This long-term perspective allows for a patient, considered approach to business, fostering stability and a sense of enduring quality. Personal service, often lacking in the impersonal churn of large corporations, is a hallmark of family businesses. They remember your name, your preferences, and your story. This investment in customer relationships creates a sense of belonging and fosters loyalty. In a world where online transactions often feel detached, the personal interaction offered by these businesses becomes a valuable commodity, building trust and lasting connections. Lincolnshire has a rich history of family businesses, each contributing to the unique character of its local communities. The region’s support for local producers and independent enterprises is evident in the bustling farmers’ markets, the thriving independent shops, and the vibrant local food scene. Ethical business practices are often central to family-owned companies. Lincoln Tea & Coffee Company, for instance, prioritises fair trade and sustainable sourcing. Their reputation is built on integrity, and they feel accountable to their community and employees. This commitment translates into responsible business practices, from supporting ethical supply chains to reducing their environmental footprint. Customers trust family businesses because they are seen as honest and reliable. This trust extends beyond the products or services themselves, reflecting shared values and belief in the owners’ integrity. In an era of increasing consumer awareness, this transparency and ethical approach become a significant competitive advantage. Family businesses play a significant role in the local economy. Pennells Garden Centres, with locations in Lincolnshire, employs local residents, supports local plant growers, and creates community spaces. Their reinvestment in the community contributes to its vitality and resilience, fostering a sense of local pride and ownership. They provide a valuable alternative to large, global chains, preserving the unique character of their region. Roxie’s Roots, another garden centre near Bourne, named their business after their daughter – highlighting the family connection. In the digital age, the human touch of a family business remains highly valued. They provide a connection to the past, a sense of continuity, and embody genuine craftsmanship. In a world increasingly dominated by automation and artificial intelligence, they remind us of the enduring power of human connection, the value of personal service, and the importance of supporting local communities. They are the threads that weave together the fabric of our society, reminding us that business can be both profitable and deeply meaningful. © stock.adobe.com/arthurhiddenGarden centres have always been a pride and joy of Lincolnshire and Roxie’s Roots is no exception. Founded by a family and named after their own daughter, the garden centre which opened only last year already boasts a loyal customer base. Sam and Kelly Matthews, the couple who founded Roxie’s Roots, already owns Timber Displays, a local manufacturer that produces benching displayed in garden centres, but said they wanted to open up a small garden centre as well, which they named after their seven year old daughter Roxie. “We wanted to set up a small garden centre with a wide range of plants at affordable prices, stocking a few necessities and supporting local suppliers,” said Kelly. “I like to plant my own flowers and now I plan to grow my own business.” Roxie’s Roots has already seen new growth in the form of the Coffee Shed, a small seating and dining area serving coffee, cakes and other drinks. The Coffee Shed recently received a 5-star rating on its first ever health and safety inspection. Lincolnshire is famous for the quality of its family-run garden centres and it can be difficult to break into such a competitive market, but Roxie’s Roots has already earned a lot of favour from locals discovering it for the first time. If you’d like to visit, Roxie’s Roots can be found just outside Bourne on Spalding Road and is open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 4pm. A change of scenery provides mental stimulation, boosts mood, and offers opportunities for social interaction. Day trips allow older adults to revisit familiar places, explore new surroundings, and enjoy nature or cultural activities at a relaxed pace. When organising a day trip for elderly individuals, careful planning is essential. Mobility is a key consideration - choose destinations that are wheelchair-accessible or have minimal walking involved. Check for available seating, toilets, and shaded areas. Travel should be comfortable, so opt for minibuses or taxis that offer easy access and enough space. Medical needs should also be taken into account. Bring any necessary medications, and ensure there are first aid supplies on hand. It's always a good idea to carry emergency contact information and be aware of any dietary restrictions if food is involved. Lincolnshire is full of fantastic spots for relaxed, elder- friendly outings. We have some fantastic seaside resorts with lovely beaches such as Skegness, Cleethorpes and Mablethorpe offering promenades, traditional fish and chips, and calming sea views.
