< Previous80 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYThe story ofLincolnshire is acomplex andfascinating one, filled withinnovation, surpriseand intrigue. Pockets of rural Lincolnshire still appearperfectly verdant, as if caught in theprimordial, pre-human world. Even withits land mass, one doesn’t have to travelfar to see the criss-cross of telephonecables bisect the sky, or a homely cottagetucked here and there. At thisintersection of the modern andtraditional exists one of the UK’s mostfascinating legacies, a façade begging tobe scratched back and its historyrevealed. The number of market townsthroughout the county, and our historicmain city, see our lives unfoldingalongside our ancestors, their livesinterwoven with ours like ghosts. To lookupon aged architecture, consider acobble street or spare a thought for anancient battle is to breathe new life intothe long dead, and spare a moment ofreverence for things passed. The old andnew collide with The Knight’s Trail, thehighly anticipated follow-up to thepopular Barons’ Charter Trail from 2015. The beauty of the Barons was in itscelebration of culture, history and societywith the city of Lincoln as exciting andelectrifying as any in England. The encorecomes from Lincoln BusinessImprovement Group (BIG) and its partnerorganisation – Visit Lincoln – whotogether devised this latest Trail inpartnership with Wild in Art to mark the800th anniversary of the Battle of Lincoln. The attraction is comprised of 36 Knights, all of which have been sponsored bybusinesses and organisations and will beinstalled in and around the city centre. Atthe time of publishing, the Knights willjust about have made their public debut,© shutterstock/VanderWolf ImagesThis faircounty80-83_Layout 1 19/04/2017 12:33 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY81THE HERITAGE TRAILand will continue to draw in the crowdsuntil September 3.After the impressive gothic spires of thecathedral, Lincoln’s crowning glory is itseponymous castle, which was recentlyawarded a prestigious Gold Accoladefrom VisitEngland. The Romans were thefirst to settle in what became Lincoln inaround 50 AD, and topped the hill with awooden fortress. Some ten decades later,William the Conqueror arrived in the thenruined city. He ordered the constructionof Lincoln Castle and the cathedral, builder over the Roman settlement.Following his invasion of England, Williamcommissioned the Domesday Book, listing the taxable value of his kingdom. It’s fitting that the book will be exhibitedat Lincoln Castle over the summer, wherepeople far and wide can come and gazeupon our nation’s earliest, mostimportant and treasured public record. The castle is, of course, home to one ofonly four remaining copies of MagnaCarta, a document outlining basic rightswhich was signed by King John in 1215. Lincoln can lay claim to foreverchanging the nature of warfare, introducing the tank into the First WorldWar and altering the narrative of humanhistory. The capabilities of infantry andartillery had been combined into anefficient instrument of destruction. Forthousands of years before it, horses hadbeen indispensable to warfare.Lincolnshire continues to enjoy a specialrelationship with horses. Its famous flatlands offer idyllic backdrops for a gentlecanter. This landform alone means thatstables and houses have plenty of openspace on which to keep horses. It’s thenumber of famous racetracks in thecounty that solidify this relationship, withhorse racing dating back centuries. Like the theatre before it, the racesoffered a cross section of society, wherethe rich rubbed shoulders with paupers. The rampant pick pockets, however, sawsome of the more distinguished visitors82 Á80-83_Layout 1 19/04/2017 12:33 Page 2Gift ShopCOME AND MEET MORE THAN 350 RESCUED HORSES AND DONKEYS!FREEADMISSIONCaféPlay ParkPicnic AreaBransby Horses, Bransby, Lincoln, LN1 2PH | www.bransbyhorses.co.uk | 01427 788464 Bransby Horses - Rescue and Welfare @BransbyHorses BransbyHorses Bransby Horses is a Registered Charity No: 1075601.Company Limited by Guarantee Registered in England and Wales No: 3711676OPEN SEVEN DAYS A WEEK, 10AM-4PM82 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYTHE HERITAGE TRAILopting for safer ground to watch.Lincoln Racecourse, the once andformer location of the LincolnshireHandicap, closed back in 1965 withthe race relocating some 40 miles toDoncaster. For this we need tothank those that had the foresight tobring a university to the university citythat didn’t actually have one!I have lived in Lincoln virtually all mylife and if that wasn’t the case it wouldbe my number one destination for acity break. Where else in the UK offersall the following attractions? The Roman Brayford with all its many restaurants, Stonebow, TheStrait, Steep Hill with Imperial Teas and the Wig & Mitre, Castle Square,The Castle and all its attractions including Magna Carta, Bailgate andthe Roman Newport Arch. In 2015 we enjoyed theBaron’s Trail, 2016 Elton John and The Poppies with the Knight’s Trailcoming up in May. Every year we have the Lincoln Grand Prix, The 10kand the Santa Run.
