Though many bemoan theholiday as having become a corporate exercise, underneath theavalanche of champagne, fluffy handcuffs and milk trays is awonderful excuse to get dressed up and enjoy an evening out.And as the first real occasion since Christmas to indulge, you’dbe fool to miss it. A brand new year means a brand new you… or so they say.Though we’re already two months into the year, chances areyou’re still sporting the same old style. Valentine’s is a perfectexcuse to try something different and, if you’ll forgive theexpression, to let your hair down. Most of us have work andother commitments to think about, so it’s no good shaving thesides of your head and sporting pink and green streaks. However, there are a few canny options to mix things up. Wash-in-wash-out dyes are a great choice for experimentingwith colour and seeing what suits before you take the plunge forsomething a little more permanent. But they can also be greatto rock a new look for an evening out. Another option is toners, which can add a more elegant and natural appearance. Colourenriching shampoos are more readily available than they’ve everbeen, meaning you can get a silver sheen to your hair just bywashing it.In terms of style, sometimes the best option is just to sit downwith your hairdresser or stylist and talk things over. If a styledoesn’t suit, they’ll tell you (and that’s more than can be said formost friends and family). By all means bring those picturesyou’d ripped out of a magazine, or found on Facebook as astarting point, but go with an open mind. You can eschew adrastic new cut altogether and just have your hair professionallystyled. Let’s be honest, recreating that salon look at home is aRomantic routine There’s no better excuse than Valentine’s Day to get dolledup, and as Lincolnshire Today explains, there’s plenty ofways to look great this February. tall order. There’s only so much you can do, but having yourhair done on Valentine’s morning takes the stress out of theequation, leaving you free to enjoy your evening. Just be sure tobook in advance. With Instagram awash in bold new styles and how-to videos adime a dozen, getting a great make-up routine at home hasnever been easier. Rather than opting for the obvious red, trypicking from the opposite end of the spectrum. Blacks, bluesand purples can have a huge impact and really contrast withthe staple colours of the holiday. Or you can keep thingssubtler; opting for more muted natural tones and let your hairspeak for itself. © Shutterstock / aumy27feb42-43_Layout 1 24/01/2018 12:44 Page 2HEALTH & FITNESSFitness goals are a funny thing. By settingourselves the challenges of losing weight, eatingbetter or stopping smoking, we feel the need toreward ourselves. Most of us will undoubtedlyhave clocked up a few weeks of a new diet onlyto feel the need to treat ourselves for doing sowell. The popular 5:2 diet hinges on this idea. Butthis is a curious state of affairs, one which willlikely tether an individual to their vice. Imagine ifa drinker practiced the same methodology, rewarding sobriety with a shot of the hard stuff. So why is it that way with food and exercise?Whatever the answer, it’s time to put an end tothat self-destructive behaviour. Consistency is crucial to achieving any long-time fitness goals, as any sporadic approach willonly ever produce middling results and make itharder further down the road. Part of the issuerevolves around setting unrealistic goals.Although New Year is the biggest culprit here, it’shardly alone in people hanging their healthyhopes on. Rather than trying to “get healthy”, it’sbetter to do away with catch-all terms and startsmall.Firstly, identify your fitness and health goals. Itmight be that you diet is exemplary, but yourexercise regime leaves a lot to be desired. Orperhaps you get enough physical activity in, butyour diet is a calorific nightmare. For the former,it’s worth starting with one or two activities aweek and gradually building up. That way, fitnesscan be worked around your other commitments,or can be actively involved in your schedule –such as cycling to and from work. The challengelies in getting over that initial hurdle. Whateverthe activity, often starting is the hardest part andthen the endorphins take care of the rest. Overhauling a problem diet is a harder sell. Thebody acclimates to what it’s given, and while junkfood may bring with it untold lethargy andcumulative health concerns, you’ll simply getused to it. Suddenly feeling bloated and tired isyour new normal. The initial switch to a healthierdiet will take some time for the body to adjust, and perhaps longer still to feel the benefits. But abalanced diet can bring untold results, fromclearer skin and healthier hair, to more regularbowel movements. Laugh if you will, but sciencehas found that the gut has a profound role in ourmental wellbeing. Food is indeed medicine, andeating well is one of the easiest ways of takingcharge of your health. Everyone hopes for an easy option when itcomes to looking and feeling good. No onewants to admit that diet and exercise are yourbest options. But here’s the rub, eating well andstaying active make you feel great. They are theirown rewards, so once you start you won’t beable to stop.Positivereinforcement Feeling the need to reward healthy eating and exerciseare counterproductive and more than likely make itharder to achieve your goals. © Shutterstock / Anna Bogush44-45_Layout 1 24/01/2018 12:46 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY45HEALTH & FITNESS© Shutterstock / siam.pukkato44-45_Layout 1 24/01/2018 12:46 Page 246 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYBRITISH HEART FOUNDATIONPersonalisedServiceProfessionalEyecareNiche Eyewear20 Market Place, Donington PE11 4STTel: 01775 821888www.clarkeyecare.co.ukTHE ST JAMES GRIMSBYA STYLISH TOWN CENTRE HOTELLocated in the heart of the Grimsby, Lincolnshire,The St. James Hotel offers warm, friendly servicecombined with superb rates to offer the best valuein the town centre. It hadbecome the largest independent funder ofresearch into the disease, and regularlyreleases studies and research on thematter.Their vision is for a world where peopledon’t die prematurely from heart disease, and this is a huge problem as there arecurrently seven million people living inthe UK with cardiovascular disease, andthat does not count those undiagnosed –or the doubtless millions further abroad. Itis estimated that over seven millionpeople in the UK live with coronary heartdisease, and to date it is the country’sbiggest single killer. The BHF fund thousands of differentresearch projects around the UK. Theseinclude Three Centres of RegenerativeMedicine, which aim to look at ways ofmending broken hearts – enabling thosewho have suffered heart problems orbeen through surgery to live longer lives, and hopefully to never suffer an increasedrisk of death. 48 ÁBritish HeartFoundationThe British Heart Foundation (BHF) is the nation’s heart charity and the largestindependent funder of cardiovascular research.© Shutterstock / ruigsantosThe BHF fund universities to seek out and train thebest young doctors and scientists, with a long-termview to creating a pool of talent that can continue thework after even the current generation is gone.46-48_Layout 1 25/01/2018 10:39 Page 248 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYBRITISH HEART FOUNDATIONCliff Bradley & SonsFuneral Directors LtdFor a prompt, sympatheticservice from a recognisedfamily businessPrivate Chapel of RestDay and Night ServicePre-paid funeral plans41 Heaton Street,Gainsborough, DN21 2EA(01427) 810619www.cliffbradley.co.ukThey also fund universities to seek out and train thebest young doctors and scientists, with a long-term viewto creating a pool of talent that can continue the workafter even the current generation is gone. The fundingthe BHF receives, whether it’s through investment ordonation, helps to save lives. Many hospitals treat patients based on the researchand discoveries of the foundation. They introducedcoronary care units to hospitals, and also discovered thatclots caused heart attacks – leading to the introduction ofclot-busting drugs and statins, all of which have nowbecome standard treatment. There’s still more to do, however, and the British HeartFoundation are focused on the task ahead. While onaverage, seven in ten people survive a heart attacktoday, that is not enough for the BHF, particularly whenthe heart might be permanently damaged from theirattack. An example of their current research is intoregenerative medicine which can help to repair adamaged heart that has suffered from an attack, all in aneffort to eliminate heart failure – a severe and often fatalcondition that comes about as a result of someonesurviving a heart attack. This is where fund-raising efforts come into play.Fighting heart disease is neither cheap nor easy, which iswhy the Foundation needs the support of individuals, businesses and the public at large. Charity events, business fund-raising, all theway to partnering with the British HeartFoundation itself, there are numerous ways forbusinesses to aid in raising money for such anoble cause.
