While there was no snow over Christmas, the weather has still been frighteningly cold. If last year holds true, we might still be in for snow in February or even March, but I’ll personally hope for warmer weather. But before that we have February, which is a month I like to consider the true start to the year. By now many of us will have thrown away our New Years’ resolutions (or delayed them) and will be settling back into work. Valentines is around the corner, and as commercial an event as it may have become, it’s undeniable that there is love in the air. Our love, of course, is for Lincolnshire and all the things going on here. As such, we’ve compiled a magazine filled with our favourite topics, including a through the keyhole look at a fantastic reader home, a garden with a twist, and an artist exhibiting in Lincolnshire with a bright and vibrant flair. Alongside our regular fashion pages, hair and beauty – health and fitness, and much more. This February issue of Lincolnshire Today is chocked full of inspiration, ideas and fun. Have a great read and a wonderful February! And let’s hope the sun is just around the corner. There are an estimated 8 million dogs in the UK, the ‘Pet Pound’ is an ever-growing market and rural areas can potentially attract a new audience, as more and more holiday makers choose to take their dog away with them. Recent research from the Kennel Club found that four out of five businesses believe that opening their doors to man’s best friend has had a positive impact on their business. Businesses that are ‘Dog Friendly’ are being encouraged to display a window sticker in their shop window to let customers know that their four-legged friends are also welcome inside. Economic Development Officer, Samantha Phillips, said: “Being able to holiday with their hounds is becoming increasingly important to dog owners, so the more businesses can shout about being dog friendly the better.”Grant funding boosts business growth across Greater Lincs Having awarded over 150 grants to eligible businesses, Grants4Growth is impacting Greater Lincolnshire, helping businesses increase production and create quality local jobs. The programme, managed by South Holland District Council as part of the Business Lincolnshire Growth Hub, encourages SMEs to invest in their future, providing grant funding to buy the equipment and machinery they need to expand or diversify. So far over 150 businesses have received a share of the £1.2 million that’s been allocated, investing in a whole range of different assets; from printers to drones. Justin Leckie, the Grants4Growth Programme Manager, said: “We know how frustrating red tape can be and how businesses need to act quickly if they are to capitalise on opportunities. That’s why we meet every two weeks to review grant applications and commit to turn around decisions within 10 days, that’s from first contact through to grant approval.”New grant fund launched for creative artists InvestSK has launched a new funding programme to support creative artists and performers in the South Kesteven region. The funding can be used towards tuition, equipment and travel costs, as well as accessing support such as training, mentoring, workshops with professional artists, observing professionals in rehearsal and performance and a range of other developmental and progression opportunities. The deadline for submissions for the 2018/2019 Creative Artists’ Small Grant Fund is 29th February 2019. Back in November, the council put the call out for creative witty suggestions with Lincolnshire themes. Locals did not disappoint with almost 300 entries received. Needless to say that the team had a hard time whittling them down to the four winners which were: The Spready Arrows; Sir Ice-acc Newton; The Jolly Gritterman and Mar-grit Thatcher. Cllr Clio Perraton-Williams, Executive Support Councillor for Highways, said: “We’ve had some great suggestions and it was really difficult to pick just four. However, the winning entries were particularly creative and original and all had a distinct Lincolnshire connection. “We’d like to thank everyone who took part – I think that we’ve been able to come up with four fantastic names for our gritters!”Multi-million-pound regeneration starts in Cleethorpes Work has begun on the £7.2 million regeneration project to transform Cleethorpes which will see improvements made to town centre streets, public spaces and investment in historic buildings. The first phase, which will include the High Street and the top of Alexandra Road down to Sea Road, is expected to finish in July. Cllr Peter Wheatley, Cabinet member for regeneration, said: “Projects like this take a lot of planning to secure the funding, to engage with residents and businesses to shape the project, and finally to go through the planning stages. The changes to the resort will help to shape Cleethorpes’ future, making sure that the public spaces are fit for the future.” The project was developed by CoastNEL and supported by the Council and ENGIE, with funding secured from the Coastal Communities Fund, Heritage Lottery, Local Transport Plan and North East Lincolnshire Council.£1m park project shortlisted for heritage award The £1 million-plus restoration of Grantham’s Wyndham Park is in the running for a prestigious award. South Kesteven District Council’s Heritage Lottery-funded project to restore the park to its former glory has been shortlisted in the ‘Heritage Project of the Year’ category in the Greater Lincolnshire Construction and Property Awards 2019. The work on the First World War memorial park was carried out on behalf of the council by Robert Woodhead. Thousands attended a Dawn of a New Era event in September that marked completion of the work. SKDC’s Cabinet Member for Retail and Visitor Economy, Cllr Nick Robins, said: “Making the shortlist is recognition of all the hard work by council staff, park volunteers and Robert Woodhead Ltd that resulted in an amazing transformation.” The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony hosted by Homes Under The Hammer star Martin Roberts at in Lincoln on 5 February.Pun-tastic names forrevealed county grittersThe Memorial Archway at Wyndham Park06-08.qxp_Layout 1 23/01/2019 09:11 Page 2The Prince’s Countryside Fund has opened for rural projects across the UK to apply for grant applications of up to £50,000.
