Here we catch up withCatherine Hanley, who writes under the pen name of CB Hanley. Her mystery novelsinclude The Bloody City, which was set in ancient Lincoln. What makes mediaeval Lincoln such afascinating setting?Lincoln has a fantastic medieval heritage, so therearen’t many better places to set a book if you wantto base it in the early thirteenth century. Lincoln wasone of England’s major cities at the time – probablyeven second after London – so it had a largecommunity of people who lived very differently frommost of England’s population in that they lived bytrade rather than by toiling in the fields. When youadd this to the fact that the city was encircled bywalls, it almost makes it like a whole little kingdom inminiature, and I felt that added a really interestingdimension to the storyWhat is the most incredible thing you’vefound out about Lincoln? Many people are surprised when they find out that the castellan of Lincoln Castle, who bravely held out for months during the siege, was a woman. By 1217 Nicola de laHaye was in her sixties and was probably considered a pushover by the French, whocouldn’t have been more wrong. What’s even more remarkable about Nicola is that shehad done it all before – there had also been a siege at Lincoln in 1191, when she hadalso defended the castle without flinching.LincolnshireToday @lincstoday lincolnshiretoday.netStay in touch withLincolnshire TodayWe love to know what you think of Lincolnshire Today – so get in touch withus via Twitter at @lincstoday or search for us on Facebook.
