Brayford Pool, Lincoln, LN6 7TSTo book an appointment telephone 01522 886113 Email: clinic@lincoln.ac.uk Web: www.lincoln.ac.uk/shscHerbal Medicine & AcupunctureFREE consultaons for HerbalMedicine with medicines cosng from £6 per week. For Acupuncture the firstappointment is FREE,thereaer it is £15 per sessionor £50 for a block booking of5 appointments.68-69:Layout 1 20/1/12 15:38 Page 2Next >
