Cardio machines have managed toget a great reputation as the piece ofgym equipment guaranteed to banishfat fast and get the body of yourdreams, especially with women. Menhave a tendency to head towards theweights without any encouragement, but this type of training intimidatesmany women. Women often spendhours doing cardio, exercising up to 45minutes to an hour a session on thetreadmill or cross-trainer, avoidingweights altogether. These women rarely see their figurechange shape and achieve the look theydesire or deserve from their hard work. Ihave been one of those women myself, having completed several 10Ks, two halfmarathons and the Tough GuyChallenge, I was often seen poundingthe streets of Lincoln after work. I never looked any different only alittle smaller in size but my shaperemained unchanged. I am not sayingcardio is bad, just that specifically forfat loss and body composition there aremore efficient ways to work out. Thereis something even better, a way oftraining that is far superior in physicalgains, achievement and feel good factor, improves self confidence andmotivation and is even more infectiousthan any treadmill. It is called weighttraining and before you think this isjust for the men, read on.There are hundreds of exercises youcan do, so you never have to do thelong repetitive workouts on the cross-trainer ever again. In fact, I woulddiscourage this completely. Excessive cardio stresses the body andI recommend incorporating shorterinterval sessions in combination to theweights to see the best results. This issomething I learned first hand when Icut my cardio right back to focus purelyon weight training for my own bodycomposition. There is a sixty-year-old client ofmine named Bridget. In the last eightmonths, she has gone from anunhealthy lady who had neverpreviously lifted weights, needed a lotWhat you can do today• Aim for three weight training sessions per week.• Work as many body parts as possible making yourprogram a full body workout.• Work hard, push yourself and get every last rep out ofyour exercise set. A rule of thumb I use is when I amfeeling I can’t do another rep, I make myself push forthree more.• Perform upper and lower body exercises alternatively toburn more calories. This means your heart has to workharder driving blood up to the top and then down to thelower body muscles.• Change your rep range often. One example could be tostart with 15-20 reps for 3 weeks, then drop to 10-12 for3 weeks, then again drop to 8-10 repetitions. After this cycle, increase back up to 15-20reps. Each timeyou drop the repetitions you must increase your weightso the last 2-3 reps are a real effort. If they are not youare not working hard enough. After all, effort meansresults! • Add in interval training twice per week, either at the endof your weights program or on the days in betweenweight sessions. 53-54:Layout 1 16/2/12 14:25 Page 2FARM COUNTRYFARMCOUNTRYLinkLink&&For farmers throughout the region Farming News Safety Equine Machinery Management Outdoor Pursuits Motoring Farming News Safety Equine Machinery Management Outdoor Pursuits Motoring55:Layout 1 17/2/12 10:10 Page 156 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYFARM & COUNTRY LINK - NEWSEnergy Secretary reminded ofland management importanceRural business watchdogthe CLA has welcomed EdDavey to his new role asSecretary of State forEnergy and ClimateChange and is urging himto learn about the rolefarmers and land managerscan play in helping battleclimate change. The CLA says that as Mr Davey’s favourite piece of legislation will be “a lawon energy conservation to tackle climate change” he must also learn torecognise how the land use sector is able to act on climate change. The estate offered an all round farming operation, which resulted in potential bidsboth from locals and for national and international investors. Key to any successfulfarming enterprise is also a good range of farm buildings which, in this case, offered over two thousand tonnes of storage. Stephen Hall of Savills Lincoln says, “The sale of Fenmore Farm underlines the confidence in the arable sector for qualityfarmland both locally and from further afield. Lincolnshire remains the interest of institutional and corporate investors who see thecounty as an area where large blocks of land become available on a relatively frequent basis and aren’t artificially inflated byamenity value or other non-agricultural factors. Key as always to a successful sale is the interest from further afield ensuring that allbid competitively.”Compassion in pig farmingCompassion in World Farming has introduced a new award to its suite ofGood Farm Animal Welfare Awards. The Good Pig Award celebrates companiesthat are using, or committing to using, higher welfare production systems forsows and meat pigs. The award is open to all well-known or notable foodcompanies in Europe. Award winners must have a policy, or a five-year welfarecommitment, for their sows and meat pigs to achieve a full Good Pig Award. In 2011, Compassion awarded eight producers that are making tangible benefitsto pig welfare with a Leadership in Pig Welfare award and more than 248thousand sows and meat pigs are set to benefit each year as a result of these awardwinners’ policies alone. Green energyproducts are taking on increasedimportance and many farm businessesare looking towards replacing theirmachinery to lower their energy bills andcarbon emissions.Innovation is increasingly bringingabout success. The LAMMA showfeatured a special competition for theMost Innovative Farm Invention, whichwas won by Bill Rushton and Matt Smithfor their Tractor Guard. This makes useof transparent guards made from poly-carbonate, similar to material used in riotshields, which can keep flying debrisaway from the windows of tractors. Thisillustrates how a seemingly simplesolution can make a huge difference tothe smooth running of a farm. The Agricultural Engineers Associationreports that vehicle sales look fairlyhealthy. In 2011, 14,094 tractors over50hp were sold, 5.6% up on the figuresfor 2010 and arresting a decline in recentyears. The average size has also increasedover the past decade or so with anaverage hp of 144.3hp now reported –compared to the 121hp in 2001.There may be significant changes tothese figures in 2012, however. Thoseconsidering new machinery purchasesshould be aware of the imminentreduction in the Annual InvestmentAllowance to £25,000, as opposed to thecurrent £100,000. This will be cut inApril and has led many businesses tobring forward the purchase of their newplant and machinery to allow them totake advantage of the larger allowance. There are issues to consider, however, not least because the date of deliveryand the method of payment can make amajor difference. For example, if you pay using a HPagreement it only becomes eligible fortax relief at the date of delivery – and ifthat’s after 5th April it will make use ofthe reduced rate of Annual InvestmentAllowance. Tax relief on furtherpayments will also only become duewhen the asset is actually brought intouse. For those that lose out, the Farmingand Forestry Improvement Scheme thathas now been introduced should be ofvalue for local farmers. Grants of up to£25,000 are available to allow agriculturalbusinesses to invest in improvements inthe use of farm manures and slurries, making use of slurry injectors, GPSequipment and much else. The selectionprocess is competitive but there is £20million available from the scheme. As we report elsewhere in these pages, safety remains a major priority for farmbusinesses. The new breed of machineryemphasises this, and also puts energyand convenience very much on theagenda. The recent LAMMA Show illustrated an increasinglyinnovative sectorCompanies such as NRH Engineering continue to offer a wide range of machineryfor farms of all sizes58:Layout 1 16/2/12 14:26 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY59Visit us at www.nrh-engineering.co.ukCome and see us at The Airfield, Seaton Ross, York YO42 4NFCall us now on 01759 318 775Fax 01759 318 728We are manufacturers of the NRH range of British built agricultural farm machineryWe now also carry out general fabrication and manufacture bespoke machineryWhatever your requirements, call us, we will be happy to help...YOUR CROP ESTABLISHMENT SPECIALISTS FOR MID & NORTH LINCOLNSHIREGraham Brader:Vaderstad Product Specialist Mobile:07500 787019 E-mail:grahambrader@bandbtractors.co.ukHead Office: Windmill House Farm, Forest Road, Mansfield.
