The goodnews is that new memories are still beingcreated, as the area continues to paytribute to its past while remaining avibrant and attractive place to visit. There are certainly some seaside townsthat never really got over the rise of thepackage holiday and weren’t able to finda new role for themselves. That’s not thecase with Cleethorpes. It’s true to say thatthe whole of South Yorkshire andLincolnshire doesn’t descend on it enmasse as they used to in the golden daysof the fifties and sixties, but it still enjoysa regular stream of visitors – and not justwhen the sun’s shining either.Cleethorpes has proven itself to be afantastic year-round destination in recentyears, thanks to the efforts of a host oftop independent traders. Sea View Streethas certainly established itself as one ofthe county’s top shopping destinations, thanks to its vibrant mix of retailersselling a fantastic, varied mix of the latestfashion, high quality homewear andwonderful gifts. The retailers really do gothat extra mile to source unique and highend items and often they’re the onlystockists for miles around – meaningyou’re guaranteed to find that specialsomething. Slipped in between theshops too are a handful of fantasticdining establishments. One thing that’s really helped Sea ViewStreet establish itself as a top place tovisit is its community feel as it plays amajor role in a host of special events. One of the best examples comes thisJune when it’s the centre of attention onArmed Forces Weekend.Over the past few years the shops inSea View Street have taken part in thecelebrations, going out onto the Streetand hosting vintage-inspired activitiesand mounting entertainment. That’slikely to be the case again on theweekend of 27th and 28th June, whereCleethorpes will also host the usualmoving parade of servicemen, flypast andfireworks display. A few weeks later, meanwhile, on Saturday 18th July, there’smore excitement and entertainment withthe annual Community Carnival whichbrings everyone together to celebrateand raise money for good causes. Those who have visited Cleethorpes formany years will doubtless have fondmemories of some famous old venues. The Winter Gardens may no longer bepart of the landscape but you can stillvisit the old Queen’s Hotel, which is nowhome to a popular eatery and a fabulous12 ÁPHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/PHOTOSEEKERWhen thesunshines10-14_Layout 1 17/04/2015 10:27 Page 212 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYGRIMSBY & CLEETHORPESfashion retailer, and enjoy traditionalcuisine at the Corner House.Meanwhile this summer The Piershould return to its role as one of thefavourite destinations in the county. It’santicipated that it will open its doors tothe public again in July with a new-looktearoom, a traditional pub and the 1873restaurant, named after the year inwhich it first opened, with panoramicviews out to sea. A large multi-functionalspace will play home to an events centreoffering business conferences, exhibitions and a variety of liveentertainment. Managing Director Simon Huxfordsays, “We believe that we are going todeliver a venue that the area is proud ofas well as one that supports the localcommunity. The Pier will replace the gapleft in the entertainment market by theclosure of the Winter Gardens. Our aim isfor The Pier to be a successful part of theregeneration of Cleethorpes, to aidincreased visitors to the town andsupport local businesses.”The restaurant at The Pier will join ahost of top eateries that are alreadybased in Cleethorpes – there’s a real caféculture and there’s nothing moreenjoyable during the warmer monthsthan relaxing outside enjoying good foodand good company.Just down Cleethorpe Road there’s also14 ÁThere’s excitement and entertainment with the annual CommunityCarnival which brings everyone together to celebrate and raisemoney for good causes on Saturday 18th JulyEvents such as Armed ForcesDay bring out the best inCleethorpes’ community spirit10-14_Layout 1 17/04/2015 10:28 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRETODAY13Hand tied bouquets andbaskets for all occasionsBluebellsUnit 2, Pinfold Lane,Holton-le-Clay01472 236949Lilies115a St Peter’s Avenue,Cleethorpes01472 200345www.millstonegardencentre.co.uk01472 828 150 Cheapside, Waltham, Grimsby DN37 0HX EXCLUSIVESAME DAYDELIVERYAT A TIMETO SUIT YOU!Mon to Sat: 8:00—5:00pm. It’s not atown that has enjoyed a huge amount ofpositive PR over the years and recentcontroversial TV shows and films haven’thelped with the image. Look closer, however, and the town itself seems infine shape. The town centre remainsvibrant and there aren’t the swathes ofempty shops you often see in othertowns of a similar size. The communityspirit ensures there’s plenty of enthusiasmand energy. There are some less impressive parts ofthe town but much work is going on tospruce these up. Plans are in place for theformer Birds Eye site in Ladysmith Roadand the old Western School inCambridge Road to play host to newdevelopments, with the Councilacquiring funding to hopefully turn theplans into reality sooner rather than later, following on from the sprucing up of thepreviously unloved Freeman Street, whichcertainly looks better than it did a fewyears ago.Abbeygate in Grimsby certainly remainsone of the town’s best-kept secrets – justa short walk from the railway station, thispretty terrace makes for a delightful andrelaxing shopping experience, playinghost to a number of independent shopsthat are just the place if you’re looking forsomething out of the ordinary, delightfulrestaurants and cafes where you can relaxand meet friends and beauty specialiststhat can provide the perfect pamper. It’s alittle oasis of calm amid the hustle andbustle of the town. There are some top diningestablishments elsewhere in the town aswell – unsurprising given Grimsby’sreputation as Europe’s food capital. It’sstill responsible for providing a hugeamount of the nation’s seafood throughits docks and numerous restaurants havefresh Grimsby fish taking pride of placeon their menus alongside other top localproduce. The people of Grimsby andCleethorpes have a pride in their areawhich means they try harder to makesure the area gets in the spotlight for allthe right reasons. This means there’salways a host of community eventstaking place and an independent spiritthat makes it a great place to live andvisit. When the sun shines Cleethorpes isup there with the very best of Britishresorts, while Grimsby offers all you couldwant from a bustling town – ensuring thearea is creating new memories to add tothose of the past.10-14_Layout 1 17/04/2015 10:28 Page 51stissues only £1Great reasonsto subscribe...Each issue is brimming with a diverse topic range...• Heritage • Fashion • Hair & Beauty • Leisure • Homes & Gardens • County Motoring • Dining Out • What’s On • Free Reader Giveaways and much much more…First 3 issues only £1!FREE delivery to your doorReceive your copy before it hits the shopsORDER FORMYes, I would like to subscribe to Lincolnshire Today magazinefor the next 12 months, with the first 3 issues only being £1.Personal Details:First name:Last Name:Address:Town:County: Post Code:Tel: Mobile:Email:Payment by DEBIT/CREDIT cardName as it appears on card:Type of card: Mastercard / Visa / Visa Debit / OtherCard Number:Card Verification number (3 digits on signature strip):Expiry Date:Amount Authorised:Cheque enclosed YES / NO Please post this form back to: Subscriptions,Lincolnshire Today Magazine, Armstrong House, Armstrong Street, Grimsby. The trend for vintage and retro items isbig news, and certainly more and moreof us are looking towards the styles of thepast when it comes to decorating ourhomes. That includes brand new itemsproduced in a vintage style and classicpieces of furniture and accessories fromthe past. Some of the county’s finestperiod homes are the ideal showcase forthese items, but even in modern homesthere’s certainly something to be said fora few well-placed classic items offering asense of style and interest. It’s all part of the move towards peoplelooking for something different in theirhome, and something that reflects theirown personal style. This sometimesincludes bringing vintage items back tolife – renovating furniture not just by re-covering things, but by getting downalmost back to scratch. There’s no onestyle that dominates, and sometimes anitem that has been festering at the backof a pile of knick-knacks for years andyears could turn out to be the perfectfinishing touch to a room.Such has been the huge interest inantiques and collectables in recent years,Antiques Roadshow remains one of themost popular shows on TV despite beingsomething of an antique itself, havingstarted in the seventies.
