There have been many studies linked and showing how focusing too much on things you cannot directly control or influence can negatively impact a person’s happiness, which is why we’re focusing on the good of Lincolnshire this month – from all the wonderful things you can get up to all the way though to fine food and dining in what should hopefully be a much warmer and brighter month. The month of May is always something of an in-between. It fits between Easter in April and all the big shows that happen in June. This year, June will be even bigger thanks to the Queen’s Jubilee celebration, but that doesn’t mean May should be forgotten or glossed over. On the contrary, May is the last month of spring, and the last chance to get out and flaunt that spring fashion. Soon, the days might become too hot, swelteringly so if last years’ June and July were anything to go by, so May to me has always been a happy month of in-betweens. Not too hot, not too cold, not too busy but also with plenty to get out there and see. It’s a relaxing month without any big holidays or dates to prepare for. This month’s issue encapsulates that and offers a plethora of ideas and inspiration – from getting out in the garden, to decorating the home and even a couple of ideas for staying fit in the warmer weather. Lincolnshire is full of interesting places, and rather than focus on any one town, village or city this month, we’ve decided to take a look at Lincolnshire’s coastline. It’s a big part of who we are, our history and culture, and there are plenty of attractions, walks and scenic vistas to be had. All that and more in our merry May issue. Good reading, as always! Darren Thompson, owner of Ascend Climbing Gym has received funding from First Enterprise – Enterprise Loans through the Midlands Engine Investment Fund (MEIF) and the Community Investment Enterprise Facility (CIEF), backed by the Recovery Loan Scheme (RLS). In 2019 Darren opened the Louth- based climbing gym, with plans in 2020 to open a site in Lincoln city centre. After being severely impacted by COVID-19, the company was forced to delay the opening of their Lincoln city centre site due to the strict lockdown rules. Despite the challenges faced by Darren, Ascend Climbing Gym is now able to expand to Lincoln city centre. Darren Thompson, Director at Ascend Climbing Gym, commented: “First Enterprise enabled me to expand my climbing gym business by building a second gym, this has safeguarded our business and the jobs of our staff whilst creating several new jobs.” Claire Wallace from Lincoln has completed the Manchester Marathon just one year after giving birth to her first child. The 30-year-old doctor took on the challenge in aid of disability charity Sense after balancing training with raising her one-year-old daughter. Claire completed the Manchester Marathon in 3.29.04, which is a Personal Best for her. Balancing training with raising a child was occasionally a challenge for Claire, but after buying a running buggy Claire enjoyed taking her baby daughter out on runs with her. She even competed a half-marathon in September pushing her baby daughter in the buggy. Claire Wallace said: “I’m so pleased to have finished and over the moon with my time of 3.29.04. The Sense crew were great at cheering on the day, especially at mile 25. I wanted to give up at around mile 23 but knowing my family and friends were watching and the donations that had been made really kept me going to the end.” Hit film makers searching for Lincolnshire dog owners to cast on new TV programme Ever wanted to appear on the ‘silver screen’ – well here’s your big chance; if you have a pet pooch that is causing you problems. The film makers behind the Channel 4 programme ‘The Dog House’ are looking for Lincolnshire dog owners as they compile a brand new prime time TV series for Channel 4 called ‘The Dog Academy’. The programme will be all about misbehaving dogs and their owners and they are on the lookout for people who need help to overcome their dogs’ behavioural issues. The producers say: “We’re looking to hear from people who might be struggling with their dog’s behaviour and need help to overcome their dog’s issues. From small quirks to life impacting behaviour, we’ve assembled a team of the very best trainers in Britain to help owners transform their dogs once and for all. The series will be filmed later this year, but we’d love to start hearing from people now.’’ Those interested can contact the company at: dogacademy@fivemilefilms.co.uk. © stock.adobe.com/Halfpoint Lincoln mum completes Manchester Marathon a year after giving birth © stock.adobe.com/Chalabala 06-10.qxp_Layout 1 19/04/2022 13:55 Page 1New CEO for YMCA Humber YMCA Humber has appointed Kate Conway as its new Chief Executive Officer. A new report provides important new insights into the health risks that long-term residents using temporary housing on Lincolnshire’s East Coast may experience, with several indicators suggesting significant exposure to risk factors for Type 2 Diabetes. Researchers at the University of Lincoln, UK, conducted scoping work on Lincolnshire’s East Coast communities, which gave a broad overview of type 2 diabetes risk among ‘residents using temporary housing’ (RUTH). Global Professor in Rural Health and Social Care at Lincoln International Institute for Rural Health, University of Lincoln, Mark Gussy said: “This is the first study of its kind that has looked in detail at the health and wellbeing of caravan park residents on Lincolnshire’s East Coast. “We have been able to identify some important place-based influences on health and ill-health. This work will form the basis of our ongoing engagement with the communities on the East Coast.” Study highlights Lincolnshire’s Coastal temporary housing Connells Group Charity Golf Day raises nearly £4,000 for Mind Leading estate agency and property services provider Connells Group hosted a charity golf day on 7th April in aid of its charity partner, Mind. I would also like to thank everyone who attended and helped us to raise a brilliant total.” residents risk of Type 2 Diabetes 06-10.qxp_Layout 1 19/04/2022 13:55 Page 2Coronavirus testing sites close and free testing ends In line with the government’s latest guidance, all of Lincolnshire’s Covid PCR testing sites and mobile testing units have now closed. Free testing for the public finished at the end of March, as part of the Living with Covid plan which sets out the government’s strategy to live with and manage the virus. Most people ordering lateral flow tests for Covid-19 will now have to pay for them. Certain groups will still be eligible for free testing – NHS and care staff will continue to have access to free testing, as will people at risk of serious illness from Covid-19. Natalie Liddle, Acting Head of Service – Health Protection, said: “The testing sites have now closed in line with government policy, which is happening across the country. It coincides with the ending of free testing, except for certain critical groups. People with symptoms of a respiratory infection, including Covid-19, a high temperature or who feel unwell, are advised to stay at home and avoid contact with other people, until they feel well enough to resume normal activities.” latest news Lincolnshire set to welcome first Ukrainian evacuees The Government has advised the Lincolnshire Resettlement Partnership to anticipate guests being allocated to around 200 sponsors in the next couple of weeks. This is through phase one of the Homes for Ukraine scheme, following the approval of initial visa applications. Sponsorships are spread reasonably evenly across the districts of Lincolnshire, with between 25 and 35 per area initially. As more visas are approved, the number of hosted arrivals are anticipated to increase in the coming weeks. In advance of the arrivals, various checks are starting to be made by the local authorities to ensure the suitability of the accommodation for the imminent arrivals. Under the Homes for Ukraine scheme, people offer up space for up to six months and go on to independently make a direct link with a named guest. Sponsors and guests are required to find each other and make a match, perhaps through a relationship already in place, through friends, a charity or similar organisation. Either side can then make the necessary visa application, naming both parties, which triggers the sponsorship being agreed. Residents to remember ‘right thing, right bin’ for their first purple-lidded bins Many people have embraced the new separate paper and card purple-lidded collections and have asked lots of questions to ensure they are fully prepared for the roll out. Only dry and clean paper and cardboard should go in the new purple-lidded bin, for example frozen food boxes, newspapers, envelopes, magazines, junk mail and cardboard parcel packaging. They should all go in loose and not bagged. Bins containing anything other than paper and cardboard will not be collected. Cllr Owen Bierley, leader of West Lindsey District Council welcomes the new purple-lidded bin collections. He said: “I’d like to thank all West Lindsey residents for their continuous hard work ensuring that they are putting the right thing in the right bin. I understand that such a change is sometimes not easy. As separate paper and cardboard collections start, it is important to remember that the new scheme is a significant step forwards for the district, as we move towards increasing our recycling rate and reduce levels of non- recyclable waste.” © stock.adobe.com/rost9 © stock.adobe.com/SERHII BLIK 06-10.qxp_Layout 1 19/04/2022 13:55 Page 3Invest in your own Lincolnshire Holiday Home M1 M1 M1 M18 M18 M180 M180 A46 A46 A52 A52 A15 Barnsley 1hr 20mins Sheffield 1hr 15mins Derby 1hr 40mins Nottingham 1hr 30mins Lincoln 40mins Scunthorpe 30mins Doncaster 55mins Grimsby 20mins Drive Times Lincolnshire Wolds Mablethorpe Skegness Caistor Nettleton Park Nettleton Park is now fully open.
