It can be hard to keepon top of the contradictory tips and how-toguides, never mind actually practicing any of it,but a reliable beauty regime doesn’t have to becomplicated, expensive or weird. As we edge closer to the summer months, what worked for winter isn’t going to cut itnow. So your beauty regime will have to altersomewhat, and that means ditching some allthe excess baggage. If Lincolnshire is gracedwith the sun at all in the coming months, you’llwant to arm yourself with a good sunscreen. Allsun creams and lotions contain moisturiser, souse in place of your morning moisturise tosafeguard against the sun and to avoid a greasyface. It’s true what they say, you can have toomuch of a good thing. For all its health benefits, the sun also meansmake-up will smudge, smear and drip. Sweat isdownright impossible to avoid, especially whenthe temperature’s up, but there are ways tocircumvent the streaking problem. If au naturalisn’t your thing, try a self-tanner in place of basemake-ups. It might take a little longer to applythan foundation, but it only needs applying acouple of times a week and does just a good ajob at covering up and boosting confidence. Some even contain SPF, which means savingeven more time on your morning ritual. After all, when they sun is shining, you want to catch itwhile you can. Regularly washing hair is one of the biggesttemptations at this time of year, but dailyscrubbing can wash your locks of preciousnutrients and oils, leaving it lank and lustreless.Supplement a couple of weekly washes withwarm rinses or dry shampoo which absorbsexcess oil on your strands and scalp and leaveshair looking luscious as well as adding volume. Ablow dryer is an indispensable tool, both forstyling and timesaving, but overusing it can leadto hair looking frizzy and dried. Focussing on theroots and fringe while leaving the rest to drynaturally can have fabulous results and safeplenty of time in the morning. Of course, not all celebrities subscribe tofaddish beauty regimes or health hacks, andthere’s nothing wrong with finding andfollowing a role model. But beauty can be ahighly personal routine, and finding what worksfor your body and time management is one ofthe secrets to looking great. SimplydivineSimplicity is key for an effective and reliable beauty regime that’s kind onskin and hair and doesn’t take all day. 42-43_Layout 1 18/04/2016 10:53 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY43HAIR & BEAUTYPHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/ZOOM TEAM42-43_Layout 1 18/04/2016 10:53 Page 2PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/YODIYIMALL IN THEHEART It’s the most important organ in the human body, andfor many of us it goes uncared for. Consider yourheart this month, and try to do something to help it. 44-45_Layout 1 18/04/2016 11:08 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY45HEALTH & FITNESSCoronary heart disease (CHD) is one ofthe leading causes of death in the UK,and is responsible for over 70,000 deaths. To put that in context, CHD accounts foraround one in six men, and one in tenwomen. It’s not all doom and gloomhowever, for a healthy lifestyle can helpto mitigate the risk of CHD, while alsohelping to protect the body against arange of other conditions. Be ActiveRegular exercise is not just good forprotecting the heart, it also helps toboost the mood and reduce stress, whichare other factors that can lead to reducedhealth. The average person should aimfor a little over two hours a week, orthirty minutes a day – but this shouldalways be adapted for what kind oflifestyle you live. Someone who works ina sedentary job could certainly benefitfrom a little extra exercise, so considerwalking or biking to work if possible.Keep a healthy weightA person who is overweight has anincreased chance of developing CHD, soit’s important to stick to a healthy andbalanced diet. What constitutes a healthyweight is different from person to person, dependent upon height, age and gender. If in doubt a BMI calculator can give youa rough idea, but don’t focus too muchon such stats. Cut down on saturated fat and saltCholesterol is a major cause of CHDand should be lowered whereverpossible. Eating food that is high insaturated fat can raise the level ofcholesterol in the bloodstream. Focus onlean cuts of meat, and lower-fat dairyproducts. Fish is also a fantastic optiondue to the vitamins it contains, and thelack of saturated fat. When it comes toseasonings, try to stay away from salt –or if that feels impossible look into someother salt substitutes.Eat plenty of fruit and vegYou should be looking to get your five aday for a variety of reasons, from skin toeyes – and for every other part of thebody, but it also works to reduce the risk ofheart disease. These don’t have to be eatenon their own if that’s not an attractiveoption. Try mixing fruit and veg intocurries, smoothies or even pasta sauces.Try to cut down on alcohol and quitsmokingAlcohol is packed with calories, so this ismore of a “maintain your weight” pieceof advice than anything else. There’snothing wrong with having some funevery now and then, but just keep inmind that it will add on to howevermuch you’ve eaten – so work it off at thegym afterwards. When it comes tosmoking however, there is no such wayto work back the damage. Smoking isone of the main causes of CHD, andstudies show that someone who has quitfor even just a year – has half the risk ofdeveloping CHD as a regular smoker.Add onto that the improved healthfrom avoiding lung disease and a host ofother problems, and quitting smokingshould be at the top of every person’slist. The jury is still officially out onwhether vapes and e-ciggs are free fromthe risks, but early studies suggest theylikely can’t be worse than cigarettes. Once upon a time thetown was a major export hub, secondonly to London itself in the amount oftrade it handled each year. This is whatled to a major city in the US beingnamed after the town, which manybelieved would remain an industrial tradehub for much of the UK. As the wooltrade that Boston so heavily relied onbegan to die down however, the townfound itself left behind by some of itslarger cousins, but that only means it hasretained much of its rustic charm –instead of becoming a sprawlingmetropolis like many larger cities. Nowadays the town isn’t quite sopowerful, but that doesn’t make it anyless of a spot for shopping and tourismwithin Lincolnshire. Beyond that, Bostonmanages to maintain many of its links tothe past and is quick to celebrate itscultural heritage. The huge tower of St Botolph’s Church(or the Boston Stump, as the locals aremore likely to call it) dominates the town, and it continues to bring peopletogether. It celebrated its sevenhundredth anniversary not so long agoand the success demonstrated how iconicand cherished it remains. Equally iconic isthe Maud Foster Mill – one of the few stillworking and producing flour. It’s estimated that around half ofBoston’s population is employed in theagriculture industry – so if any town iswell equipped to highlight the best ofLincolnshire produce, you’d suggest itwas probably this one. This foodie heritage continues with itsever popular markets. Fresh food startedbeing sold in the town’s market placearound a thousand years ago and thetradition continues – in exactly the samelocation – to this day.
