< Previous50 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYHEALTH & WELLBEINGThere is an old saying in Texas, “If youcut your own firewood, it’ll warm youtwice.” Though applying effort in orderto achieve an outcome or benefit doesn’talways feel appealing. The regulation of body temperatureand heart rate during the day occurwithout any effort, similarly the visualsystem executes its functions from theretina to objective recognition in thebrain continuously during the wakinghours. Yet some tasks such as mentalarithmetic, rewriting a report for work ordoing homework require the applicationof effort. People haven’t often thought of otherswho accomplish many things in manyfields as having an abundance of energy. How they get this lofty level of energy toperform a myriad of effortful tasks hassometimes been related to physical fitness. Yet only now are scientists catching upwith the real world observations. We nowknow that performing regular physicalexercise leads to an increase in theamount of neurons in your brain, particularly in the areas associated withlearning and memory. Indeed, arecent study showed greater neuraldensity in the memory centre ofthe brain in athletes versus agroup of healthy non-athletes. Importantly, at rest the brain isin a state called the DefaultMode. This consists of a variety ofareas of the brain, involved inmemory and decisions making, knitting together by neural connections. It’s been shown that the more physicallyEnergise yourdefault mode!We now knowthat performing regularphysical exercise leadsto an increase in theamount of neurons inyour brainThe new year is definitely with usnow, January may have seen thestart of a healthy routine but howdo you maintain that all-importantmotivation? James McCarron ourfitness expert and personal trainerat David Lloyd in Lincoln, is hereto help.2 DAYPASSESAVAILABLE50-52:Layout 1 17/1/14 11:55 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY51HEALTH & WELLBEINGactive you are the greater or strongerthese connections are at rest. Simply put, this means you can guide your day today decisions based more on thememory of goals rather than impulsivebehaviour. For example, this increasedconnectivity may help you refrain fromthe ever-tempting chocolate muffin atthe coffee shop, as you have a greatersense or memory of your goal to stayhealthier or lose weight. Now these52 PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/IKONOKLAST FOTOGRAFIEPHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/ZSTOCK50-52:Layout 1 17/1/14 11:55 Page 252 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYHEALTH & WELLBEINGbeneficial effects can occur pretty quickly, I am sure you haveall felt at some stage after a really long hard work-out, “Whyruin it now by having that chocolate muffin?” This is exciting times for scientists in this area of research, butwhy it is important for you to know? If you find yourself in ade-motivated state and feel there is no way out, be safe in theknowledge that simply beginning an exercise programme willnot only change the way you feel but also the way you think.Simply making that decision to start has massive biochemicaland structural implications for your brain. Now there is no magic formula as to what exercises are bestto do to improve the efficiency of your brain and thus yourbehaviour, but emerging research emphasises aerobic overmore resistance based exercise may be of more importance. However, I believe a combination of the two works best. Fromthe basic levels such as taking the stairs rather than the lift, tocycling to work instead of driving, to committing to do 30push ups a day and 20 minutes worth of self-paced steady staterunning four days a week. There is no better time of the year to start, so why not set up2014 to be a successful year?
