On a daythat’s devoted to all things romantic, you’ll probably want to dosomething extra special to make sure you wow your loved one.But then we’re still in the depths of winter so you often have tomake the best out some rather lifeless hair and skin that hasundergone all the stresses and strains of the colder months. It doesn’t have to be like this, though – and you shouldn’t haveto spend hours getting that perfect style. Indeed, as AngelMontague Sayers, UK Creative Ambassador for Cloud Nine, pointsout, “Valentine’s hair should be relaxed, subtle and carefree. Over-styled hair can make you look like you’re trying too hard. Tryusing a large wand for loose undone waves that make you looknaturally flawless, or twist your hair into a scruffy low chignon fora ‘just got out of the shower’ look.“To achieve an undone texture when you’re putting your hairup, use your fingers rather than a brush. The grooves your fingersmake in the hair will soften the overall shape.”Certainly if you’re looking to pile on the romance on Valentine’sDay, flowing, natural hair seems the obvious choice. It’s a style thatharks back to those glamorous film stars of the forties and fiftieswith their cascading carefully-curled coifs – but unlike thosedays you don’t have to pile product on to get the look. Theblow-dry has become a must-have over the last few yearsand, while you can replicate the effect at home, thanks tothe latest hair products that can give you extra volume, but a session with a stylist is particularly popular thanksto the extra pampering and relaxation.Despite the winter chill you can still maximise your shine. An intense moisturising shampoo and conditioner followedby a leave-in conditioner can make all the difference and, ifyou rinse your hair with cold water after every wash, it makesthe hair cuticles lie flat – helping to reflect the light. One style that’s big at the moment that emphasises the mix ofclassic and contemporary is known as Boho Curl. As Steve Hogan,Creative Director for Schwarzkopf Professional Essential Looks, says, “Step back in time with sexy shirtdresses and velvet trousersuits. Don your fur coat, dust off your miniskirt and get inspiredby the seventies!“Handcrafted embroidery and appliqué detailing run throughthis trend, enhancing texture and adding a soft hippy vibe for amodern vintage feel. Hair is a waterfall of large soft curls, stackedin silhouettes and awash with volume. The rounded shapescompliment the Dappling Colour technique, using brown andgold tonal groups to create a natural and dappled end result.Natural, laissez-faire styling is what it’s all about this season, withglamour and femininity being interpreted in an understated, effortless way.”You can also glow and shine even when the sun isn’t out bylooking after your skin. This time of year it’s worth swapping aLooksyou’ll loveCombat the chill and look cool onValentines’ Day42-43_Layout 1 23/01/2015 12:37 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY43HAIR & BEAUTYwater-based moisturiser for an oil-based one, asoil products create a protective barrier whichwill lock in moisture. Oils can penetrate deeperinto the skin so are ideal for giving skin addedhydration. Don’t forget, though, that wintersun can still damage the skin so you’ll stillhave to apply sunscreen still has to be applied.Exfoliation is a common way to make your skinlook clearer and brighter, and while you can dothis at home, you can sometimes overuse them inthe problem areas, end up making the skin over-sensitive, red and shiny. Over-exfoliating can also makethe area thicker and as a result you can end upexfoliating every day – so it’s well worth visiting a saloninstead. The treatment in a salon uses a vacuum action, where crystals tumble across the skin, chip off the deadskin and then are lifted away – giving a real sense of brightnessand rejuvenation. At the salon you’ll also be able to receive microdermabrasionwhich offers instant, visible results. A course of forty minutetreatments will dramatically and visibly improve the textureand appearance of the skin, reducing and smoothing fine linesand producing a smoother more rejuvenated skin. It workswell on acne, especially with oxygen therapy treatments. You’ll doubtless want your natural beauty to shin through onValentines’ Day and with a bit of help from Lincolnshire’sstylists and hair and beauty specialists, you’ll love your look!PHOTOS COURTESY SCHWARZKOPF PROFESSIONAL“Step back in time with sexyshirtdresses and velvet trousersuits. We were lucky to haveColm and Andy, a father and son duoamongst our ranks, and how manyother sports could field such aninclusive line-up?Our team was by no means made upof a crack team of the super-fit, but agroup who have worked hard over thelast year to stand side-by-side withsome of Europe’s finest athletes. It’s amazing to think that none ofthe girls in our team could do a pull-up less than twelve monthsago, and yet have gone head-to-head with sponsored athletes, anOlympic silver medallist tower from London 2012, as well as amixture of CrossFit royalty. The plan for 2015 is to continue to get as many people involvedin competition as possible, and to keep pushing our athletes to bethe best they can be. Most people tend to wind down overChristmas, but we’ve had athletes competing across the countryevery weekend from 13th December, right into the New Year. Sowe’re more than confident that we’ll be hitting the ground runningfrom the word go!Why wecompeteCompetitions can be intimidating prospects for amateurs andprofessionals alike, but as the team explain, it’s a big part of CrossFit.A big part of CrossFit is about competing, whether it’s againstyourself, others, or just against a particular challenge. Everythingthat is done in CrossFit is measured, timed and recorded, whichmeans every time a workout is repeated, you’re competingagainst your previous times, and going further to better yourself. The goal is to stop yourself being a slave to the measuring scales, and to encourage a culture of wanting to better yourself. When you’re competing against yourself and others, thenatural step is to consider actual competitions, a frighteningprospect for many, yet we have been lucky enough to have givenover thirty of our members this year their first taste ofcompetition events all over the country. Some of these have beenbeginner only competitions, while others our members have hadto qualify for first. Whatever the case, we’ve travelled over threethousand miles as a gym alone, and taken a healthy cheeringsection of supporters along with us.Our last year culminated in a trip to Bath for the Strength inDepth finals, a competition between teams of twelve, from thethirty best gyms in Europe. The team of twelve had to be made“When I started I had no interest in competing, Ijust wanted to get fit. But then you realise theyhave comps for all levels, and before you know ityou’re hooked.” – George“In a competition you push yourself somuch harder and achieve much more thanyou believe you can, all thanks to a mixtureof nerves and adrenaline!” – Suzanne“I’ve neverburpee’d so fast inmy life! Someone who isrunning the London Marathon in a few months’ time isgoing to have more of a focus to their training thansomeone who runs for recreation, and their results willusually reflect this.lTo test yourself under pressure and against others.Until you test yourself in a situation where you have tolay everything on the table, it’s hard to know just howmuch you’re capable of. lIt’s fun! Yes, it's scary, nerve wracking and challengingbut it’s actually a lot of fun and unlike anything you’veprobably ever done before. If it wasn’t people wouldn’tkeep going back for more again and again.lImpress your friends and family. Nowthe worst should be over and the weather is a little bit kinder, thiscould well be the time to revive your resolutions. There are certainly plenty of opportunities to do that acrossLincolnshire. The legacy from 2012 continues with many clubsbenefiting from additional funding and increased interest. TheLincoln Rowing Centre is a great example, having seen hugegrowth over the past three years with the launch of its Learn toRow scheme which has seen many people take the opportunity tohead to the water and experience a sport which Team GB excels in.Funding from British Rowing, Sport England, Longdales Trust andothers, alongside help and support from Lincoln City Council, theRoyal Air Force, the University of Lincoln and a band of volunteers, means that the Centre recently opened an extension to itsboathouse and a new building, providing room for more peopleto take part and allow it to offer a wider range of facilities on apar with the equivalent centres across the UK.Other sporting societies across Lincolnshire have also benefitedfrom funding, including the Barclays Spaces for Sports scheme. The bank recently awarded City of Lincoln Council a grant of£25,000 – adding to previous grants totalling £413,694 over thepast decade. The aim is to use the power of sport to help youngpeople develop the confidence and skills they need, and revitalisecommunities. Alongside Community Activation funding from SportEngland, the grant has contributed towards a three year project, offering football and multi-sport engagement sessions at BarclaysSpaces for Sports sites including Boston College, Birchwood,Monks Abbey Park, Welton Manor, Gainsborough and Moorland. It works alongside experts at the Football Foundation, whowork closely with each site to identify their needs and providepractical help, such as advice on marketing and establishing newlocal partnerships. Karl McCartney, MP for Lincoln, says, “Thisspecific funding for Lincoln will make a big difference tocommunity sport in our city. The aim to secure 13,000 plusattendances at these sites over the period of the programme willensure many people around the county will have opportunities tokeep active and improve their fitness.”Other clubs and societies have benefited from funding fromLincolnshire Sport’s Sportivate funding. Over four hundredprojects have received funding since July 2011 allowing clubs andorganisations to offer sports sessions, at little or no cost and in ahost of pursuits, for children and young people across the county. The funding will run until 2017 with opportunities for groups andLet’s get activeThere are loads of opportunities to take part in sport across LincolnshireThroughout the county, businesses are currentlytaking part in theWorkplace ChallengeMonks Abbey Park has benefitedfrom funding from the BarclaysSpaces for Sports scheme46-47_Layout 1 23/01/2015 14:08 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY47HEALTH & WELLBEINGsocieties to apply on a regular basis, and in the next round offunding, which deadlines in May, they’re particularly after thoseinterested in running sessions in disability sport. Throughout thecounty, businesses are currently taking part in the WorkplaceChallenge which sees colleagues and workplaces competingagainst others and battling it out to win points for theirorganisation by taking part in sport and physical activity.Amy Story, Physical Activity Project Officer at Lincolnshire Sport, says, “The East Midlands is still rated one the worst places forobesity related hospital admissions and Lincolnshire has some ofthe poorest health levels in the country. We know the importanceof getting people more active, so we hope workplaces fromacross Lincolnshire join us in our mission to encourage healthylifestyles. Not only does Workplace Challenge help to get peopleactive in the workplace, it creates a great sense of team work andcamaraderie within the office. It’s not just about winning andlosing, it’s about getting everyone more active.”Although it may not be about the winning we’re sure somebusinesses would love the chance to prove their all-round physicalprowess to their competitors, and there are various prizes to bewon, with a trip to Sherwood Forest Center Parcs for thecompany that wins the great honour of being namedLincolnshire’s sportiest workplace.OK, so you may not fancy yourself to finish within the tophundred, but any sporting activity will make you feel good aboutyourself – and there’s a host of opportunities to take part acrossthe county. The Spires and SteeplesChallenge in Metheringham is oneof the many sporting eventswelcoming entrants this year ELSHAM GOLF CLUBSO MUCH MORE THAN A GOLF CLUBSet in stunning tranquil surroundings, be it for membership, lessons or a round of golf.Ideal setting for Weddings, Special Celebrations andnow taking bookings for Christmas lunches & eveningparties, corporate and private. The restaurant and bar are open for anyone wishing toenjoy a fantastic meal in superb surroundings. This really is the perfect place for friends and family to enjoy, relax and catch up. Their Creamy CoteHill Blue scooped a Super Gold accolade and was named one ofthe World’s 62 Best Cheeses at the hotly-contested event, whileCote Hill Linda, which has a rind washed in Tom Wood’s ale, alsoscooped a silver award.Cote Hill Blue was the first cheese produced by the business fromOsgodby, where owners Michael and Mary Davenport have morerecently been joined by their sons Joe. They produce their range ofproducts using the creamy morning milk from their 70-strongFriesian and Red Poll dairy herd. Its latest success follows a double win this summer when CoteHill Lindum won gold and was also named Best New Cheese in theBritish Cheese Awards. Mary says, “At the World Awards, we pittedout blue cheese against about 2700 others from 33 countries, including America, Spain, Switzerland, Mexico, France, Croatia,Austria and Italy, so it was a real thrill to get a Super Goldcertificate. More than 250 expert judges from 26 countriestravelled to the event and they had to pick the winners from thethousands of entries.“Cote Hill Blue is the first cheese we made and launched itcommercially in 2005. There’s still the opportunity to do more, though, andindeed the Greater Lincolnshire LEP, the organisation that aims topromote business across the region, is hoping to double theeconomic value of the food industry to the county by 2030. Thatmeans working with existing food producers to work out howthey can be assisted to move on, and encouraging newproducers to set up in Lincolnshire. To achieve these aims they’ve now set up a Food Board withrepresentatives from the different food sectors in the countygetting together to discuss the issues that are important to them. These can be anything ranging from a lack of new talent in theindustry or changes that could be made to the infrastructure tomake production and transport easier. Even before the Board hasofficially started work, they’ve already made progress in findingout the importance of improved flood defences – somethingwhich many local farmers could tell you is of immense importanceto their livelihood. These food companies range from giant organisations toincredibly small operations who have had a bright idea. At therecent Lincolnshire Food and Gift Fair at the LincolnshireShowground, both were represented, the latter in the shape ofcompanies like The Naked Marshmallow Company, a new businesswhich makes and sells gourmet marshmallows. In one of their firstexhibitions, Joe Colson and Ollie Rendall previewed their stock atthe fair and were overwhelmed with interest, selling out of theirgourmet marshmallows within the first day and baking throughthe night in order to meet demand from visitors the next day. That’s testament to the huge interest in quality food and drinkaround the county – and when you visit one of our top diningestablishments, or take your pick from the unique fare offered atindependent retailers, Lincolnshire is always on the menu.PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/KZENONIn Osgodby, Michael and Mary Davenport produceaward-winning cheese using the creamy morning milkfrom their 70-strong herd of Friesian and R48-49_Layout 1 23/01/2015 12:38 Page 2Next >
