Acul-de-sac just past the town’s famousand expansive garden centre, Langtry isactually the sole property on the plot. Butwith other homes already planned in thesame style as the Butlers’ home itpromises to be a paradise. Enter the impressive reception atLangtry and you are immediately takeninto the couple’s sense of style. Breath-taking is the word, with Kay’s professionas an interior designer, it shows in theBeautiful in BriggSelf-build is sometimes the ultimate way to express your idea of charm, sophistication and a chance to stamp your personality on a home. Langtry, home to Kay and John Butler, is one of those places. We pay them a visit.12-15:Layout 1 17/1/14 12:15 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY13HOMESwell thought-out layout, décor andcomfortable style on display. The couple designed the homethemselves, with an emphasis on functionand form obviously at the front of theirminds. The centrepiece to the home iswithout doubt the bespoke woodenstaircase that imposes upon the receptionbut does not intrude. It’s simple, buthighly-crafted turns are carved from onepiece of wood, a testament to John andKay’s insistence to produce somethingspecial. There’s also a wooden dancefloor for parties in the hall, somethingwhich Kay says felt like a natural additionto the house’s design which means eachroom flows into the next. It’s somethingyou can appreciate right away. Thegenerous and modern kitchen, forexample, gives way to a snug with awood-burning stove and boasts viewsacross the Lincolnshire Wolds.Another thing you notice walkingaround Langtry is Kay’s sense of stylewhen it comes to art. Glass is another one ofKay’s loves, with bespoke pieces, somebacklit, supporting the contemporarylook. Many of the pieces are from Houseof Ugly Fish, a specialist fused glass artistThese small touches make the house ahome but, as Kay suggests, the placeremains neutral and could easily beredecorated should the mood take you.Built using reclaimed brick, the homehas five bedrooms, all of which arebedecked with wonderful decoration andsubtle touches to make them unique andinteresting. It’s certainly a place thatcatches the eye. Kay says, “We’ve converted barns andother properties and I got into it throughit being my hobby. I’m now an interiordesigner by profession and we’ve foundthat when you complete one, you areitching to do another.” It’s not just inside that impresses. Tothe rear there are not only views acrossthe surrounding fields but a sculpted andspacious garden too. With a self-wateringgarden, the emphasis is on low12-15:Layout 1 17/1/14 12:16 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRETODAY15HOMESmaintenance, but also on aesthetics. There’s a fantastic water feature createdwith grey and sleek lines that can beenjoyed up close or perhaps from themaster bedroom’s julien balcony. On our visit, the sun set and created afantastic golden light that showed thesurrounding landscape off in rich, hazytones. You can imagine living here is arelaxing and peaceful experience and withthe lack of light pollution, it’s perfect forstargazing. We spot a telescope near thebalcony, so we guess Kay or John are avidfans of the night sky.The house’s plot actually sits on theformer site of Pingley Camp, which was aWorld War Two POW camp built in 1942-1943 to house Italian POWs. It eventuallyhoused Germans from 1944 and became aworking farm until the late eighties beforebeing demolished around 2009. The senseof history is continued as a tribute with thestreet name Pingley Vale. So as well as history, this is a perfectblend of country class and metropolitanbliss in an enviable setting and we think isone of the best examples of a self-build wehave seen in a long time.Langtry is on the market with Lovelle’sBrigg office for £785,000.PHOTO: S.TAYLOR/SBD12-15:Layout 1 17/1/14 12:16 Page 416:Layout 1 17/1/14 11:25 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY17HOMESThose finishingtouchesIt’s that time of the year when everything can seem greyand lifeless.
