Sitting in Gedney Hill, just two miles from the Lincolnshire/Cambridgeshire border, the owners moved to the area in 2003 and commenced their work on the home in 2009, finishing their project just last year. The family were drawn to the area after living in Sussex, seeking somewhere more rural, with a little bit of land. “At the time we were working in London,” the owners added. “We were used to quite a difficult commute and so we decided to look for somewhere slightly further away that had a more reliable and comfortable train service. Plus we wanted to go to a different part of the world - somewhere with land and a blank canvas so that we could develop the house to our own spec.” The home has been completely refurbished and, by knocking down walls, new spaces have been created. The owners also redid the property’s woodwork and redecorated throughout. Perhaps one of the most notable changes has come with the landscaping of the gardens. “We pretty much started from scratch, but we saw such potential,” they noted. “We had the land drained, seeded, put in an extensive number of trees and we have an orchard now which gives us a good crop of fruit every year.” The owners also created a lake, which their dogs have enjoyed swimming in, and introduced a plethora of fish including goldfish and carp. Lovely to simply look at, and featuring its own little shingle island and foot bridge, the owners note that the lake attracts an abundance of wildlife from ducks to a rather naughty visiting heron. “The garden is quite eye catching, it’s a lot bigger than you would expect,” they said. In the gardens one will additionally find a 16 Á 14-17.qxp_Layout 1 22/01/2020 12:29 Page 216 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HOMES split-level timber decked and shingle area providing various spaces for relaxing outdoors or alfresco entertaining, a hot tub beneath a wooden pagoda and a timber summer house. Stepping into the bright and light house, one is welcomed by a reception hall with Porcelanosa floor tiling which leads through to a semi-open plan living space. To the left of the hallway is a dining room which can easily accommodate large dinner parties, while to the right one will see a formal drawing room with a bespoke sandstone fire surround housing an LPG gas fire, relaxing views over the front gardens and French doors giving access to the stunning outside landscape. The kitchen, which was originally two rooms that have now been knocked into one, placed at the end of the hall represents the house’s centrepiece, and with extensive counters provides plenty of preparation space for those who love to cook. The room is equipped with built in appliances including a range cooker, dishwasher, wine chiller cabinet and pull out bins. A large island sits central in the room featuring an oak work surface and space for stools underneath. The room also hosts an electric fire with a coal effect flame, placed in a period fire surround. The kitchen leads on to the conservatory, providing idyllic views across the parkland gardens. One will find a Stovax wood burning stove atop a granite hearth here, acting as a focal point in the room. Also directly off of the kitchen is the morning room which makes smart use of early morning sunshine - one can just imagine sitting with a cup of coffee at the top of the day there. A useful utility room is placed on the ground floor too, leading to a small conservatory room that PREMIUM MULTI-FUEL STOVES & FIRES ELECTIC & GAS FIRES AND SURROUNDS We have an extensive range of fireplaces, multi-fuel and wood burning stoves along with a magnificent collection of gas fires, electric fires and surrounds on display at our showroom in Boston, Lincolnshire. Travelling up an oak and glazed staircase, four bedrooms are ready to be discovered. The master suite features a balcony, views over the rear garden as well as an en suite bathroom with a large corner bath and a shower. A walk-in wardrobe offers hanging and shelving space and the suite further provides a lounge-cum-dressing area. The three further bedrooms on this floor are spacious, one of which holds an en suite. On the first floor one will also find a family bathroom with a free-standing bathtub and large walk in shower. Proceeding up to the second floor one will discover a further double bedroom, what is currently a home office with built in bookcases, cupboards and shelving, and a three-piece bathroom suite. There is also a games room on the second floor, which bathes in natural light thanks to Velux roof windows. The property hosts plenty of space for parking too, with a large driveway extending past the side of the home, and footings are in place for the erection of a double garage for which planning permission is granted. While the owners have been very happy at the house, enjoying many gatherings with family and friends, they are now moving. They said: “It’s an excellent family home, great for adults and children, and we saw it as our forever home, but circumstances have changed and we are looking for something different, a little bit bigger. We’ve put our heart and soul into the place, but we are ready for the next challenge.” Ryecroft House is on the market for £850,000 with Humberts. The effects of the weather can be doubly felt coming in from the cold into an interior of thin fabrics and cold colours. And so, we eschew the frostier end of the colour spectrum, relegating those blues and greys aside in favour of the warmer hues of orange, red, yellow and umber. It’s less about evoking the summer sun or those long hazy days where daylight reins well into the evening, but rather imbuing your home with a sense of cosy warmth with colours, fabrics, textures and shapes that make you feel comforted and relaxed. The piece de resistance of this ambiance is obviously the fireplace. Whether a wood burner or an open grate, there’s few things as comforting and inviting as a real fire as it works its elemental magic on us. Though they’re not for everyone, there are some especially realistic electric and gas-powered options out there that can offer a similar warmth and aesthetic. For further inspiration, turn towards heavier throws and cushions and festoon your décor with candle holders and bold textural items. Furniture itself can have a transformative effect as deep dark woods will impart a warmer, more welcoming appeal than lighter ones which are stylish, certainly, but can leave an interior feeling overly cold or minimalist.
