With a myriad number ofgolf clubs and courses, from the north down to the south, theLincolnshire region is mad about golf. With the summermonths here, it’s also a time where many will be bringing outtheir clubs and preparing for day’s out. But why is it that somany people – both young and old – are so keen on thesport? If you’re looking to lose weight or tone your figure, it’sbeen found that a round of golf is more efficient than a fastand furious gym session. On average an 18-hole game of golfcould burn around 900 calories. And considering the sport isslower paced, it also means you don’t feel as exhausted at theend of it, as you might at the gym. Obviously the gameinvolves a large amount of walking, and this coupled with thepulling of your bags, swinging and changes in posture have astrong toning effect on your muscles. It’s no accident thatprofessional golfers all tend to have athletic figures. Becausethe sport itself is also enjoyable, it is a much easier form offitness to stick to then regular visits to the gym, and willnot leave you feeling quite so burned out. The health benefits go beyond simple fitnesshowever, for it’s also been found that playing a round ofgolf a week could reduce your risk of heart disease. Walkingaround a golf course can be as good as running forcardiovascular health, with reductions in blood pressure andcholesterol. Lisa Purcell, from the British Heart Foundation, actually recommended golf as a method to combat heartdisease in their “Heart Matters” campaign, saying; “Walking isone of the best ways to get your dose of healthy activity: 150active minutes a week will help keep your heart healthy andyour muscles strong. Golf can also help improve supplenessand strength, and relax your mind.” Relaxation ties into another health benefit to the sport, thatbeing the stress-reduction it offers. Any form of high intensityexercise can reduce stress, with many people using the gymto power through any negative feelings in an effort to exhaustGolfyourway fitFor those who find frequent trips to thegym less than inspiring, golf mightbecome an attractive alternative. © Shutterstock/OtmarWthe body. But golf’s effects last longer for a number of reasons.Psychological studies into stress and how to treat it haveshown that there are a number of factors that can help reducestress levels, including mild-moderate exercise, the presence ofgreen nature, sunlight, fresh air and social activity. When itcomes to these factors, a round of golf really does tick all theboxes. The added peace and quiet of the course from theotherwise stressful hustle and bustle of normal life can alsohelp people achieve a calmer piece of mind. Golf is also good for our social needs and activity, which tiesin with the mental health benefits of stress reduction. Golf is asocial sport in a way that many other sports do not manage.82 Á81-83_Layout 1 21/02/2018 11:17 Page 182 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYGOLFHOLME HALL GOLF CLUBHolme Lane, Bottesford, Scunthorpe, DN16 3RFTel: 01724 862078 • www.holmehallgolf.co.ukNewcard bookingsystemavailable for nonmembers County CardsThe Lincolnshire Union of Golf Clubsparticipates in the national InterCounty Card scheme, whichentitles members of golf clubsin Lincolnshire to play at over1,200 clubs in England atspecial rates - usually at 50%of the normal green fee.County Cards are availablefree of charge to all membersof Holme Hall who have paidtheir County Affiliation Fee forthe current year.Members who require a CountyCard are asked to enter their name on thesheet in the Professional’s Shop. The club has atradition of producing good players;Tony Jacklin was a member as ayouth and remains an honorarymember.Consider football if you will, that you could attend with somefriends and play together – but the fast paced and competitivenature of the game would prevent you from holding aconversation during it. Not so golf, which will often leave peopleto chat between themselves while they are travelling to the nexthole or between shots. This social interaction is also nurtured by the sport, as thosewho get on well with one another often arrange to playtogether in the future. Agreeing a set time and date that theywill meet again at the club for another round. Beyond that, allclubs have an area for golfers to have some drink and food aftera game – giving new friends a chance to talk about their game,or commiserate if it wasn’t their best. The handicap system inplace in the sport also enables people of different skill levels tocompete against one another if they wish to. Though manypeople just enjoy doing their best and having fun, rather thantallying up who has won at the end. You might recognise a number of the points above as beingexamples of what medical professionals will give you in regardsto helping a person live a longer life. And it’s true that the healthbenefits of golf can prolong your lifespan. In fact a study intothe lifespan of golfers looked at the health and longevity of300,000 golfers and found that the death rate for golfers is anastounding 40% lower than for other people of the same sex,age and socioeconomic level. The benefits of walking can also help ward off conditions suchas dementia, and also slow down the progression of Alzheimer’sdisease. This was supported by Professor Clive Ballard of theAlzheimer’s Society, who pointed out that “By keeping activeyou make sure your brain has a good, strong blood supply, which is essential to help it function better now, and in thefuture. Whether it is going for a jog or walking the golf course, keeping physically active will keep your heart and brain healthy.” Because golf is a sport and hobby that can be accessed at anyage, and continued on right up to the end of a person’s life, it isthe perfect activity to reap all of the above benefits no matterthe individual’s circumstances. Beyond all of this though, there isone final thing to remember. The biggest reason people enjoygolf is because it’s fun! © Shutterstock/Kzenon81-83_Layout 1 21/02/2018 11:17 Page 2LINCOLNSHIRETODAY83GOLFTea Off atSleaford Golf ClubWilloughby Road, Greylees, Sleaford, NG34 8PLTel - 01529 488273 www.sleafordgolfclub.co.ukSleaford Golf ClubJoin Sleaford Golf Club now and getmembership until 31st March 2019 at2017 prices.
