This is our third Tour de Yorkshire in 5 years and we’re hugely proud of our cycling links now. We’re also working with White Rose Yorkshire Steampunks to host the third Steampunk Decadence event on May 25 and 26th in the Market Square and Wool Market area. This is Becoming something of a annual celebration now and we love hosting the travelling Steampunk enthusiasts, certainly a great spectacle. Doncaster is one of the oldest towns in England with a fascinating history. Can you tell our reader’s more? The Romans first settled here in around the late AD40s, and in AD71 founded a fort at Danum, which is present day Doncaster. The main Roman road northwards came through the town and this has played an important role in the development of Doncaster through the centuries. The Roman road became the Great North Road, now the A1 of course. In the days of the stagecoach, many inns flourished and naturally required stabling for horses. Many of these coaching inns survive – such as the Salutation Inn or The Crown Hotel in Bawtry. Unsurprisingly horseracing developed as early as the 16th century and the oldest regulated horse race in the world – the Doncaster Gold Cup – was first run in 1766. Just ten years later the St Leger Q&A We caught up with Visit Doncaster to talk about the town’s market renaissance, its must-attend events, the Tour de Yorkshire and ‘Tish’, the oldest pet goldfish ever. 94-95.qxp_Layout 1 18/03/2019 15:10 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 95VISIT DONCASTER - Q&AStakes was run at Doncaster Racecourse for the first time and it remains the oldest classic race in the world. The Normans built fine castles and two survive in Doncaster, at Conisbrough and Tickhill. Many fine buildings were built in the Georgian and Regency era – including the Mansion House, which was opened in 1749 and is one of only three Mansion Houses in England. Also, a fact I bet you didn’t know – Doncaster was home to the world’s oldest goldfish. Called ‘Tish’, the goldfish died peacefully in his bowl, forty-three years after he was won as a prize at a funfair. Tish achieved fame late in life after being recognised by the Guinness Book of Records only last year. There’s been some big changes at Doncaster Market due to the revamp at the Wool Market. What can we expect to find there? You’re right, there’s been some big changes taking place thanks to a complete revamp of the Wool Market by Doncaster Council. The new design, which opens in March, will transform the markets area into a vibrant location opening extra days into the evenings and with more events. It will be home to great street food, shopping and entertainment. We’re so looking forward to the opening and have a great line up of events planned from the opening day of the 26th through to the weekend of the 29th to the 31st where we’re hoping to create a huge buzz around the town. There’s a range of entertainment, pop-up escape room, circus workshops, live music and so much more. This is definitely not one to miss and the full line up for the opening weekend is available on the visit Doncaster website or events listings on Facebook. The Tour de Yorkshire is now in its fifth year of celebrations. What else can locals and visitors get involved with? To date we’ve hosted finishes for the TDY, this year is different and we have a start. It’s going to be something extra special as we see the day one start and the teams all mass in the Market area and start the racing right here in Doncaster. The cyclists will do a circuit of the town centre streets, and we hope to see huge crowds lining the route, before the cyclists head out of town through Bentley on the A19. We’re hoping the businesses get on board this year too with the race being town centre based and we’ve loads of decorations planned and a competition for the best dressed window… so much really its hard to fit it all in to one day! Doncaster has a vibrant centre with many events on, but what about more rural areas? Sometimes it can be easy to forget that there’s so much countryside and green space surrounding Doncaster. The town is the largest metropolitan borough in the country yet remains essentially rural. So whether you’re seriously into bird watching, or just fancy a breath of fresh air in beautiful scenery, there is something for everyone in Doncaster’s landscape. We also have a number of major attractions on our doorstep that attract huge numbers of visitors – the likes of Cusworth Hall and Brodsworth Hall, Conisbrough Castle or of course the Yorkshire Wildlife Park to name but a few – Doncaster has so much going on! If you want to see an up to date what’s on, then you’ll need to head to Visit Doncaster website where we try to keep up to date with all the events. Something seemed to be going well, then came a bombshell out of the blue to disrupt everything again. After this rather unpredictable phase you can now look forward some very pleasant surprises indeed that will make you feel that at long last you are getting something right. Taurus Apr 21 - May 21 Sort out your budget and if you feel that you are in a strong enough position, splash out on a project or home improvement idea that will benefit both you and your family. If you are in one of your sociable moods and want to put on a spread for loved ones and friends, now is the perfect time to invite people over and let your hair down. Gemini May 22 - June 21 You may feel somewhat snubbed by someone who has not been returning your calls or text messages. Sudden changes at work could throw you off course and send you reeling in a different direction. You may even decide to look for a new job as a result. Book a much overdue holiday and take time out. Cancer Jun 22 - Jul 23 You will be given some breathing space to sort out your priorities. What you wanted in your life in the past you are no longer interested in. By now you confidently know just who your true friends are and where your loyalties lie. Leo Jul 24 - Aug 23 You are now starting to achieve what once seemed impossible. If you have been on a weight loss plan or starting to do more exercise because you want to both look and feel a million dollars, you are most definitely on the right track, so much so, that you are attracting a whole load of attention from all kinds of interested parties. Virgo Aug 24 - Sep 23 There is something of a honeymoon atmosphere surrounding you and your loved one. Even if you have been at logger heads with one another previously, it looks as though you are both calling a truce and now starting to talk calmly rather than raving and screaming. A job offer may soon come along that promises a better future financially. Libra Sep 24 - Oct 23 Take your time in dealing with any financial negotiations. A friend may think it’s ok to ask penetrative questions about your personal life. You may have to put them in their place. The last thing you need right now is for gossip to circulate that isn’t strictly accurate. Scorpio Oct 24 - Nov 22 Others are noticing that you appear much happier and calmer than you have in the past. One of the main reasons is because you are not allowing anything or anyone that is negative into your arena. You do right in making your own decisions and following your gut instincts. Sagittarius Nov 23 - Dec 21 Never being one to suffer fools, it looks as though you are going to put one or two people smack bang in their place. Someone may cheekily ask you some very personal questions relating to your finances. Well, you won’t like that one bit, will you? None of their business. Astrology by Linda Lancashire 0776 4466381 www.lindalancashire.co.uk teresastanley1@btinternet.co.ukCapricorn Dec 22 - Jan 20 A surprise dinner party invitation could mean that you will meet your soul mate or someone you want to strike up a relationship of one kind or another with. Your wicked sense of humour and fun will make you extremely popular, but beware of a so-called friend who is jealous and possessive of you. Aquarius Jan 21 - Feb 19 It’s possible that someone you are closely linked with is still pulling the wool over your eyes even though you protest their innocence. Shock events and developments that have taken place very close to home recently have affected you more than you care to admit. Pisces Feb 20 - Mar 20 Someone who has cheated or fleeced you out of some money will get their just rewards. It’s payback time for them and you can look forward to receiving some very unexpected money or the chance of starting a brand-new business venture. Relax by spending time in the garden or clearing out cupboards, lofts, sheds and garages. The poor cow managed to escape an abattoir sparking a hunt with armed officers. After the deed was done, the force released a statement reading: “We are sad to update the bull has been found and has been shot by police firearms officers. This is the only option we had ensure everyone’s safety.” But was it the only option? It’s a question locals have been asking themselves of late. Better the cow was killed for its meat, right? Magpies making a meal of donkeys Fighting Crime by sitting down A Lincolnshire couple have been praised by a judge for their bravery in apprehending a burglar… by sitting on him. Yes, you read that right. John and Susan Headington woke in the wee small hours to find a ruffian breaking into their home. John managed to put the would-be burglar into a bear hug, before he broke free but fell over in scenes that sound lifted from the script of Bottom. Since the ruffian was already on the floor, Susan took the initiative and sat on him until police arrived. Never underestimate the power of sitting, it might just save your life.
