It’s a largeestablished garden with an extensive selection of alpines, dwarfbulbs, conifers and woodland plants. The highlight is a superblandscaped rockery with a stream course and waterfalls, a largepool, raised beds, troughs and island beds.Specialist growers of alpines, dwarf bulbs and woodland plants,Pottertons regularly attend plant fairs and flower showsthroughout the UK and have been Chelsea Gold Medallists atotal of seven times! The nursery was established in 1971 by Bob and JeanPotterton, together with Alan Martin. Originally based inGrimsby, the business, which was then called Potterton & Martin, moved to its current location in Nettleton in 1976 and has sincebuilt upon its success and expanded considerably.Originally just one acre, and then two, the site now coversnine acres and, as well as the nursery, the extensive gardens havebeen landscaped and developed over the past ten years. 2012 seesthe garden open for the first time to visitors on Saturday 12thand Sunday 13th May to raise money for the NGS.The Potterton family are keen horticulturists – Bob used togrow and show carnations at shows and events throughout thecountry. Bob and Jean’s son Rob and his wife Jackie joined thebusiness in 1986. In 1994, they acquired and developed the sevenacre field next to the original site – building their home here andlandscaping the gardens.Bob and Jean retired in 1997 and sadly Bob passed away in2000. Jean still lives here and is very much actively involved inmaintaining the gardens. As specialist growers of alpines, dwarf bulbs and woodland plants, theyoffer an extensive range of over 1500varieties and supply plants by mail orderto customers all over the world. The NGS event in May will allowvisitors to explore the wonderfulgardens and learn about the manyvarieties of alpine. April to June is themain alpine flowering period, so thegarden will be at its best with Dianthus,Lewisia, Gentiana, and Phlox inabundance. There will also be a prettydisplay of bulbs, including Arisaemaand Allium, plus hardy Orchids.Rob and Jackie’s garden, adjacent tothe nursery, will be open and the maindisplay here is the impressive rockery, stream course and pond, which wascompleted in 2000. The couple workedwith landscaper, Peter Orme, to createthis amazing structure. Peter hadpreviously worked with the Pottertons, creating displays at flower showsnationwide. Entering the ChelseaFlower Show on ten occasions, the teamwere Chelsea Gold Medallists seventimes! They have also previouslyachieved ‘Best in Show’ at Harrogateand will be attending again this year. The structure of the rockery, createdby Peter Orme, has been complementedby Rob and Jackie’s careful planting ofalpines, including Phlox andDianthus. All of the stone for therockery was transported fromYorkshire! The pond was dug out; twopools created and a water courseadded. The result is a natural habitatfor wildlife, with an abundance of fishand heron – this is a unique structureand a magnificent feature in thePottertons garden.Covering around five acres, thegarden is mainly grass with therockery as the central feature. Jackiehas also created a trough garden and awall garden around the bungalow, aswell as a selection of raised beds nearto the rockery. The Pottertons propagate andproduce all of their own plants and arealpine specialists. Jackie explains,“Alpines are very hardy and requiregood light, drainage and excellentventilation – thriving in opensituations. Alpines are great inrockeries and sink gardens and, even ifyou have limited space, a small alpinegarden can be achieved.“We have two large greenhouses onsite, which we use for propagation. Wereally enjoy creating new varieties andwe always look forward to expandingour collection of plants.”Rob, Jackie and Jean are joined bytwo full-time employees, Lisa Plaskittand Rick Maddison, and together theyare dedicated to building upon thesuccess of the nursery and constantlydeveloping the gardens. The NGS open weekend is anexciting time for all of the team and, during my visit, plans andpreparations were already in fullswing!During the open weekend, the local,Lincolnshire branch of the AlpineGarden Society will be putting up adisplay in the central greenhouse.Rob’s mum Jean will also be openingher garden which features a lovelypond and some beautiful orchids.28 PHOTOS: POTTERTONS NURSERY25-28:Layout 1 13/4/12 12:01 Page 328 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYGARDENSRefreshments and cakes will also be served.Alpines on display will include Fritillaria, Daphne and Draba, aswell as the Pottertons own variety of Campanula raineri ‘NettletonGold’.
