Ashort beauty regime after your workoutcan pep things up and ensure you look asgood as you feel.Making sure your hair’s still in goodcondition after you’ve been active ispretty simple. After your workout, absorbas much sweat as possible with a towel. You can try to quickly revive your hairwith a hairdryer, but as hot air will makeyou sweat more, don’t forget to use thecool setting to dry your scalp. The county’s hair and beauty specialistswill almost certainly offer dry shampoo, which can be a fantastically usefulproduct when you haven’t got the timeor inclination to wash your hair. Shakethe bottle, part your hair and after aspritz, it will make your hair look freshand grease-free. It also helps tospray some dry shampoo onbefore you work out, as it helpsto absorb the moisture at thescalp before it travels to the rest of yourhair. If you’re going to spend all day in thepool, meanwhile, you should spray yourhair beforehand with a leave-inconditioner because it has thermalbarriers, UV filters and naturally derivedwheat proteins to strengthen and protectthe hair. That should mean the salt waterand chlorine won’t do long-termpermanent damage to your hair.If you’re enjoying a particularly intenseworkout, it’s inevitable that your face, neck and scalp will sweat, and even dryshampoo might not help in this case. There’s an even simpler method to solvethat – hairbands, which will add a chictouch to your hair and cover that flat hairin the front. Hairbands have been seeneverywhere on the red carpet this season,as they look so effortless and can help tocope with the bad hair day in a veryelegant way. After the workout it’s easy just to pullyour hair back into a loose ponytail orbraid. These simple hairstyles are timelessand very on trend right now. To giveyour braid a bit of texture, generouslyspritz some dry shampoo or sea salt sprayon the hair before braiding.Indeed, the sports luxe look is provingparticularly popular this season and hasbeen seen on many of the catwalks. Evenif you’re not planning to work out, thesleek pony is becoming a massivelypopular style, Victoria Beckham’s showfor example favoured a sleek low ponytailwhich allowed the clothes andaccessories to take centre stage. Thisdidn’t mean the hair was plain, though –the key words were classic and elegant. Ifyou think it’s all a bit dull, though, anoversized bow, metal ring or even ahairpiece that differs from your naturalcolour could make all the difference. While post-workout hair can look good, what about your skin? Mineral makeup isproving particularly popular with thosewho like to work out, because it’spossible to exercise in it. That’s thanks tothe pure milled minerals, which meansthere’s no oil to block the pores and nofragrance, but instead make itThere’s no need to sacrifice style when you’re gettingactive this springLook sharpTo give your braid a bit of texture, generously spritz some dryshampoo or sea salt spray on the hair before braiding054-056:Layout 1 14/3/14 13:16 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY55HAIR & BEAUTYFACIAL SPA DAY £89Join us for our Facial Spa Day where you can experiencea 55 minute personalised ESPA Facial and receive a LoveYour Skin Collection* containing five products worth upto £40 to maintain beautiful skin at home.Event Date: 1st - 30th April 2014 9am – 5pmOnly £89 (Worth £179 with gift)*Terms & condions apply. The emphasis is on rejuvenation – andyou should feel brighter both during and after thetreatment. For some, much of the pleasure gained from gettingactive and losing weight can be marred by looseness of theskin after this. One way of coping with this problem, whilelosing weight by exercise and healthy eating, is to make useof a universal contour wrap. When you lose weight, the fatcells empty into the fluid depositing toxins. Removing thetoxins and keeping the skin tight and more compact helpsto prevent loose skin and the loss of collagen and elastin.Getting active is certainly a great way to look good andfeel great – and in Lincolnshire there are plenty of places tohelp you do that. Lincolnshire’s hair and beauty specialistscan also help you avoid any short term pain – in terms ofhow you look – for long term gain.PHOTO COURTESY CRUISE COLLECTION BY TATIANA HAIR EXTENSIONS054-056:Layout 1 14/3/14 13:16 Page 3Our fitness expert JamesMcCarron examines whatseparates a gold medallist from aless successful but equallydedicated athlete. David is a Ph.Dstudent at the University ofLincoln and is a David Lloyd Gymsfitness coach. There is a structure, often overlooked, within the brain that may give winners thatextra edge. Recent studies have indicatedthe brain’s insula cortex may help the likes ofMo Farah execute his race plan a little more efficiently than hiscompetitors. This special region may also be assisting Tom Daley toposition his body so he hits the water with barely a splash. Sometimesreferred to by sports scientists as the “island of Reil”, it may also(hopefully) help an English footballer next time they take a penalty in amajor championship, by blocking out the mounting pressure or thedistracting screams from fans behind the goal. The good news is thatthere is emerging evidence suggesting that this brain area can be trainedusing mediation techniques called mindfulness.Elite athletes possess a hyper-attentive insula which generates accuratepredictions of how the body will feel from moment to moment .Thatprediction instructs other brain areas to initiate actions that are best suitedto the up-coming exercise. The insula makes these predictions via sensingthe internal state of the body, a process known as interoception. Informationfrom all the major organs of the body is fed back to give an overall picture ofthe body. One study asked participants to guess their heart rate; those withgreater size and activation of their insula performed better. Hyper-vigilantinsula’s could allow elite athletes to activate their muscles more resourcefully toswim faster, run farther and leap higher than us mere mortals! Other studies support this. Men and women who have extreme physical abilitiesshow greater insula activation when anticipating a change to their internal feeling,LINCOLNSHIRETODAY57HEALTH & WELLBEING58 PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/U20Pushing yourtraining to theedge!Pushing yourtraining to theedge!057-059:Layout 1 14/3/14 13:20 Page 158 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYHEALTH & WELLBEINGwhether emotional or physical. One studylooked at how making breathing harder viareduced airflow whilst breathing through atube affected performance. Compared tohealthy individuals, elite athletes got moreanswers correct when either anticipating orundergoing the breathing restriction. The eliteathletes also showed more brain activationwhen anticipating the breathing restriction butnot while experiencing the restriction itself, possibly highlighting the fact they could re-organize thinking more efficiently. Another study examined brain activity duringemotional regulation and prediction ofemotional responses in Navy SEALS, an elitemilitary fighting force from the USA. It wasfound that when compared to ordinary civilians,Navy SEALS showed greater insula activationwhen shifting from anticipating one emotion toanother. In short, they were more aware of theimpending switch from positive to negativeemotions or vice versa and engaged brainsystems involved in changing their responses. How can we train our own brain’sresponses? Within Buddhist teachings, there isa technique called mindfulness, defined as aquality that involves bringing completeattention to the present experience on amoment-to-moment basis. This technique isused by many elite level athletes, proving auseful tool in enhancing performance. Theapplication of mindfulness practice may getyou under that time barrier you have in yourmind for a future event. Many of my clientswant to go under the hour mark for a 10k run,but the more competitive runners may want togo below 40 minutes. Whatever the physicalgoal, training your brain to be more aware ofthe internal state of your body may aid inachieving these goals! 2 DAYPASSESAVAILABLE057-059:Layout 1 14/3/14 13:20 Page 2LINCOLNSHIRETODAY59HEALTH & WELLBEINGRelief fromfoot painAngela Riggall of Red Roof Clinic, Lincolnexplains the value of a podiatristFoot pain is something most peopledon’t know where to go to get relief. Some will head to the doctor andothers will just put up with it... butwhy? A podiatrist specialises in allproblems associated with the lowerlimb and foot, in a similar way the dentistspecialises in teeth and the optician the eyes.A common complaint at this time of year is pain in between thelittle toes from wearing pointed boots or tight shoes over thewinter months. This could be due to a ‘soft’ corn. In appearance, itmay be a hard lump or a soft white macerated area. Over the counter treatments, such as corn plaster, contain anacid which, when applied to the area, break down and destroy thetissue so the top layers of skin can be peeled away. This oftenresults in too much skin being destroyed and the possibility of anulcer, or even an infection developing. For those with circulationissues, these treatments are not recommended as they can causemore damage that may cause further issues. On occasions, the cause of the problem, the corn, has not beenremoved. A visit to a podiatrist will identify the cause, and if it is a softcorn, it will be removed painlessly. Devices such as toe spreadersor spacers may also help to prevent it returning.
