< Previous30 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY WOODHALL SPA projection. This on top of being one of the oldest continuously operating picture houses in the country, preserved in its original Art Deco luxury. Live events and concerts are screened alongside new, cult and classic movies, these and a working original Compton Kinestra organ providing thrilling experiences for every kind of film or theatre lover. The Kinema isn’t the only modern venue Weigall had her hand in either. She was also lady of the house at Petwood, an Edwardian stately home in Tudor Revival style, which is now running as the Petwood House hotel. The hotel gardens designed by landscape architect Harold Peto are also open to the public, while the building has an extra historic connection with the RAF. The local 617 Squadron, whom you might recognise as the Dambusters, used the Petwood as an officer’s mess with their comrades. A memorial to the men of 617 stands in Royal Square, free for anyone to visit and pay their respects whenever they make a visit to the village. After the famed Operation Chastise of 1943 celebrated its 80th anniversary with a cross-county Lancaster flyover route, it’s worth watching this space for events yet to come this year. No matter the kind of daytrip you’re looking for, Woodhall Spa invites anyone, whether you want to take life at a slower pace, or make exciting memories with any loved ones lucky enough to come along. A gem for more modern history with ancient murmurs still there to discover, alongside thrilling culture, picnics, peaceful strolls, and shopping alike, this under-sung destination is a place for just about everyone. With so many possibilities there to grab hold of, there’s every reason to visit this year. A tea house through time The Teahouse in the Woods is yet another example of Woodhall Spa’s incredible history. While today the Tea house is a family-run restaurant serving fresh food and family fun in picturesque surroundings, its history is storied indeed. Built in the Edwardian period in 1903, the teahouse was first operated by a pair of ladies, daughters of a London clergyman Dr Williams. The sisters leased the teahouse from the Petwood Estate for £5 a year (worth a lot more back in those times). Edwardian England was at its elegant height during the period, and the Tea House in the Woods was a perfect representation of that, serving dainty teas on delicate violet patterned China. The shop also sold embroidery created by the young ladies. Much of the original architecture and shape remains today, 120 years later, though the tea house has obviously been maintained and modernised since 1903. One thing is for sure, however. The teahouse retains its elegant and beautiful style, welcoming guests and locals alike, and it is certain the Williams sisters would be proud of its continued success.
