< Previous10 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HORNCASTLE EDUCATIONAL TRUST In 2022 the trust has already appointed a new CEO Sandra James following the retirement of Heather Payne and will be welcoming its fifth member, Huttoft Primary School, in the spring. Lincolnshire Today spoke to Sandra and the heads of Banovallum (Grant Edgar), QEGS (Simon Furness) and New York and Frithville (Paul Bargh) to find out more. Why was the trust set up? SJ: Horncastle Educational Trust was formed in 2018 through true collaboration; our four schools, which already had strong bonds, came together to create a great place to learn, develop and work. Although each school is unique, we all have a shared ambition: for every student to flourish, to achieve and to succeed. How does the trust preserve the individuality of each school? GE: We have been able to retain our own policies and procedures where appropriate which helps us to deal with situations in our own particular way. Most importantly each school has been able to maintain its unique ethos and feel. PB: As a small, local trust we understand completely the wonderful and diverse localities in which we teach. While we share and co-develop best practice for the benefit of all our academies, we actively seek to maintain and develop both individual academy identity and characteristics. SF: While we share a common purpose, each school is treated individually, be that through the leadership of its own Local Governing Body or the curriculum on offer to students, with opportunities to celebrate the achievements of each school encouraged, such as those to mark our recent 450th anniversary. What benefits have you seen so far, from being part of the trust? GE: The sense of support and community which helped us navigate the pandemic and the various lockdowns. Once the pandemic is over, this shared vision and values will continue to drive us forward and really benefit the young people in the trust. PB: In the current educational climate, with ever increasing costs, it enables us to benefit from economies of scale, good practice and shared resources. SF: This year has seen the launch of our first professional and leadership development offer for staff across the entire trust. The offer is needs-led and incorporates the needs of individuals, as well as those of each school and the trust, and utilises the wealth of expertise within the trust, supplemented by external partners. How has it benefited staff? GE: It is simply a supportive place to work at the heart of its community. PB: The trust offers an inclusive workplace where differences are respected. Staff are encouraged to continue to develop their skills and careers and we provide development planning, career paths, and internal and external training opportunities together with tasks to help expand skills, Sitting down with the Horncastle Educational Trust Horncastle Educational Trust is a family of four schools: Banovallum School and Queen Elizabeth Grammar School (QEGS) in Horncastle, New York Primary School near Coningsby, and Frithville Primary School near Boston. 10-11.qxp_Layout 1 21/01/2022 14:23 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 11 HORNCASTLE EDUCATIONAL TRUST knowledge and understanding. SF: It is important to us to know, understand and then support the career aspirations of all those who work at the school. Annual conversations are offered for each member of staff as an informal way to understand their goals and the way in which we can support their development further in both the short and longer term. How have pupils benefited from being part of the trust? GE: The students have benefitted from several joint enterprises, including the Saturday morning revision sessions where sixth formers from QEGS help Year 11 students at Banovallum with their GCSE studies which has in the past led to students securing grades significantly above their targets. PB: Being part of a trust allows the two small primary school schools to raise our expectations and aspirations for all our children even higher. We can also offer more extra-curricular activities to develop a range of skills, nurture existing talents and offer a chance to try new things. SF: There have been opportunities to bring students together as part of something larger, such as music and drama performances or through the Poetry by Heart competition. There have also been leadership projects undertaken jointly between schools’ student councils, as well as enabling those students at the primary schools to make use of the specialist facilities at the secondary schools. It looks like being an exciting year for the trust. What are your priorities for the next 12 months? SJ: We are very excited to be welcoming Huttoft this spring. They will add another dimension to our family of schools, being a well-established primary school with a nursery too! Our aspirations for this year include creation of a Children’s Charter, development of our employee journey to ensure we remain an employer of choice and continued investment in facilities which will benefit not only the students in our trust, but the wider communities of which we are proud to be a part. Its owner, Elizabeth, who has lived at the abode for six years, was initially drawn to the home because of the location, which remains one of her favourite aspects of living here today. Elizabeth said: “Being uphill, it is near the cathedral, castle, and holds a prime spot in the historical part of the city. But there is also a great community here, there’s a lot going on, not to mention all the restaurants and pubs, and I really like that you can walk everywhere, whether you’re going into town or down to watch Lincoln City play. It’s in the buzz, and although it’s uphill it’s very central to everything.” The house offers brilliant views with Elizabeth’s bedroom, her most loved room, presenting enchanting cathedral vistas, particularly last thing at night when it is lit up for different events. If taking a tour of the three-storey home, one will step into the entrance hall which hosts a tiled floor, stairs, and is flanked by the dining room and family room. The first of these, the dining room, features solid wood flooring, wooden sash windows with shutters, a feature fireplace, and radiator. The family room meanwhile has a unique tiled floor, a further feature fireplace, under stairs storage, and a wooden glazed sash window. 16 Á Described by its owner as a beautiful sanctuary, this top-notch townhouse is positioned in a sought-after area of Lincoln. The stunning blue kitchen presents fitted wall and base units, a Belfast sink, electric oven, space for a fridge freezer, space and plumbing for a washing machine and dishwasher, radiators, uPVC double glazed windows and door, as well as loft access. A WC sits at the end of this space. Ascending to the first floor, a carpeted landing with dado rail, panelled wall and radiator leads to the living room, a bedroom and bathroom. Elizabeth’s second favourite room in the house, the living room has a solid wood floor, wooden sash oriel windows with shutters, a lovely feature fireplace, fitted cabinets, and cornicing. As Elizabeth notes, the bay window overlooks the Bail, allowing you to see all the comings and goings of life on Bailgate. She added: “It’s really good when there are events on like the Steampunk event in the city. You get a fantastic view of everything that’s happening outside.” The bedroom on this floor meanwhile offers a solid wood floor, uPVC double glazed window, radiator, and storage cupboard. 14-19.qxp_Layout 1 21/01/2022 14:26 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 17 HOMES Moreover, the bathroom holds a charming tiled floor, low level WC, pedestal wash hand basin, roll top bath, uPVC double glazed window, extractor, and half panelled walls. time at the abode, with lino floor, low level WC, vanity wash hand basin, mains shower, heated towel rail, tiled walls, and 18 Á Moving up to the second floor landing - with carpet, storage cupboard, loft access, and dado rail - two more bedrooms await, one of which has an ensuite added by Elizabeth during her Email: info@burtonairconditioningltd.co.uk www.burtonairconditioningltd Air Conditioning & Air Source Heat Pump Services covering the East Midlands and Lincolnshire areas Call now for more information 01529 460044 14-19.qxp_Layout 1 21/01/2022 14:26 Page 418 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HOMES extractor. Outside of the property, at the rear, Elizabeth notes that there is “a nice village-y atmosphere.” “There’s lots of trees and it’s quiet,” she continued. “People just see the street on the Bail, but when you get behind the houses it’s actually very pretty.” With artificial grass, a raised patio and lights, Elizabeth has re-fenced the outside area and modernised it to form a splendid courtyard garden. Though Elizabeth refers to the home as her beautiful sanctuary, she is now selling the property, which is on the market with Mount & Minster for £495,000. When asked why, she said: “To be quite honest I just fancy a change. I lived in a Victorian terraced house in London for 25 years, and I’ve lived in a Victorian terraced house here for six years. I now fancy going for somewhere modern and open plan - a complete and utter change to what I’ve spent the last 30-odd years living in. However I still want to stay in this area, uphill in Lincoln.” • Emergency call out • Free no obligation quote for oil tanks • Gauges supplied and fitted Unit 1, Poplar Business Park, Sellwood Court, Sleaford, NG34 8GJ info@sosfuels.co.uk www.sosfuels.co.uk S.O.S FUELS We sell Heating Oil and Red Diesel Same Day Deliveries 100+ Litres Tanker Deliveries 500+ Litres We Supply and Fully Install Oil Tanks Oil Tanks Removed for Recycling Tel: 07774 012122 or 01529 305891 14-19.qxp_Layout 1 21/01/2022 14:27 Page 5and so to bed... 01652 651828 Princess Street | Brigg | DN20 8HG www.briggbeds.co.uk BRIGG BEDS We are on hand to advise and help you select your perfect bed Great prices online & in-store AS LOCAL AS IT GETS!
