If it all had tobe paid for, it would have cost about£10,000, including manpower.“It’s a huge task and volunteers andbusinesses spent a great deal of time outin the rain the day we put it up. The levelof support is fantastic. We talk aboutincreasing volunteering but this goes toshow what a real difference it can maketo the community.”This is one of many projects over thepast few years that have improved thetown thanks to community and businessengagement – many of the streets, shops, and public areas have beensympathetically renewed in recent times. They also help ensure many specialevents take place – such as the plannedthis year for the weekend where CaistorGoes... Medieval on 4th and 5th July –harking back to the era in which thetown first came into being. As well as these events, there iscommunity spirit in Caistor all yearDozens of volunteersfrom across Caistorensured the town’sChristmas tree wasshining brightround, and it’s perhaps most obvious atthe Caistor Arts and Heritage Centre at28 Plough Hill. The Centre has a team ofvolunteers who work in all areas, organising art exhibitions, music andheritage events and generally helping outin front and behind of the scenes. TheCentre also welcomes people from thearea to add value by bringing theirspecific skills. This runs alongside the variousexhibitions and events that are held atthe centre at 28 Plough Hill, plus thepermanent exhibition tracing the historyof the town from 8000BC to the presentday. That runsuntil 31st January, when it will be followed on 1st Februaryby a showing of the work of the pupils of Caistor GrammarSchool, and on 2nd March by the best work from theLincolnshire Montessori School. These exhibitions are a great example of how Caistor’sschools reach the highest standards and pupils andteachers alike make a major contribution to the area. Thesame is also true of the work of Caistor YarboroughAcademy who have created fantastic links between thetown and the rest of the wider world. They were the firststate school in the country to teach the Cambridge iGCSEglobal perspectives course, which over the past few yearshas allowed pupils to make regular contact with studentsin New Zealand, Indonesia and Cyprus – a great way toexpand horizons. It often seems that everyone in the community workstogether. Visitors certainly have a great time too and theMarket Place’s glorious heritage and host of independentretailers and restaurants would certainly make it one ofLincolnshire’s most attractive destinations – even withoutthe numerous special events that take place throughoutthe year. The history and heritage is certainly important toCaistor but businesses and residents alike are eager to lookforward to the future and ensure it remains a vibrantlocation.Volunteers continue toensure Caistorlandmarks like theParish Church are stillwell worth visitingPHOTO COURTESY THE SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF ANCIENT BUILDINGS09-11_Layout 1 23/01/2015 12:03 Page 312 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYREADERS’ HOMESLet therebe lightA spectacular reader’s home in Brigg provides a fabulousatmosphere – with loads of light, style and flexibilityThe Gothic chapel in Brigg isnear Nicol Lodge and theparallels between thearchitecture and thematerials is quite apparent12-17_Layout 1 23/01/2015 12:33 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY13READERS’ HOMESNicol Lodge in Brigg is a hugely strikingbuilding – and it’s testament to thequality of the architecture that it sitsperfectly within its surroundings. What’sperhaps surprising is that much of whatwe see was based on a prior bungalow onthe site. The design of Nicol Lodge is thanks toID Architecture of Grimsby, and as TomWilliams of ID points out, the projectemerged from an unusual situation. “Theowners has appointed an architect andhad a design proposed. It was originally abungalow and the intention was toextend and build another floor, and workwas about to start, but the owners’parents realised that it would result in a14 Á12-17_Layout 1 23/01/2015 12:33 Page 214 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYREADERS’ HOMESrather restricted layout that wouldn’tmake best use of the site. The plannersalso had some issues as it involvedplacing balconies around the house, which the neighbours weren’t happywith.“So they contacted us and we madesome suggestions, like taking it down toground floor level. This presented theopportunity to propose a design thatcould be specifically tailored to theowners’ needs. As well as being more tothe planners’ liking, the other benefit isthat it means it counts as a new-build,so the owners were able to save money12-17_Layout 1 23/01/2015 12:33 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRETODAY15READERS’ HOMESWorth a Closer Look !See, touch, smell and feel the comfortIf you have not yet experienced the best quality, handcrafted furniture in the UK, you should now visit the only niche showroom in the East Midlands dedicated to displaying only finest quality Chesterfield furniturePlease request our essential information packShowroom open7 days a week10.00-5.00pmButSun - Tuesby priorarrangementPlease log on towww.chesterfieldsinlincoln.co.ukOur philosophy is simple…By providing an established, in demand product, of unsurpassed qualityand unequalled value for money, we know that today’s discerningcustomer responds positively to genuine offers. Thesloping side means this is no longer a problem. There’s also plenty of natural light inside the home as well. The main family space is open plan and one fantastic aspect isa set of large sliding corner doors. These link the room to thesouth-facing patio outside – and the result is wonderful, creating a fantastically flexible space that is no doubt a greatplace to entertain and relax. The connection between insideand outside is brilliant. The theme of light and space is alsovery much evident in the elegant family kitchen. At the moment, downstairs also features a large homestudy but one of the main principles of the design was toprovide flexibility, so it would certainly be easy to transformthat into another bedroom if it were required. It’s a home thatcan change with the needs of its occupiers. The fantastic quality of Nicol Lodge and the whole successof the project is testament to the value of using anarchitectural practice such as ID. They can bring a fresh eye toa project and offer a host of hugely valuable suggestions –and Nicol Lodge is a great example of how an original ideacan be totally transformed into something completelydifferent and far more suitable. It’s clear Nicol Lodge is notjust a great piece of architecture, but also a unique, flexiblefamily home – standing out from the crowd yet totally insympathy with its surroundings.12-17_Layout 1 23/01/2015 12:33 Page 618 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYHOMESMinimalism has certainly been a hugetrend over recent years and there’s nodoubt it can look pretty fantastic, as ourprevious pages illustrate. That’s certainlynot the only way to design your home, however, and many find a warm, cosyatmosphere is exactly the kind of thingthey want in their own home. That’s whymany of the key trends for 2015 involvecolour and texture. This doesn’t mean you have to throwcolour around, and indeed thesometimes overwhelming candy coloursthat were fashionable for the last fewyears are a bit more muted at themoment. On trend now is a morecomplex, dusky and rich colour palette, including soft sage and leaf green, mutedpale blue and palma violet. It’s nothingColour your worldA world away from the lurid designs of the seventies, the latesttrends involving colour and patterns offer a cool, classic setting18-19_Layout 1 23/01/2015 11:56 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY19HOMEStoo dazzling but asspring is upon is itreflects the seasonperfectly. Mixing or colour blocking thiscolour palette in one room, or even onone wall, is a great way to create a classicthough contemporary setting. In recent times florals have not alwaysbeen considered the height of fashionwhen it comes to interiors – doubtlesswith memories of the lurid floralwallpaper of the seventies. It’s a bitdifferent these days, however, and onekey trend for 2015 is the influence ofclassic watercolours on interiors. This isn’tjust a question of hanging Sunflowers onyour wall, but instead using hand paintedfloral motifs and abstract designs oncushions, blinds and entire walls. This is something that’s taken onincreased value in recent years as digitalprinting techniques have improved, allowing beautiful and distinctbrushstrokes and impressionistic fashionto appear clearly and effectively on sucha wide choice of surfaces. It could beseen on many of the outfits in the springcollections of our top fashion designerson the catwalks and you can see it onmany of the latest interior ideas. Thequality of printing and the move towardsslightly more abstract patterns means thecolours can now merge in as many waysas you can think of, meaning youroptions can vary from fresh and bright tobold and dramatic. The other bonus of using patternedblinds or curtains is that it’s easy toreplace them when you fancy a change.A more subtle pattern with a traditionalfloral motif can blend in perfectly withsome classic furniture or accessories –and maybe one of two pieces in awarmer shade can give the room that bitof extra depth and variety. No doubt many of us have memoriesof some of the more elaborate floraldesigns of the past but the latest trendsoffer colour and design in a more subtleand muted fashion to add some extrasunshine as we head towards spring.Left: Betta Living’s top design trends for 2015 include the influence ofclassic watercolours on interiorsBelow: www.originalstyle.com’s geometric Victorian Floor Tile range ismade up of individual tile pieces in various colours and shapes.
