At the end ofthe service, the minister announced there was to be a collection for Wish Upon A Starso I placed my money in the collection box. On exiting the premises, I discovered thatthe funeral director had a donation box for this charity and the money I and othershad donated in good faith had, in fact, been incorrectly placed in the crematoriumcollection box.Other attendees seemed equally confused. Apparently, the hierarchy at thecrematorium insists the funeraldirector does not collectdonations inside the building. Iasked if the money we hadplaced could be retrieved, butthe request was refused. Clearlythis is a ruse to confusemourners and increase thecrematorium funds despite thewishes of the deceased and themourners. Something needs tobe done about this appalingmisappropriation of funds.M PackCleethorpesIf you have something to say that you wish to share with the rest of Lincolnshire Today readers please dropus a line to the usual address. The best of the mailbag will win a case of wine.Lincolnshire Today Magazine, Armstrong House, Armstrong Street, Grimsby, N E Lincs DN31 2QE Email: lincs-today@blmgroup.co.uk HAVE YOUR SAYThe grit paradeDear Lincolnshire Today,It makes such a refreshing change to know what’s actually happening in the countywhen the bad weather hits, so congratulations to Lincolnshire County Council for itsexcellent Gritter Twitter service. Councils have taken a knock over recent years for notinvesting enough in keeping the roads safe during periods or bad weather, but thissimple, easy to understand service was a real help to my family during the recent coldsnap. Here’s hoping we don’t have to use it again until next year!R RobertsNettlehamReaders’LETTERSPickof theMonth14 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYWashed upDear Lincolnshire Today,Homeowners, businesses and residentsof Boston and Skegness can’t have beentoo happy to wake up and find they maystruggle to insure their property due tothe high risk of flooding. According tothe Association of British Insurers, Bostonand Skegness are top of the UK’s risk list, with 7550 homes in danger. We consumers shouldn’t be afraid ofchallenging our insurance companies ifwe believe we’ve been wronglycategorised as being at risk of flooding. Inmy experience, the systems used byinsurers to identify the scale of theproblem can be inconsistent, with someusing highly sophisticated modellingtechniques, and others taking a far lessscientific approach. Let’s do all we can toensure we get value for money.J DowtonBostonSlow on the uptakeDear Lincolnshire Today,Thank you for highlighting the fact that Lincolnshire isstill being ignored by the telecommunications companieswhen it comes to installing superfast broadband. Thisreckless abandonment of our county does nothing todispel the wrongly-held myth that Lincolnshire issomehow cut off from the rest of the UK. Located in the village of Hough on theHill, around seven miles from Grantham, this stunning propertystands in private gardens of approximately 0.6 acres, with anadjoining paddock of one acre. Since 2004, the house has been the subject of a thoroughrestoration programme. The current owners, Ian and Kathy Tylerbought the house that June and carried out extensive renovationsfor two tears. The property was originally an old farmhouse thathad been tenanted for many years and was somewhat neglected. It has now been brought back to its former glory and today itserves as a beautiful family home.It is unclear exactly when the property was built, but a stoneembedded in the south wall of the house shows a date of 1770,when George III was on the throne and England still ownedAmerica. It has the carved letters G x L followed by RH on thenext line and, underneath this, below a carved line, the date1770. It is not known who or why this inscription was added oris here, but it’s certainly an interesting piece of history which hasbeen preserved in the building. With a past spanning well over two hundred years, it’ssurprising to discover that, by some quirk of fate, Eastern Housewas never listed! This allowed for a contemporary renovationusing modern materials - all of which were chosen with greatcare in order to complete a sympathetic restoration, entirely “inkeeping” with the building’s 18th Century architecture. Extensive renovationsLincolnshire Today visited the property recently and met withMr and Mrs Tyler, who kindly showed us around their lovelyfamily home. Ian Tyler tells us: “We were surprised to find that the housewasn’t listed. It is an 18th Century stone built farmhouse, withVictorian features added at a later date.”“We had been looking for some time to find a property torenovate and from the outset; we knew that Eastern House wasjust what we had in mind. It soon became clear that therenovation was going to be extensive. We managed the projectourselves, using a local builder from Grantham, Rob Johnson.During the renovation, we stripped the building back to exposeThe stunning houseon the hillWe take a peek inside Eastern House -a beautifully restored stone built 18thCentury farmhouse....20 18LINCOLNSHIRETODAYHOMES18-22:Layout 1 17/2/12 09:58 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY19HOMESEastern House is an impressivestone built farmhouse in a superbhilltop position.18-22:Layout 1 17/2/12 09:58 Page 2Next >
