The glamourof the fifties and sixties continues to appeal toa new generation who only know of the likesof Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe andAudrey Hepburn from scratchyblack and white films.Today’s stars like PalomaFaith and Imelda May arerenowned for their retrolooks, but you don’t haveto go full-on fifties totake inspiration from thepast. The Fifties quiff isback in a big way, and notjust on women, as from OneDirection to Rihanna, big, bouffanthair is reaching new heights. CareyMulligan and Emma Watson arerenowned for their Hepburn-inspired elfincrops and the beehive remains the(literal) height of glamour on the redcarpet. The catwalks at London Fashion Weekillustrated the huge interest in retro style– hair was chic and overstated and madea distinct nod to the sixties. The beehivesseen at Jean Paul Gaultier made adramatic statement and, even if youdon’t wish to go that far, the positioningof the parting, the flatness of the hair atthe hairline and the explosion of volumeare key to a sensational style. Takethe long, glossy hair in the style of screen siren RitaHayworth, as seen on the right. This is the result ofsimply washing the hair and drying with a hairdryer, putting in rollers all over while still warm. Leave therollers in for ten minutes while the hair cools and brushout the top down to mid-length for volume andsmoothness, leaving curl and movement at the end, using your fingers to enhance. For most of these vintage styles, your hair needs tobe in good condition, particularly when addingvolume, to get the best results. Rollers, a comb andpins are the tools of the trade needed to create mostof the classic looks and Velcro rollers are becomingparticularly popular as they provide support bysticking to the hair. Recent studies haveindicated the brain’s insula cortex mayhelp Mo Farah execute his race plan alittle more efficiently than hiscompetitors. This special region may alsobe assisting Tom Daley to position hisbody so he hits the water with barely asplash. Sometimes referred to by sportsscientists as the “island of Reil”, it mayalso (hopefully) help an English footballernext time they take a penalty in a majorchampionship, by blocking out themounting pressure or the distractingscreams from fans behind the goal. Thegood news is that there is emergingevidence suggesting that this brain areacan be trained using mediationtechniques called mindfulness.Elite athletes possess a hyper-attentiveinsula which generates accuratepredictions of how the body will feelfrom moment to moment .Thatprediction instructs other brain areas toinitiate actions that are best suited to theup-coming exercise. The insula makesthese predictions via sensing the internalstate of the body, a process known asinteroception. Information from all themajor organs of the body is fed back togive an overall picture of the body. Onestudy asked participants to guess theirheart rate; those with greater size andactivation of their insula performedbetter. Hyper-vigilant insulas could allowelite athletes to activate their musclesmore resourcefully to swim faster, runfarther and leap higher than us meremortals! Other studies support this. Men andwomen who have extreme physicalabilities show greater insula activationwhen anticipating a change to theirinternal feeling, whether emotional orphysical. One study looked at howmaking breathing harder via reducedairflow whilst breathing through a tubeaffected performance. Compared tohealthy individuals, elite athletes gotmore answers correct when eitheranticipating or undergoing the breathingrestriction. The elite athletes also showedmore brain activation when anticipatingthe breathing restriction but not whileexperiencing the restriction itself, possiblyhighlighting the fact they could re-organize thinking more efficiently. Another study examined brain activityduring emotional regulation andprediction of emotional responses inNavy SEALS, an elite military fightingforce from the USA. It was found thatwhen compared to ordinary civilians,Navy SEALS showed greater insulaactivation when shifting from anticipatingone emotion to another. In short, theywere more aware of the impendingswitch from positive to negative emotionsor vice versa and engaged brain systemsinvolved in changing their responses. How can we train our own brain’sresponses? Within Buddhist teachings, there is a technique called mindfulness, defined as a quality that involves bringingcomplete attention to the presentexperience on a moment-to-momentbasis. This technique is used by manyelite level athletes, proving a useful toolin enhancing performance. Theapplication of mindfulness practice mayget you under that time barrier you havein your mind for a future event. Many ofmy clients want to go under the hourmark for a 10k run, but the morecompetitive runners may want to gobelow 40 minutes. Whatever the physicalgoal, training your brain to be moreaware of the internal state of your bodymay aid in achieving these goals.
