Trusted family can let themselvesin, as can a care-worker, but an intercom can save effort when itcomes to unsolicited or unwanted guests. Bathing can be another difficult task as a person gets older.Getting into and out of a bath can be an inconvenient enoughtask whatever your age, and the matter is only made worse if thefloor is wet or slippy. But for a person with more brittle bonesand slower reflexes, even the act of taking a bath can be fraughtwith risk. This is another aspect however for which there arevarious solutions. With a wide range of mobility baths andshowers available on the market, many of which include a doorwhich opens to allow a person to simply `walk into` their bath, rather than climb in. Changes such as these can be easily made in a home and canoffer a person independence as well as peace of mind. But manypeople shy away from considering these problems, often due topride or a feeling of embarrassment at considering their bodiesgetting weaker. What is important however is to remember thatsuch conditions are natural as a person grows older, and like anyproblem, ignoring it for longer only makes it worse. It might come to pass that as time continues, a person’srequirements might change, particularly when it comes toillnesses or disease, or an elderly individual who either has littlefamily, or that family lives far away. Accepting a carer into thehome, even if it is just a part-time care worker might become anecessity. The types of care available might include help gettingin and out of bed, bathing, preparing meals, taking a person outshopping or simply cleaning the house. These services are often provided by a local council, althoughthey do not come at no cost. Financial help might be availablegiven your circumstances, though that can often depend onyour situation, including what finances you already haveavailable. As such, it’s worth contacting a local council andenquiring further. Many however, look to reduce their costs bydown-sizing their home. Selling their existing property andmoving to a new one that is smaller in size and contains lessrooms. This can not only cut out undesirable elements likestaircases, but also allow the houseto be heated for less cost. While this option can be goodon the financial side of thingshowever, it’s worth doing someresearch into the new location.Does it have good access toshopping centres, how safe is thearea, does it still enable the tenantto continue any hobbies theymight have? Is it closer to yourexisting family? It’s important toremember that one should look tobe happy as well as safe in a newhome, so if golf is your hobby, thenwhy not look for a smaller home near a golf course? It might be however, that a person feels they are unableto live in their home any longer. Be it due to their health, the difficulty or simply the lack of interaction. As such, thenext option is often looking at a retirement home, shelteredaccommodation or a care home. Such a decision might besuggested by others, due to a trip or fall at home, but it’sworth keeping in mind that the final decision shouldultimately be the person making the move. Is there a goodreason for going into full-time care? The only two reasonsone should accept is that there is a risk to your health ofstaying at home, or that you genuinely want to make themove, be it for company, more activities or simply a morerelaxed atmosphere. A person should never feel forced togo into care, as that attitude will simply translate into theexperience not being enjoyable. Thankfully Lincolnshire has a wide variety of care homes, and because of the pleasant countryside surroundings , theyoften have more space and fresh air than many do in otherregions. There are more types of cares homes than many83 ÁSHUTTERSTOCK.COM/MONKEY BUSINESS IMAGES79-83_Layout 1 24/02/2016 14:11 Page 3Call today for a friendly chat with Maria, Jane or Helen01482 896980Drapers Lane, Hedon, East Yorkshire HU12 8FJwww.holdernessgrange.co.uktodayLive forHOLDERNESS GRANGE LIFESTYLE VILLAGE2 bed apartments from only£70,000On Shared Ownershipwith Assisted Living atHolderness GrangeTerms and conditions apply.Holderness Grange is a superb lifestyle village offering first-class Country Club facilities set within wonderful surroundings. As well as the freedom of your own stunning 2-bed apartment, youcan further enhance your independence with our Assisted Livingpackages. Which one is ultimately chosenshould depend on what is needed. As always good mood and happinesscan be as good for a person’s health asmedicine, so giving independencewherever possible is preferred. Care froma care home can be as little aspreparation of meals and someone to talkto on a regular basis, or it can be asintensive as medical treatment andbathing. It’s therefore necessary to visitand inspect a care home before decidingto go with it, and making sure the tenantis happy with what they offer. Many elderly people seek to bolster theinteraction they receive by taking on pets, and the health benefits of a cat or a doghave been well-documented. Being forcedto give up a pet to move into care can bea devastating prospect, so it would bebetter to spend some time looking for acare home which allows pets. It might alsobe worth asking to speak to some otherresidents to get a more unbiased opinionon how they feel. At the very least look tosee if they are acting happy with theirhome. Beyond that, ask about the facilitiesthey have available, what they can offer inthe case of a medical emergency, but alsowhat recreational activities are available forthe guests. And then ask the tenant if theywould be interested in those activities. It’snot much use being impressed by a carehome’s Bowls green if the family memberdoesn’t like the sport. Ultimately, it needs to be kept in mindthat the change is not only going to befor the safety and security of thoseinvolved, but also for their happiness. Andas such they need to be consulted at eachstage to ensure they are simply notagreeing in efforts to not seem a botherto their family. When it comes to thefuture of loved ones however, no onewants to take shortcuts. Indeed it could be arguedthat golf is one of our most inclusive sports – just about everyone, regardless of their ability level, can start hitting golf balls. What’smore, golf can be more than just a hobby to enjoy – as researchsuggests it might even be able to help people live longer lives. If you’re looking to lose weight or tone your figure, it’s been foundthat a round of golf is more efficient than a fast and furious gymsession. On average an 18-hole game of gold could burn around900 calories. And considering the sport is slower paced, it alsomeans you don’t feel as exhausted at the end of it, as you might atthe gym. Obviously the game involves a large amount of walking, and this coupled with the pulling of your bags, swinging andchanges in posture have a strong toning effect on your muscles. It’sno accident that professional golfers all tend to have athletic figures.Because the sport itself is also enjoyable, it is a much easier form offitness to stick to then regular visits to the gym, and will not leaveyou feeling quite so burned out. The health benefits go beyond simple fitness however, for it’s alsobeen found that playing a round of golf a week could reduce yourrisk of heart disease.
