There’s a certain charm in the rustic, and the idyllic image of an Englishfarm house or cottage is an endearing symbol of these green and pleasant lands. Yet there’s nothing wrongwith mixing things up.Up and coming and established creatives alike bemoan the dearth of fresh ideas. While it’s true that thecreative barrel has been scraped bare, new ideas exist in assimilation. In music, it means combining styles thathave hitherto existed separately, and in food it’s called fusion. It’s post-modern; it’s a mash-up and its now.For interior design, it means pulling from different cultures and styles. Traditional English décor can beembellished with Nubian design, or French chic could be paired with the vibrant colours of India. Be asaudacious as you please. There are no rules. As with food, sample everything life has to offer. Trust us, your interior design will be all the better for it,just look at this exuberant collection we’ve assembled. 16 Á14-17_Layout 1 19/04/2017 12:02 Page 2A beautiful example of Zariembroidery, this jewellerychest available from Hutsly isIndian luxury at its best. 16 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYHOMESTABLEWARE • GLASSWAREAchurch & SonsHARDWARE STORE16/17 Market Place, Horncastle. But,having had their first plans rejected back in 2001, infavour of ‘a more traditional build’ the couple nevergave up and returned to the drawing board a fewtimes until they finally came up with a plan that fittedin with the planning departments wishes and ticked allthe boxes for their family. Peter explains, “We wanted something that let asmuch natural light in as possible and made full use ofthe views over the lake but the council insisted theywanted something more traditional which isunderstandable I guess. Somewhere there had to be acommon ground but we felt we couldn’t sacrifice suchgreat views and with the help of our architects, SimonNicholson design, we eventually found a design thatsuited us down to the ground.”The project was finally given the green light andwhile the family could live in the somewhat run downbungalow, work could begin in earnest behind it. “Thefirst task,” Peter explains, “was laying a substantial‘raft’ over the edge of the lake, to give the house theappearance that it is actually floating on the waterrather than being sat at the side of it. Of course, ourIf you work in design, you areprobably tired of hearing the wordsinnovation and collaboration but tryas we might, we couldn’t think ofbetter words to describe how Peterand Jackie Stephenson’s dreamhome came together, which tooknearly 20 years to complete. 20 ÁA one offdream home 18-23_Layout 1 19/04/2017 12:09 Page 118-23_Layout 1 19/04/2017 12:09 Page 2Next >
