< PreviousThe SUVs to look out for! SUVs make for rugged countryside cars perfect for Lincolnshire’s windy roads. That’s why we’re taking a look at the top five SUVs to keep an eye out for in 2019, compiled by automotive data company HPI’s Mark Bulmer. Mazda CX-370-73.qxp_Layout 1 23/01/2019 10:18 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 71COUNTY MOTORINGMazda CX-3 This smart looking compact SUV is sometimes overlooked when searching through so many different similar models. Mazda has put together a competent SUV that drives well and has a good level of specification. The comfortable driving position allied to a pleasant cabin environment makes it an excellent car to consider. It’s inside that customers will notice the biggest revisions, with an even more comfortable, ergonomic and upmarket interior. Redesigned around the adoption of an electric parking brake, the centre console now flows more elegantly into the dashboard, while the Mazda Multimedia Commander has moved forward for improved usability. Comfort and functionality has also been improved with a padded armrest with console storage box underneath. With the focus on the driver engagement you’d expect from Mazda, the 2018 CX-3’s development also targeted enhanced handling and improved ride comfort. Volkswagen T-ROC Buyers are now starting to see a few more used cars being offered in the market and are being well received by retail customers. The high driving position, fantastic good looks and technical specification push this car close to the top in this corner of the market. It will never be the cheapest car in its class, but it is set to do well. Snappy, sporty dimensions outside, great functionality inside – that’s the T-Roc. The optionally front-wheel or all-wheel drive all-rounder combines the aplomb of an SUV with the agility of a sporty compact model. And it does indeed rock the segment – in varying ways depending on specification and above all colour combination. 72 ÁVolkswagen T-ROC70-73.qxp_Layout 1 23/01/2019 10:19 Page 272 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAYHyundai Kona If it’s something that stands out from the rest, then this car might suit. Hyundai has stepped out of the comfort zone to give this car this standout looks. When it comes to value for money this car will also tick the right boxes. A good selection of petrol, diesel and electric powertrains are available, and all Hyundai models come with a five-year unlimited mileage warranty, highlighting great reliability. The interior is characterised by smooth surfaces on top of the instrument panel that give it a sensuous and refined feel while dark painted parts represent the technological and rugged character. This is complemented by considerable roominess and visibility. Toyota C-HR This car has proved a popular new car, and this has carried on into the used car market with both petrol and petrol hybrid models continuing to sell Hyundai KonaToyota C-HR70-73.qxp_Layout 1 23/01/2019 10:19 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 73COUNTY MOTORINGwell. As you would expect with this well-established brand, this car has been very well put together and pushes advancements in technology. Used values remain strong despite a good selection of used cars in the market and are well worth test driving. Suzuki Jimny What a head turner! This is a small SUV that thinks it’s bigger than it is! The new Jimny follows the heritage of older Suzuki models and is a true off-road, giving you the sure footedness expected of a more expensive off-road vehicle. As you would expect the car is well constructed but cannot match other cars in this list in its class for comfort, especially when carrying rear passengers. Nevertheless, this will make a very popular used car. The Jimny is new into the market, and if you are looking to save some money buying a nearly new car instead of new, you might be disappointed. The first cars back into the market are expected to be close to the new price. But inside is where the new BMW 8 Series really shines. The fit and finish looks and feels luxurious, and you sit low to the ground with the centre console and the iDrive infotainment system towering beside you. Once on the road, the cabin is muted, and the ride is velvety smooth unless a pothole gets in the way. Even then, the car tries its best to cushion the many blows you get from our scarred British road surfaces. All variants get an eight-speed automatic gearbox. This smooth-shifting transmission is coupled to unruffled. There is no body roll, there’s ladles of traction, and the four-wheel-drive arrangement puts down the clout straightforwardly. On the practical side of things, the 8 Series’ boot is considerable, and the rest of the cabin is good for four adults. Ultimately, the BMW 8 Series is a car that manages to seize a hitherto unoccupied niche between being a supercar and a GT. The German machine is fast, comfy and utterly refined. Indeed, in M850i guise, you get gratifying handling blended with suitable practicality. What more could you ask for? COUNTY MOTORINGeither a petrol or diesel powerplant from launch. Sooner or later an even more blistering M8 will join the line-up – probably using the same unit as housed in the M5 – but for now, the series starts off with the 840d: a 3.0-litre dishing out 320ps. The BMW M850i xDrive we were handed the keys to contains a mammoth 530ps 4.4-litre V8. It feels every bit as rapid as the 3.7-second zero to 62mph dash indicates, launching the vehicle onward ferociously. It is complemented by a satisfying growl, with appropriate crackles from the tailpipes when in Sport setting.
