< Previous50 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYIt’s evident to many that there is anobesity problem within the UK, and ourcounty is no different. Results for the UKand Ireland, released by Public HealthEngland suggest that 62.9% of adults(aged 16 or over) are listed as overweightor obese. While the breakdown betweenmen and women is roughly average, theresults suggest that men are more likelyto classify as overweight, with morewomen being obese. This is no fault ofeither gender, but instead is becauseobesity is measured by BMI values, andmen can carry more weight whilemaintaining a healthier BMI.People who are classed as obese willsuffer from many health risks, not tomention a lower quality of life. These riskscan include a higher chance ofdeveloping type 2 diabetes, being morelikely to develop cancer or a higherchance of gaining high blood pressure –a major risk for stroke and heart disease.Yet again, this can be worse for womanthan it is for men. Official research fromPublic Health England suggests thatwhere obesity in men will make them fivetimes more likely to develop type 2diabetes; the same level of obesity wouldmake a woman thirteen times morelikely! This is obviously a large problem, notonly for the individual, but for the NHSwhich has to deal with the fallout ofsuch. On the flip side, the benefits ofhaving a healthy weight are myriad, andcontain both physiological healthbenefits and mental ones too, includingreduced stress, better moods and moreself-worth. While losing weight is a combination ofdiet and activity, studies show that it isthe latter we have sacrificed in recentyears. Our lifestyles have become moresedentary and that has made getting theexercise we need a difficult task. Gymmemberships are now commonplace, buthave not led to enough of a change tocall the matter closed. Perhaps the mostobvious reason is that while gyms are afantastic way to lose weight, it can beMakinga changeSports and activities arethe best ways to loseweight, yet so often werefuse to consider them.Is it time for thismentality to change? 50-51_Layout 1 20/03/2017 13:28 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY51HEALTH & FITNESSdifficult for people to keep at them whenfaced not only with other people doingbetter than you (who we allsubconsciously compare ourselves to),but also with the lack of mentalstimulation they provide.Running on a treadmill isn’t fun;otherwise losing weight would be asimple task indeed. That is why health and fitness agenciesand organisations are encouragingpeople to pick up a sport in their localarea. Such is the advice from the “ThisGirl Can” campaign, seen on both thetelevision and in local media, whichencourages women both young and oldto be themselves and try out a sport theymight otherwise have not considered. Sports are far more likely to reduce inlong-term weight loss and fitness, notonly because they are competitiveactivities which lends itself to keeping outinterest, but because they are fun, socialand we can see easily identifiable results. Our ability to jog, kick box or play rugbyis something we can measure in theresults we achieve, and it feels good tosee ourselves improving.Because most sports also involve otherpeople, it’s a chance to make newfriends – or just to do something newwith existing friends. This makes thegrind far easier, because instead ofrunning for what feels like six hours on amachine, other people help to distractthe mind and make the process gofaster.True results are also gained when thebody is pushed beyond what it cancomfortably achieve, which is a difficultprospect for most people as every part oftheir body will be urging them to stopand rest. Competitive sport, however, makes it easy to keep going – mostlybecause, deep inside, it’s a human desireto win and be successful. What holds many back frominvestigating sports and activities such asthese is often self-consciousness. It mightbe about weight, but sometimes it’sabout what is perceived as being “tooold” or “too mature” for such things.Sports are for schools and children, or soour minds claim, when the oppositecould not be more true. Sports are playedby people of all ages, and if it takesreleasing the inner child a little to getinto one, then why not?Our inner child is probably a lot fitterthan we are.© Shutterstock / Boris Ryaposov© Shutterstock / Ruslan Guzov50-51_Layout 1 20/03/2017 13:28 Page 252 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYFOOD & DININGHorncastleZ Cake Art Z25 North Street, Horncastle, Lincs. With a top speed of190mph, this aircraft is a much fastanimal, as well as boasting a bigger size, allowing the crew unobstructed 360-degree access to the patient in flight. Italso has greater endurance, meaning itcan fly for longer before needing torefuel. The aircraft will positively impactupon the critical pre-hospital care thatour crew can deliver at the scene of anincident or accident. The new helicopter, which will becomeoperational this spring, will see the needfor two additional co-pilots to join thecrew, which for local pilot Llewis, is achildhood dream come true. Duringhis childhood, he built many radio-controlled aircraft, but it wasn’t until afew years later that he came face to facewith the real thing. At 13-years-old he attendedWaddington Air Show and spoke to thethen Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance PilotGeorge Phillips. It was that chancemeeting that led to Llewis’ first helicopterflight that very afternoon in a Bell 206 JetRanger – an aircraft he would one day goon to pilot himself. On that day, Lewis’childhood dream to become a pilot forthe Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance wasborn.Llewis says: “It wasn’t until I spoke toGeorge during the air show where theLincs & Notts Air Ambulance’s helicopterwas on static display, that I realised aflying career could be an option for me.Chatting with him I was told that theCharity’s pilots were civilian pilots andthat the operation was not part of themilitary as I had thought. I decided thereand then that this was what I wanted todo when I left school.”Upon leaving school, Llewis went on totrain as a commercial helicopter pilot andflight instructor. He then worked as acommercial pilot across England, Scotlandand Europe, which allowed him to gaininvaluable experience in some of theharshest weather conditions he has everhad to fly in. He went on to work as arelief pilot for various HelicopterEmergency Medical Services before takingup a role to Captain the HumbersidePolice Helicopter.59 ÁFor all you motoring needs01472 240 800www.jsmithautorepairs.co.uk54-59_Layout 1 20/03/2017 09:54 Page 458 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYCJM AuctionCentreHappy to support the AirAmbulancewww.cjmasset.com 01724 334411Serenity Memorials LtdSerenityMemorials LtdHelping You Choose A MemorialThat Is A Fitting Tribute To Your Loved One133 Grimsby Road, Cleethorpes,North East Lincolnshire DN35 7DGTel: 01472 269696 Email: enquiries@serenitymemorials.co.ukWe build stables, aviaries, kennels, sheds, workshops, and any other outdoor buildings toyour specification.Tel: 01507 328 820 • Mobile: 07919 883 403Email: steve@tandastables.co.ukwww.tandastables.co.uk4 Pen Street • Boston • Lincs • PE21 6TJTel: 01205 360966 • www.ruthieqslingerie.co.ukWe have a welcoming and friendly atmosphere where youcan shop for lingerie, sleepwear, & swimwear in comfort.
