Frizzy, dried-out hair and parched peeling skin can prove particularly embarrassing, so what you can pack if you’re planning ahead for your holiday adventures? If you’re looking to get your baggage allowance down, this might be the cue to leave the hair dryer and straighteners at home. Instead, if you’ve got longer hair, plait it while it’s still damp. Once it’s dry, you could let it down for loose waves or soft curls, which would certainly add a touch of glamour. Up-dos, especially the pony tail, are also big this season and they can certainly offer a low-maintenance option. Split ends, if left unchecked, can work their way upwards leaving hair dull and unmanageable so it’s well worth arranging a session at your salon before you jet off. Like the rest of your body, you’ve got to keep your hair hydrated in the summer. If you’re heading to the pool, salt water and chlorine dry hair out so before you swim, smother your hair in conditioner and slick back for a sleek look. Keeping hair generally well-conditioned will reap the rewards throughout your holidays. Intensive conditioners and hair treatments are a great way of nourishing your hair in the heat of the summer, and many of the latest treatments available from Lincolnshire’s salons and beauty specialists also have UV protection to shield hair from the sun’s damaging rays, while still looking natural and touchable. When it comes to the rest of your body, we’re all well aware of the potential damage that can be caused by the sun, hence why most of us look for effective sun creams and opt for the shade after a spell in the sun. There should be no excuse for ending up the colour of a lobster! Most beauty experts will tell you the best anti-ageing secret is sun protection. That’s not just on your holidays either - come rain or shine you need to watch out against the sun’s rays. If you’re worrying about looking dehydrated during the heat, there are plenty of ways to rescue the situation. Cleaning and pampering the skin with a good moisturiser can work wonders for both women and men. Investing in a decent quality moisturiser also make a noticeable difference with the smallest of efforts, keeping the skin hydrated and elastic and leaving it with a taunt look and a healthy glow. Indeed, men’s skin is generally thicker and oilier than a woman’s, so a foaming face wash in the morning and evening, without the need to invest in a cabinet full of products, can keep the skin cleansed. The warmer months may well be the perfect opportunity to upgrade your beauty routine to include mineral makeup. The beauty of mineral makeup is you can still use your favourite moisturiser but by applying mineral foundation you get the added SPF broad spectrum UVA and UVB from 18-30 SPF depending on brand. It’s a makeup that respects the skin. With pure milled minerals, there’s no oil to block the pores, no talc to make those fine lines feel like craters and no fragrance - just makeup that is lightweight, healing and breathable. Unlike other makeup, you can crawl in at the light of dawn and sleep in your makeup - no doubt of particular value if you’re planning a particularly raucous summer holiday - and yes, you can exercise in it too. As with much make-up, in terms of the quality of the product, you generally get what you pay for. There are some very good brands available on the High Street, but you’d be well advised to beware of brands packed full of other ingredients that aren’t good. Some can still contain up to 70% talc which makes the benefit of the mineral ingredients somewhat negligible. Most salons will offer the real deal and be happy to show you how to apply it and colour match your foundation. Salons will normally offer a mineral application after a cosmetic procedure such as permanent cosmetics, injectables or microdermabrasion. This way, even if you’ve just nipped out during your lunch break, you won’t go back to the office with angry looking waxed brows or a red shiny top lip! The arrival of the sun can send us all a bit loopy but it’s worth spending a couple of minutes before we dash out to make sure we won’t regret it the next day. If the worst happens, Lincolnshire’s specialists can provide some repair when you return!42-43.qxp_Layout 1 15/04/2019 11:51 Page 244 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAYHEALTH & FITNESSIt’s evident to many that there is an obesity problem within the UK, and our county is no different. Results for the UK and Ireland, released by Public Health England, suggest that 62.9% of adults (aged 16 or over) are listed as overweight or obese. While the breakdown between men and women is roughly average, the results suggest that men are more likely to classify as overweight, with more women being obese. This is no fault of either gender, but instead is because obesity is measured by BMI values, and men can carry more weight while maintaining a healthier BMI. People who are classed as obese will suffer from many health risks, not to mention a lower quality of life. These risks can include a higher chance of developing type 2 diabetes, being more likely to develop cancer or a higher chance of gaining high blood pressure – a major risk for stroke and heart disease. Yet again, this can be worse for woman than it is for men. Official research from Public Health England suggests that where obesity in men will make them five times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes; the same level of obesity would make a woman thirteen times more likely! This is obviously a large problem, not only for the individual, but for the NHS which has to deal with the fallout of such. On the flip side, the benefits of having a healthy weight are myriad, and contain both physiological health benefits and mental ones too, including reduced stress, better moods and more self-worth. While losing weight is a combination of diet and activity, studies show that it is the latter we have sacrificed in recent years. Our lifestyles have become more sedentary and that has made getting the exercise we need a difficult task. Gym memberships are now commonplace but have not led to enough of a change to call the matter closed. Perhaps the most obvious reason is that while gyms are a fantastic way to lose weight, it can be difficult for people to keep at them when faced not only with other people doing better than you (who we all subconsciously compare ourselves to), but also with the lack of mental Making a change Sports and activities are the best ways to lose weight, yet so often we refuse to consider them. Is it time for this mentality to change? 44-45.qxp_Layout 1 15/04/2019 12:01 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 45HEALTH & FITNESSstimulation they provide. Running on a treadmill isn’t fun; otherwise losing weight would be a simple task indeed. That is why health and fitness agencies and organisations are encouraging people to pick up a sport in their local area. Such is the advice from the “This Girl Can” campaign, seen on both the television and in local media, which encourages women both young and old to be themselves and try out a sport they might otherwise have not considered. Sports are far more likely to reduce in long-term weight loss and fitness, not only because they are competitive activities which lends itself to keeping out interest, but because they are fun, social and we can see easily identifiable results. Our ability to jog, kick box or play rugby is something we can measure in the results we achieve, and it feels good to see ourselves improving. Because most sports also involve other people, it’s a chance to make new friends – or just to do something new with existing friends. This makes the grind far easier, because instead of running for what feels like six hours on a machine, other people help to distract the mind and make the process go faster. True results are also gained when the body is pushed beyond what it can comfortably achieve, which is a difficult prospect for most people as every part of their body will be urging them to stop and rest. Competitive sport, however, makes it easy to keep going – mostly because, deep inside, it’s a human desire to win and be successful. What holds many back from investigating sports and activities such as these is often self-consciousness. It might be about weight, but sometimes it’s about what is perceived as being “too old” or “too mature” for such things. Sports are for schools and children, or so our minds claim, when the opposite could not be more true. Sports are played by people of all ages, and if it takes releasing the inner child a little to get into one, then why not? Our inner child is probably a lot fitter than we are.© Shutterstock /Boris Ryaposov44-45.qxp_Layout 1 15/04/2019 12:01 Page 246 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAYFOOD & DINING© shutterstock/Bartosz LuzakServes: 4 Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 12-15 minutes You’ll need: 500g mixed Speciality Isle of Wight Tomatoes 1 x 320-350g sheet ready-rolled all-butter puff pastry 1 medium egg, beaten 25g finely grated Parmesan cheese, vegetarian if preferred 1 buffalo mozzarella cheese, drained then torn into small pieces 2 tbsp olive oil 1 garlic clove, crushed A small handful small, fresh basil leaves Sea salt flakes and freshly ground black pepper What to do: Preheat the oven to 220°C/fan200°C/Gas 7.
