One can find the property, which was built in 1869, behind electric gates and up a grand gravel driveway. Though perfectly private, the property is not too far off the beaten track, offering good road connections. When Jonathan and Peach moved into the home in 1997 it had, as Jonathan said, “the appearance of a derelict property.” The house has therefore undergone careful work in the couple’s hands to make it what it is today. While the couple explained that a decent amount of structural work had been completed by the previous owners, the home was left in a state of decay. Jonathan explained: “When we took over the property there was an awful lot of work that had to be done to the grounds, and the whole house has been redecorated throughout. We have had the house re-roofed and put in new windows - it’s basically been a 20-year restoration project.” He continued: “There are a lot of gothic features to the interior of the property and we kept all those features, even things like fireplaces that had been removed in the 70s, we have sourced them out and replaced them. We also extended the property, so it now has an oak framed summer room at one end of it. It is quite a large structure!” The 41ft summer room is certainly a major stand out feature of the house, blending the modern and traditional aspects of the Victorian gothic revival home wonderfully. It features a vaulted ceiling with exposed oak beams, a flagstone floor, bi-fold doors that open the room out to nature, a glazed gable end and a brick chimney with a log burner. Intriguingly, the roof trusses for the stunning summer room came from an old chapel, which the couple used as a starting point and inspiration for the design of the room. Jonathan said: “When we built the extension, we tried to keep the Victorian gothic feel to the 24 Á22-25.qxp_Layout 1 23/01/2019 09:33 Page 224 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAYHOMEShouse. The planning authority wouldn’t let us simply extend, they said they wanted a contrast to the house, so we created a room that complements and contrasts the property nicely.” The house also boasts 8 bedrooms, two of which have ensuites, a grand entrance hall with original tiled floor, a cosy study with a fireplace, a bright and light sitting room which leads into a dining room, and a kitchen breakfast room with a central island, Clearview log burner, pantry and wine store. Outside of the main house the property also features a self-contained Coach House, a granny annex with an integral double garage. The Coach House has been completely redecorated by Jonathan and Peach and has 5 rooms – a kitchen, bathroom, living room, bedroom and closet – which form an L-shape. The Coach House joins on to what was previously an old barn that was completely rebuilt in 1984 by a previous owner and is now made up of garage and workshop space. In addition, at the back of this space, there is a stable. Upstairs there is also a further workshop that the couple have used as “an office and playroom for the kids.” Mature gardens can also be found at the property, along with established trees and woodland which provide a perfect 22-25.qxp_Layout 1 23/01/2019 09:33 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 25HOMESpiece of privacy. The large array of trees, which include walnut, cedar, beech, copper beech, chestnut and sweet chestnut trees, have quite the history to them. Jonathan said: “The story we were given when we bought the property was that there was a missionary - one of the property’s very first occupiers - who travelled all over, and from every country he visited he brought back a tree.” The couple have chosen to keep the rest of the garden mostly as grassland for ease of upkeep and there are paved areas and courtyards which have been designed to catch the sun as it moves during the day. The garden also attracts wildlife, with for instance Jonathan and Peach seeing deer wander into the garden from time to time. Though the couple love the property and have lived here for over 20 years, they are now selling the home. When asked why, the couple said that they have other properties in the area and their children have now all moved out. Additionally Peach has bought a new project, the Grade II listed Tathwell Hall, which Jonathan describes as “a mind-blowing place, a house with walled English gardens that exudes an air of secrecy.” The Old Rectory is on the market for £899,950 and is being sold by Savills.22-25.qxp_Layout 1 23/01/2019 09:33 Page 4Love your homeLove your gardenLove yourselfLove your family26-27.qxp_Layout 1 23/01/2019 09:35 Page 1Stores in Grantham, Boston & Scunthorpewww.oldrids.co.uk 26-27.qxp_Layout 1 23/01/2019 09:35 Page 228 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAYARTISTIC LINCOLNSHIRE Flowers have a long and storied journey through art history with many of the sharpest minds and deftest hands turning their talents towards floral arrangements. From Van Gough’s iconic ‘Sunflowers’, to the moody, often erotic paintings of Georgia O’Keeffe and even Andy Warhol’s distinctive take with his ‘Flower’ series, the petals and stems of the natural world are as important a fixture on canvas and board as the fruit bowl or Madonna. So to say that Oxford-born floral artist Jennifer Crowshaw is part of a rich tradition A beautiful bouquet This month we look at the two contrasting styles of accomplished floral artist Jennifer Crowshaw and how she’s putting a unique spin on this much-loved subject. 28-29.qxp_Layout 1 23/01/2019 09:36 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 29ARTISTIC LINCOLNSHIRE would be an understatement. Nevertheless, she has carved out her own niche with a vibrant style straddling the tenets of realism and abstraction for a unique vision of the natural world. Jennifer will readily admit to being captivated by flowers and, really, it’s obvious from the detail and dedication seen across her many works. It’s not just the beauty of a summer meadow, or a colourful wedding bouquet either, with Jennifer as much in love with a full bloom as she is the withered and dead seed heads. The entire life cycle is of endless fascination and inspiration, whether in real life or in print and paint. Drawing on a combination of techniques, Jennifer instinctively paints and creates unique ways of capturing the beauty of flowers in their natural environment. Her paintings evoke a sense of calm, peace and tranquillity as if the sound of a spring breeze through grass, or a dew drop on petals. Unlike other artists, however, Jennifer has two very distinct styles which portray her single subject in completely different ways. The first of these styles is closer to realism than not, with still lifes that often THE LITTLE RED GALLERY Love art? Then we’d love to meet you, please call in for a cup of tea and a chat. Here her floral subjects fill up the frame, dominating the landscape, creating a whole world in macro. The vibrant colours of the petals – pink, white and blue – leap from the lush greenery of the background. The second approach is far more impressionistic and stylised. If her other style shows how flowers appear in nature, then this is how they appear to Jennifer. Often on a background on one or two colours, these paintings portray flowers as constructs, as though engineered and not grown. Yet it’s impossible to mistake these as anything other than visions of the natural world, with shapes and colours so vivid one can almost smell their perfume. Set alongside one another, these two styles complement and contrast and demonstrate an artist at the height of her power. When she’s not painting flowers, Jennifer can be found growing them in her Cotswold garden.
