We’ll hopefully be moving on to warmer weather soon, especially around Easter on the 21st. Lincolnshire is beginning to come to life with events and activities being held outside that don’t require a rain coat and a thermos. One can certainly hope. Whatever the weather, our fine county will be changing as towns and villages gear up towards Easter and the Easter holidays for those with children or other dependents. Activities are the name of the game; getting out and getting active. Our April issue is all about getting out there – with a focus on three different countryside locales this month; Spalding, Louth and Alford. See a touch of modern class mixed with oldy heritage or go shopping at either of these wonderful market towns. Each has so much to offer and manages to straddle the line between modern and historical. Closer to home, our homes features look at a reader’s home with a view, while we investigate the trends of minimalist design in our home trends feature. Our garden specialists provide the heads-up on what needs to be done moving into April, while numerous events across the county (not just for Easter) are highlighted in our what’s on pages. There’s a lot going on in Lincolnshire this April, and we’re happy you can be here to share it with us! Good reading, as always Michael Fisher Editor and the Lincolnshire Today teamThe magazine that cares WE CARE because we want to leave our world a better place than we found it Lincolnshire Today believes that being socially and environmentally responsible is the key to maintaining a flourishing business that our customers will be pleased to use and our staff will be proud to be part of. Council Leader Rob Waltham said: “It is so important that we remember atrocities of the Second World War. This new memorial will help North Lincolnshire honour the millions of victims, including Jews, members of the LGBT community, disabled people, and other nationality and groups that the Nazis wrongly considered inferior. “A prominent memorial in Scunthorpe will support our communities to come together to understand the persecution these victims faced and vow to never repeat it.” The new memorial will be North Lincolnshire’s second to commemorate the atrocities of the Holocaust, after a memorial was unveiled in Peace Park in Brigg earlier this year. Brigg’s Holocaust memorial was designed by a student from Sir John Nelthorpe School and funded by Brigg Town Council and local businesses.© Shuttertock.com/Electric Egglatest newsStamford Community Orchard Group Jean-Christophe Novelli 06-08.qxp_Layout 1 18/03/2019 14:20 Page 1A new fundraising partnership with Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance will see textile recycling organisation BIU Group provide clothing banks in the car parks of supermarkets, health and leisure centres, pubs, shops and local authority waste recycling centres across the region. The banks will allow the public to donate unwanted clothes, shoes and household textiles, which in turn will raise funds for the service. There are currently only around 25 donation banks across the region and many more are needed. A spokesperson for the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance said: “The partnership with BIU Group will help us to continue to provide our patients with the very best critical pre-hospital care possible.” Wendy Yarney, Charity Partnerships Director for BIU Group, added: “By hosting one of our recycling banks, you are helping to keep the air ambulance flying 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.” National tech start-up award for Lincoln company A Lincoln start-up that creates intelligent wearable technology has won a national competition aimed at finding the UK’s most innovative and exciting new tech companies. Tended were whittled down from hundreds of applications to one of 33 semi-finalists in Tech Nation’s Rising Star awards in January. At the grand final in London in March, Tended pitched their business in front of a high-profile panel of expert judges, including the Head of Startups at Microsoft, and were selected as one of ten winners. The competition final marked the culmination of a nationwide search to find up-and-coming tech start-ups with the potential to scale their businesses and ultimately become the market leaders of tomorrow. The winners receive a package of support that includes one-to-one mentoring and introductions to potential partners and investors. Leo Scott-Smith, Tended’s founder and CEO, said: “It was great to be named as a Tech Nation Rising Star and for our team and product to get the recognition we believe they deserve.”Prehistoric sea monster on display in Scunthorpe In the summer of 2018, parts of a fossilised Pliosaur skeleton were found buried in land operated by building materials supplier CEMEX. The remains of this savage predator will now be going on display at North Lincolnshire Museum in Scunthorpe. According to experts, Pliosaurs dominated the seas for around 75 million years, had an enormously powerful bite, complex system of sensory organs in their snouts, great eyesight and the ability to taste water as they swam to locate prey. Various parts of this creature have been found among clay and limestone including 29 vertebrae, a tooth, 14 ribs, humerus and some of the small bones that were at the tip of the upper jaw, premaxilla. Many of these pieces are being cleaned and preserved for display. The remains will form part of a temporary display in North Lincolnshire Museum in Scunthorpe from the end of February, prior to a permanent exhibition being installed later in the year. David was a beloved figure at the independent store and leaves behind a long and treasured service to customers. He was also a pillar of the community, with Eve and Ranshaw sponsoring many a show at Louth Playgoers. The store also helped to raise thousands of pounds for charity with its annual fashion show. David has been a past president of Louth Rotary Club and a president of the town’s Chamber of Business and Commerce. He even appeared on the Channel 4 show The Takeover four years ago alongside Hilary Devey from Dragon’s Den. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all his loyal staff at Eve & Ranshaw. Appleby-based animal charity, Andrew’s Hedgehog Hospital, has raised £1,000 thanks to players of Lincs Lotto. Since launching in September 2017, Lincs Lotto players have raised over £80,000 for good causes across North Lincolnshire. Sixty pence from each £1 Lincs Lotto ticket sold goes to supporting good causes across North Lincolnshire. Andrew’s Hedgehog Hospital has been signed up as a Lincs Lotto good cause since the launch and has raised £1,000 through the community lottery. Frank Tett from Andrew’s Hedgehog Hospital said: “Any money raised through Andrew’s Hedgehog Hospital is a bonus. We are thrilled to bits with the £1,000 that has been raised – it will go towards ensuring our hedgehogs are well fed and looked after. “A hedgehog costs 50p to feed a day so this money will allow us to feed a hedgehog for 2,000 days. This is fantastic and we would like to say a huge thank you to our sponsors.”latest newsHedgehog charity raises funds through Lincs Lotto© Sarah Batey/Eve & RanshawLOCAL COMPUTER MAC EXPERT * MAC & Laptop Repairs * Virus / Spyware Fixed * Windows 7 / 10, Upgrades * Wireless Internet, Security * Data Recovery, Outlook, Email * Hardware Upgrades, Custom PCs * Website Design, Software Support Fixed onsite same day Microsoft Certified Engineers Immediate call out 07758 450396© Shutterstock/supakrit tirayasupasin06-08.qxp_Layout 1 18/03/2019 14:20 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 9SPALDINGSpalding is a quaint market town on the River Welland in South Holland and most of its early fame came from the well-known annual Spalding Flower Parade, which was held from 1959 to 2013. At one time this event could attract up to 100,000 visitors, but things are a little quieter now, giving the town a peaceful, serene air. Visiting Spalding 11 ÁSpalding manages to keep the best of both worlds, remaining a quaint and traditional countryside locale while also boasting its fair share of modern amenities. That’s not to say Spalding is boring or lacking in life, for that couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s a vibrant and bustling town with a busy town centre filled with independent shops and stores. It holds its markets every Tuesday and Saturday, and much like in times of old these prove to be popular 09-13.qxp_Layout 1 18/03/2019 14:23 Page 1Next >
