< Previous20 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAYThe art of joy Developed by Japanese organisational consultant, Marie Kondo, this method sees individuals asking themselves if their clothing, possessions and miscellanea “spark joy”. As showcased in her books and recent Netflix series, this can lead to a cleaner, clutter-free home. In turn, this can help de-clutter the mind, reducing stress and boosting fulfilment and happiness. Tidy home, tidy mind and all that. Although the method focusses more on belongings and sundries, it can and should be applied to interior design. Of course this means your existing décor, but also all future purchases. We’re all guilty of impulse HOMESTrends come and go and, most recently, interior design is favouring a cleaner, more minimalist approach. As a concept, minimalism often confuses some people whose interpretation is to rid themselves of all but the bare essentials. Although this may work for some, most of us search for something more in our homes. It’s probably for this reason why the KonMari method has resonated with so many people. Turnbull’s Showroom Manager Olivia Hopkins took time out to talk to Lincolnshire Today about the secret of the company's continued success. Turnbull is predominantly seen as a builders’ merchant, so what do people get from using a company like you as opposed to a conventional kitchen supplier? A lot of people think we just provide goods for the building trade, but we’ve actually been designing kitchens and bathrooms for over 40 years. We work a lot with local developers designing the kitchens and bathrooms for everything from affordable housing to luxury developments. So we have a huge amount of knowledge and experience that we’re able to share with homeowners as well. Our customers love the personal touch that we can offer as a local, family-run, independent business and many of them return to us again and again. Our showroom team members are skilled at helping customers through the design process; they work on a non-commissioned basis, so customers can be confident that the products they recommend are the right ones for their project. We’re here to support customers right through to installation - that’s great reassurance for many people who DON’T buy new bathrooms and kitchens very often. Some of the team even come from a trade background like Greg in our Boston bathroom showroom who was a plumber before joining Turnbull. He has lots of great trade tips to tap into! What can we expect if we visit a Turnbull showroom? We have over 36 display kitchens and 56 display bathrooms available to view 24-25.qxp_Layout 1 18/03/2019 14:35 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 25TURNBULL KITCHENS & BATHROOMS - Q&Aacross our five showrooms to inspire you. With a wide range of contemporary and traditional kitchens and bathrooms equipped with the latest gadgets and design features. In your experience, what’s the number one reason people decide to change their kitchens? Lots of people start thinking about replacing a kitchen around the 10-year mark - when it starts to look a bit dated and tired. They want refreshed rooms which reflect their lifestyles and new appliances with the latest, efficient technology. A kitchen should be a room to welcome you home. If it’s not doing that and you’re just not in love with it anymore, it’s probably time for a change. How is Turnbull growing to keep up with demand? We currently have showrooms in Sleaford, Brigg, Newark and two in Boston. In 2018 we completely refurbished our Newark showroom and have just completed a new site dedicated to kitchens in Hamilton Way, Boston. Our Brigg showroom is undergoing refurbishment at the moment, due to be completed by the end of spring 2019, and we have exciting plans to open a brand-new showroom in Lincoln in 2019/20. Watch this space, or visit us at www.turnbullsonline.co.uk/showrooms to find out more! Showrooms are open: Monday to Friday 7:30 am to 5:00 pm and Saturdays 7:30 am - 12:30 pm. He spent much of his youth in and around the studio of local landscape artist Derric van Rensburg. It was here that JJ first fell in love with bright colour and graphic art – attributes that would later become his hallmarks. Forging his own career as an artist led JJ to study graphic design at Cape College whilst working as an apprentice at a busy tattoo studio. When JJ returned to the UK in the mid-nineties it was with the aim of becoming a professional tattoo artist. For Mixing things up a few years he lived and worked in Camden but struggled to make ends meet, so he headed back to his native Plymouth. In 1998 he enlisted at the Plymouth College of Art and Design to further his study in commercial printing. The next few years saw JJ work as a self-taught graphic designer in the South West of England. He also moved into professional sign making to help pay the bills. But during this time he was also experimenting with his own art, honing his skills and style. Inspired after selling a few of his acrylic paintings through a local gallery, JJ decided in 2009 than it was time to move back to London to pursue an art career. In early 2011, he used his tattoo experience as the inspiration for a series of instantly-iconic black and white tattooed celebrity images. They’ve been copied, ripped off and imitated in the years since, but JJ Adams brings a punk sensibility to the art world, using mixed-media to put a new spin on pop cultural icons, celebrities and landmarks. It’s an approach that’s made him one of the most collectable British artists of his generation. 26-27.qxp_Layout 1 18/03/2019 14:37 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 27ARTISTIC LINCOLNSHIRE nothing beats the original. Since then, JJ has become one of the UK’s most talked about and collectable artists, featured in publications including Vogue and GQ and counting Rolls Royce among his clients. In 2016 he was a finalist for Fine Art Trade Guild’s ‘Best Selling Published Artist’ award and, a year later, shortlisted for ‘Artist of the Year 2017’. And this year, his last print release for Valentine’s Day sold out within a weekend. There’s a good reason why. His work offers a powerful skewering of celebrity culture, as well as continuing the work of his pop art predecessors. JJ is undeniably a satirist and in playing with context and the characteristics of beloved characters, he’s making a statement. Some of his most popular and visually dazzling works are his pop culture mash-ups, many of which speak to the nostalgia for the THE LITTLE RED GALLERY Love art? JJ uses a range of new and mixed media in his work from spray painting to hand painting acrylics, stencilling, screen painting, collage and digital composite and matte painting alongside photography and street art. It gives his work a feel of being a part of and outside of the art establishment, punk but still highly sought after. This is reflected in the mix of artists that inspired JJ at art college from Norman Rockwell, Sir Peter Blake, pop artists Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, obscure illustration artists like Drew Struzan, Guy Peelleart and Storm Thorgenson, to lowbrow artists like Coop and Jim Phillips. JJ’s work really needs to be seen to be believed. Fortunately, The Little Red Gallery in Lincoln has a selection of JJ’s art. Barbara explained: “We didn’t really start to do anything until the children had grown up, and then I used to look after my parents in their last days, so after that I was free to do more in the garden. My husband and I then did what we wanted to it. Rather than just looking after it and keeping it maintained, we decided to build more little areas.” When the couple arrived the garden was, as Barbara said, “very basic.” They did not have any particular plan when creating the garden, instead it simply developed as they went along. Barbara said: “We decided we wanted some fencing up so we added a bit to start with, then we added a bit more, then we added a shed and had the patio redone, and I thought I’d quite like a greenhouse to grow things in, so we added that and other things!” The garden now flourishes with plants and colour: a wonderful transformation. The transformation has not been without its challenges though. When asked about any hurdles the couple have had to overcome, Barbara said: “There used to be a lot of big trees in the garden, so when you’re digging down you sometimes get great big roots which you have to contend with. Another difficulty is the leylandii hedge we inherited, which we had to cut right back because it was casting too much shade and was just getting too wide - over a meter in width from back to front. There are also big trees in next door’s garden that cause lots of shade. The trees have preservation orders on them, so they can’t really do anything with them. That’s not been insurmountable though - I’ve just changed the plants, putting in those that will cope with the shade.” There are a wide variety of plants in the garden for both sun and shade because of its situation. These include, to name a few: clematis, hostas, Solomon’s seal, delphiniums, cerinthe and a passion flower that climbs just outside of the conservatory and produces fruit. The couple grow a lot of other fruits and vegetables too, including raspberries, 30 Á28-31.qxp_Layout 1 18/03/2019 14:39 Page 2Next >
