Movingfrom room to room you can feel theharmony with which each room has beencreated, while at the same timeexperiencing a taste of China here and ahint of Morocco there. You can certainlyfeel the impression of this warm, friendly, family home.Heather and Steve have lived at theproperty for some time now and explain‘We came across it after we had relocatedback to the UK after living in Brazil.’Heather and Steve recount how theytravelled and lived in various countriesincluding America, the Soviet Union,Hong Kong and, finally, Brazil. The house has three bedrooms and afurther bedroom downstairs, whichHeather is in the process of converting into a study. Downstairs the main roomsare the dining room, the living room andthe kitchen, which is Heather’s favouriteroom. ‘It was what attracted us to thehouse,’ she says. ‘It is very live-able; wecook in it and it has a sitting area where Ilike to sit and read. It has a realcommunity feel to it; however the livingroom gets the sun because it is on thesouth side.’The study that Heather is working onhas a lovely warm feel to it with rich redwalls and warm colours in thefurnishings. ‘I want it to be a place full ofbookshelves and a place to work so thatit is a proper study. The colour red fitsthe room,’ she says. The room alsocomplements the themes running in theother rooms throughout the house whichare influenced by China, Vietnam and atthe moment particularly the Middle East.‘We have lots of Chinese and Indonesianrugs and a strong Middle Eastern theme,’Heather explains. ‘The mixture of rugsthroughout the house connects therooms to each other.’ Heather’s taste for interior designcomes from the many different places she17 Á14-19_Layout 1 18/04/2016 10:41 Page 2Your local Travis Perkinshas everything you need to get the job done!• We cater for extensions, new builds and self builds• Inspirational landscaping range• Extended timber and joinery stock• Tool Hire• Plumbing and heating products in stock nowWith 15+ branches in your local area, you’re never far away from your local Travis Perkins. It’s thetravelling that shapes what I have in therooms as opposed to specifically decidingon their interior design. When we lived inHong Kong, the idea of Feng Shuibecame important to me but I don’tfollow the rules. I like to create a roomwith harmony and it’s instinctive for meto create a room in a certain way.’ Among the fantastic ornaments anddisplays from the countries that shetravels to, including wall tapestries,Vietnamese pictures and Indonesian walldecorations, Heather’s favourite is theChinese cupboard in the garden room. ‘Itis more than one hundred years old andso beautifully carved, she says. It has anintriguing history behind it too. ‘It wouldnot have survived the cultural revolutionif it had not been built over with cheapmaterials to disguise it or if it had notbeen hidden in a haystack. It is myfavourite piece of furniture in the houseand I often wonder what it would say if itcould talk - imagine the stories it wouldhave to tell,’ she says. The barn conversion outside the houseis a huge community project that wasstarted three years ago and will hopefullybe completed by the end of the year.Steve has been working on the19 Á14-19_Layout 1 18/04/2016 10:41 Page 414-19_Layout 1 18/04/2016 10:42 Page 5LINCOLNSHIRETODAY19HOMESrenovation with friends who have helped with the building, electricity and plumbing. ‘We started by digging out all ofthe stone by hand and washing it which took six monthsand this was then used for the walls outside’ Steve explains.‘We are currently washing the walls and woodwork but thebest part of the project is when we can see progression.’The barn will have three bedrooms and may be a place forguests to enjoy. ‘Heather has lots of plans and ideas for the interior designof the barn. ‘Steve is very good with the structural plans andthen I have the artistic vision,’ she says. ‘Originally I wanteda Moroccan design for the fireplace with mosaics but therewas resistance from the others. I still wanted somethingdramatic so we have created a fireplace made from hugepieces of stone from a quarry in Hartoft, near Rosedale, inthe North Yorkshire Moors’. Heather feels that a Moroccantheme would be perfect in one of the bathrooms as in thebedroom upstairs. ‘The room has a low ceiling so I wouldlike it to have mattresses and cushions with a strongMoroccan theme,’ she says. With a home full of beautiful antiques and ornamentsfrom such a vast array of countries, Heather has a wonderfulsense of style and what makes this even more amazing isthat it comes so naturally to her. With her interior creativityand Steve’s structural inventiveness, revisiting the barn, when complete, is something that will be just too good tomiss.CONSTRUCTION TEAM SERVICESFor ALL your building requirementsSleaford01529 461429•project management•refurbishment•extensions•new houses•conversions•demolition•Specialists in pools and basementstructures and reinforced concrete•Professional and client referencesavailable on requestDave Antink07769 263854construction_da@yahoo.co.uk14-19_Layout 1 18/04/2016 10:42 Page 6Next >
