Can you tell us more about the response? Sara Bird: The brand opened to great acclaim and we were approached by celebrity influencers who went on to wear SqWears on the front row at London Fashion Week. The brand has featured in a photo shoot at The Ritz and is now being followed by high-profile plus-size advocate Gemma Collins whose stylists have been in touch with a desire to dress her for future TV appearances. This sort of publicity and interest has literally blown my mind. LT: What’s the SqWear brand all about? SB: I’ve already got a myriad of brands under my belt because my creative brain never stops. I designed a new garment called a SqWear which has attracted a registered design and is a unique silhouette for the fashion industry. I started sewing SqWears in my loft and was selling them at home parties enabling women to join in and effectively run their own businesses as a team of agents and partners developed. The brand has evolved over the years into the UK’s only exclusive plus size couture luxury fashion label made right here in Lincolnshire. LT: What’s been the best part? SB: I love working with women and enabling working mothers to gain flexibility yet be able to support their families, so I’ve designed a new business model that is solely focused on re-S wears exclusive plus-sized luxury fashion In February, local style savant and businesswoman Sara Bird launched SqWears Couture at at Pure London AW19/20 to great acclaim. We sat down with Sara to learn more.inventing flexible business opportunities for the modern woman. Plus size fashion is an incredibly big business and I needed to try different and really unexpected things. Commercial success alone is not enough, it’s not just about running a business. My dream is to develop a sustainable opportunity for women to have the flexibility to live their best lives and I want to make sure that my dream and passion is felt, shared and joined by women in this community and beyond. Women over fifty are busy doing it for ourselves, we are often underestimated as a demographic and are still fabulous, motivated and entrepreneurial. Chances are you’ve got some eyeshadow or lippy that’s been hanging around a while, maybe even from last spring. With most make-up only lasting about a year, it’s time to go through your make-up piece by piece and throw-out anything that’s past its best. While you’re at it, it’s also worth giving all your make-up brushes a good clean. All you need is some warm water and a touch of brush cleanser or soap. Just make sure they’re rinsed thoroughly and put away dry. Make-up After that’s been taken care of, it’s time to get your beauty routine ready for spring, that means mixing your products up. Every season brings a new set of challenges for skin and hair care and with the rise in temperature and humidity, what had been go-to staples through winter will now work against you. As dead skin can build up in cold weather, it’s time to break out an exfoliator and scrub yourself into the new season. Experts advise masking up to three times a week to get smoother hydrated skin. It’s important not to overdo it as it’s possible to exfoliate too much and leave skin sore and dry-looking. However you do it, exfoliating should be paired with a moisturising routine. But step away from that heavy, oil-based moisturiser you’ve been turning to all winter. Using them in spring can actually result in breakouts, so opt for something like a hydrating serum instead. You’ll also want to protect skin from the sun, so invest in a good-quality moisturiser or serum with a decent SPF level. The same goes for lip balms and glosses as your lips are also vulnerable to sun damage. Most of us are hoping for a long hot spring and summer the kind we were treated to in 2018, but we have to admit that with the sun comes a lot of squinting. To help combat the effect of all that squinting you need to arm yourself with a decent eye cream, one with a high concentration of antioxidants and peptides. This combination can help to defend against the effects of UV rays as well as plump up existing lines and wrinkles. On the fashion front, you can help yourself and look fabulous with a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses. If you’re stuck for inspiration, keep an eye on our accessories pages or have a flick through some past issues (available to read for free on our website). Your make-up choices matter and going for cheap artificial products isn’t going to do skin any favours. So try mixing things up with natural make-up featuring real minerals. There’s plenty of choice available out there and your skin will thank you for it. It’s also so important to drink plenty of water as hydration is as much about what’s going into your body as what’s happening on the outside. Haircare Usher in the new season with a brand-new cut and style. If you’ve been wanting to go for a shorter look, then now’s the perfect opportunity. Whatever you decide, it’s important to protect hair – especially colour-treated hair – from sun damage. Keep an eye out for hair products that offer UV protection, such as sprays and cream formulas. Just as you would with sun cream on skin, make sure these products are reapplied throughout the day for maximum coverage and effect. Just don’t forget about the scalp, because a sun-burned scalp isn’t something you want to be dealing with. So make sure any UV product is applied to the whole head rather than just the lengths of hair. Similarly, you’ll want to have the right shampoo and conditioner at your disposal, because there’s as many different varieties as there are types of hair. There’s no good getting your hair colour-treated only to keep using the same old shampoo. And if you suffer from frizzy hair – as a lot of us do this time of year – spend a little extra and get a frizz-combatting shampoo and conditioner. If you’re planning on heading down to the pool anytime soon, it’s worth rinsing your hair before and after getting into the water. This will help to protect it against chlorine which can soak into hair and wreak havoc on colour-treated hair, especially under the hot sun. If you’ll be spending time on the beach or in the sea, experts recommend wearing a swim cap. With plenty of fun snazzy styles available, you don’t have to worry about looking silly. Don’t forget about your hot styling tools either. We’re talking about the blow dryer, curling irons and smoothing brushes et al. Cumulative heat exposure can damage hair over time so do yourself a favour and turn the heat setting down. A medium setting is much better for hair, and most styles can be accomplished without issue. Let’s face it, though there’ll be some sun to be had, April is best known for its showers. So you might want to practice putting your hair up in a tail or bun, something that won’t get ruined in the wind and rain or get in your face. 48-49.qxp_Layout 1 18/03/2019 15:39 Page 2Next >
