You’ll likely have seen this evolution play out in real time in advertisements featuring women with body hair and men in make-up and spotlighting models with acne, vitiligo or missing limbs. There’s also been so much more visibility for models that are trans, non-binary and plus-size, not to mention a lot more older people in magazines and on catwalks. Against that backdrop, it’s time to explore the beauty trends that will define the rest of the year. The end of 2019 brought with it a boom in coloured eyeshadow, a trend that’s set to continue right through 2020. The idea is to add an audacious pop of colour, the brighter the better – go lime green, sunshine yellow or electric blue, it’s up to you. It’s naturally aligned with another trend that’s been gaining traction – mismatched eyes. Here you’ll want to wear orange over one eye and green over the other. If that’s not your thing, don’t worry as pastel shades are perennial and, like our beloved smoky eyes, never go out of style. As far as the rest of your eye make-up is concerned, it’s all about floating eyeliner which is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of putting your liner around the rim of the eye, close to the lashes, you sweep it across the lid, or have it suspended underneath. It’s a quirky look that’s worth trying out, if only in the bathroom mirror. Thankfully, eyebrows are calming down with the statement over-the-top brow fading. We’re seeing a thinning of the brow in a move away from the big block brows beloved over the last decade. But don’t worry, we’re not about to go back to those awful pencil-thin eyebrows of the early noughties. It’s a similar trend we’re seeing with lips, where trends are moving away from OTT colours for a more subdued, low-key look with an emphasis on natural colours. One of the biggest beauty trends of the last few years has been skincare. There’s been a massive shift in what we’re supposed to be doing when it comes to our regime and the products we should be using. Before, it was all about scrubbing our faces raw. But now our understanding has evolved, and we know that this harsh approach strips skin of the healthy bacteria that gives it much of its lustre. Now there’s a whole host of products purposefully designed to be kinder to these bacteria, promote their growth and even put them back on skin. The word to watch out for here is ‘microbiome’ which, basically, is the fancy name for the microorganisms that live inside and out of your body. You’ve probably heard the word before and you’re not alone – Google searches increased by 110% year-on-year in 2019 and experts reckon that the microbiome will be at the forefront of the beauty industry this year. That’s all well and good, but why should you care? Well, maintaining bacterial harmony on your skin means that it’s better hydrated, lets products penetrate deeper and reflects the light better. Basically, you’ll have the skin you’ve always dreamed of. While there’s plenty of products on shelves already, the most exciting stuff is all yet to come. Watch this space. Arguably the biggest previous skincare trend was contouring, a priming make-up process that offered a perfectly sculpted look. Recently this method has given way to subtler methods and now we’re moving into noncontinuing for an altogether more naturalistic look. Simply put, it’s a subtle highlighting intended to give skin a healthy sheen. If you’ve never tried it before, there’s plenty of easy guides to be found online. In some of last year’s beauty pages, we focussed on the trend for natural – or nude look – for skin. It’s a movement that we’re seeing making its way further up the body with natural hair becoming increasingly popular. It’s all about embracing the beauty you’re born with rather than trying to hide it. So embrace your colour and texture. Own it. You’ll exude confidence and feel great about yourself. That said, there’s no shame in wanting to add some pizzas to your hair. There’s a The beauty you’re born with There’s a lot of reasons to be excited for the year ahead with fabulous trends focussing on natural beauty. The beauty you’re born with 38-39.qxp_Layout 1 24/02/2020 11:19 Page 1© Shutterstock /Oleg Gekman new colouring technique called ‘twilighting’ that’s becoming more and more popular. This has nothing at all to do with a certain vampire franchise, rather it’s a technique for brunettes with warm undertones who still want some dimensions. It’s achieved by painting a few balayage pieces in addition to foiled babylights. As it’s low maintenance colour that will carry from season to season, this will be a big look going forward. Over the last few years, we’ve seen the rise and rise of statement nails, specifically created to garner attention on Instagram. The trouble is it resulted in influencers trying to outdo each other with ever more outrageous nails. Things were thankfully more subdued in recent months and, for 2020, one of the biggest nail trends is animal print – particularly tortoise shell. It’s elegant and classy without going overboard and looks as great on the gram as it does in the workplace. There’ll still be some bling and showing off, but it looks set to be on the ends of nails for something more sophisticated than the outrageous looks we had been seeing. The shift in the beauty industry to greater visibility, body positivity and inclusivity means that there’s no single definition of what beauty means. We’re all of us beauty, in every size, shape and preference. That’s really empowering and means that you’re free to use your hair, make-up and nails to make you feel happy and comfortable in your own skin. Though we’re all about this year’s trends, the important thing to remember is to love your self and own your look. As ever, these are guidelines and the best looks are the ones you forge yourselves. 38-39.qxp_Layout 1 24/02/2020 11:19 Page 2Next >
