The success, and ultimately the longevity, of these businessesit seems come down to the fact that the family business modeltypically has a shorter chain of command, making it quickerand easier to make crucial decisions and providing a sense ofsolidarity that tends to come from family ties. According to the institute for family businesses strongvalues run through family businesses. Owners have theopportunity to teach and pass along their business andpersonal values to the next generation of familymanagers/owners and family members take pride inupholding these family values and build them into their day-to-day work and personal activities”Family businesses embody and embrace responsiblecapitalism, according to the institute by avoiding excessivedebt, having lower staff turnover and taking a long-term andsustainable approach to investment, whenever tough timesarrive, family firms are less likely to go under and are betterplaced to lead the recovery.Another plus is that they don’t have to answer to capriciousshareholders that all too often pressure public companies tomaximise profit, come what may.Instead, they have an opportunity to create a lasting legacythat brings with it a sense of accomplishment, allowingsubsequent generations to become stewards of the familybusiness and carry it to new heights in the name of thefamily. As part of this legacy, they are committed to trainingthe workforce of the future. Key toachieving its aim of becoming one of theleading sustainable ‘Large Scale TourismDestinations’ in the UK, Center Parcs isincreasing awareness of the climatechange agenda to both its employeesand guests. Over the last three decades, the company has proved that it canmanage its impact on the forests. Thishas led to Center Parcs becoming afamily favourite for many looking forsomething more from their getaways, and one that doesn’t cost the Earth. Forme, it meant immersing myself in guilt-free luxury and adventure. For my three day retreat spent at theSherwood Forest resort inNottinghamshire, my husband anddaughters were treated to a bustlingitinerary that encompassed all the resorthad to offer. The evocative forest settingoffered an immediate break from theusual hustle bustle, with the birdsongsetting a relaxing soundtrack to ourescape. With time to get acquainted withour lodge, which was as spacious as itwas welcoming, we took part in TheReally Wild Treasure Hunt. It was ideal forthe 18 months – 5 years age group, andour daughters were every bit asenthralled as we were. We saw variouswild animals, from birds and squirrels, torabbits and foxes from our viewing area. Following the Treasure Hunt, we weretreated to a personal experience with thebaby owls, which is every bit as adorableas it sounds. Being able to hold andstroke the birds made it fun andimmersive for children and adults alike. One of the most freeing aspects of ouritinerary was in the division of activities, meaning that while the kids were busy,my husband and I were free to kick backand relax. Our 4 year old went to thePirate and Princess Adventure (for ages 3– 7 years) which, she said, was one of thehighlights of her holiday. She loved allthe singing and dancing, and we weresafe in the knowledge she was in a safeand secure environment. Our 2 year old, meanwhile, was treated to painting andplay in the Activity Den where she waswell looked after by the experienced andcaring staff. While the kids were busy, my husbandand I attended a pamper session withinAqua Sana’s World of Spa. It was acelebration of healing and respite, withits different relaxation rooms and anopen air pool. Theswimming pool was fabulous, and offeredvarious age appropriate slides and playersoutside of the main pool for children tohave fun in. It was a warm environmentwhich never once felt too busy.Combined with the beautiful setting, itwas utterly blissful. The lodges were beautiful and in tunewith the natural setting, working inharmony with the forest. The proof ofthis is reflected in the variety of wildlifethat came up to the sliding doors of ourlodge. Our children loved feeding thesquirrels, ducks, swans and other critters. The fact that the lodges are all ideallysituated within woodland and pond areasmeant that first thing every morning wewere able to go for a leisurely strollamongst the wildlife. There’s no betterway to start a day. Although a morning walk set us up forthe day, there’s nothing quite like seeingthe site on bike. We hired two bikes anda trailer which was not only a brilliantway to get from one location to another, but also meant being able to take in thegorgeous bike trails. Center Parcs is a fantastic holidayoptions for a young family. There’s plentyto do, and the restaurants we attended(Hucks, Strada & Foresters Inn) all servedup top quality food. There was plenty forthe children to get stuck into while myhusband and I enjoyed a glass of wineand took in the scenery. With itsattention to biodiversity, forestmanagement and use of naturalresources, Center Parcs is absolutely idealfor any looking for a getaway more intune with nature that doesn’t miss out onfun, relaxation or wonderment.
