She won the Petplan Equine AdvancedMedium Restricted Championship, after a qualifyingcampaign that started last year at the Regional Area Festivalat Fry’s Equestrian in East Yorkshire.Riding her own Cyden Perplex, an eleven year oldgelding, Lara impressed the judges with the only score overthe 70% barrier and received a score of 71.47% to win theAdvanced Medium Restricted Championship from amongsixty horse and rider combinations.Lara bought Cyden Perplex as an untrained six year oldand has taken just five years to get him to this level. Laraexplains that she has had mixed feelings about her winningperformance: She says, “I had a brilliant lesson in themorning with dressage rider and trainer Mike Eilberg, whokindly stood in for his sister, my usual trainer Maria Eilberg. However, during my test I wondered whether Plex hadenough spark left to win, so I was absolutely delighted whenI received my score.” Lara works full time as Sales Manager for Cyden Homesand also runs and owns the Equestrian Coaching companyInspiring Minds. She says, “I would really like to thank mywonderful team at home, family and my sponsors, aswithout them an achievement like this just wouldn’t bepossible and thank you to Petplan Equine for giving me thisbrilliant championship opportunity.”Now in their thirteenth year, the Petplan Equine AreaFestivals give riders of all levels the opportunity toexperience the thrill of competing in true championshipconditions, in a relaxed and friendly environment. Morethan three thousand amateur dressage riders from all overthe UK competed at sixteen events across the country fromAugust to November last year, for a chance to qualify to ridein these prestigious finals.Isabella Von Mesterhazy, Head of Marketing at PetplanEquine, says, “The series has grown exponentially and nowmore than three thousand grass roots dressage riders each yearhave the chance to compete on the ‘big stage’. Not only havethe numbers grown, but so has the standard we see here at thefinals and we would like to congratulate Lara on her fantasticwin and wish her the very best of luck for the future.”Attention now turns to next year’s event, and the series ofqualifiers for the 2013 Petplan Equine Area Festivals kicks offthis summer, in preparation for the thirteenth annual finalswhich will be held alongside the British Dressage WinterChampionships at Hartpury College in April 2013. Meanwhile other nations will bevisiting the region, which will doubtless be of great benefitfor local riders who can take note of their skills. One example comes with the Rider DevelopmentProgramme that is being run by Carlton Horse Trials, animportant qualifier on the route to Burghley, and stablemanufacturer Scotts. Nick Turner, who has been heavilyinvolved in the Scotts Rider Development Programme sinceits inception, has offered two winners access to train withthe Brazilian 2012 eventing team, to whom he isPerformance Manager. Both Nick and Sara Tusting of Carlton Horse Trials wereresponsible for selecting six qualifying riders from a pool ofover eighty strong applicants. Riders Charlotte Stockdale,Kirsty Hayes, Sarah Hawkins, Callum Leary, Jodie O’Kaneand Huw Gordon were asked to explain why they should beselected to train with the Brazilian Team. They all put up astrong fight but ultimately only two riders could be takenforward, with Charlotte and Sarah shining through. Juliasays, “I’m sure they will both really step up and learn fromrubbing shoulders with the Brazilian team, who will beactually riding in the Olympics the same day as theDevelopment Riders compete at Carlton.”The lucky riders with a chance of takingtips from the Brazilian Olympic teamFOR A CARING ANDPROFESSIONAL APPROACHTO ALL YOUR VETERINARY NEEDS•Pre-purchase Examinations •Endoscopy•Stables & Theatre •Tendon Scanning•Reproductive Ultrasound •Mobile Xray Unit.Estate Office, Boston RdSPILSBYTel: 01790 752227Heath Road Trad. An hour’sactivity can burn a similar number ofcalories to that of a thirty minute jogor cycle ride. The movement of thehorse constantly affects a rider – andas the rider reacts to the horse’smovements to avoid losing balancethe core muscles of the trunk, pelvisand the adductor muscles of thethighs are continuously beingconditioned, much like a pilates oryoga session. Add to that the sense ofexhilaration, achievement andfreedom, and you will discover ridingacts as a great stressbuster. The lack of your own horse or ponyis no barrier to riding, as aprofessionally run riding school, suchas Caistor Equestrian Centre, willprovide instruction in a safeenvironment for the absolute novicethrough to experienced, competitiveriders. We invited TracyWhitfield, a highly qualified animal trainer, to come downand dispel the myths surrounding this art. Tracy explains that when she goes about training any animal,it’s important to not let words such as obedience and disciplinelead you. Dogs are much like humans, and their mentalprocesses often work in the same way. Imagine yourself in anoffice environment, if your boss offers you a good cash bonus ifyou work overtime then you’ll probably take advantage of it,but if he shouts at you and demands that you conform? Youmight comply a few times, out of fear for your job or such, butthe resentment and lack of trust will soon build up.“I try to avoid the word training, as it conjures bad images. Ilike to keep it fun, so it feels like a game for both the dog andthe owner. A dog is much more likely to learn if he enjoyswhat he’s doing, like any student does,” Tracy explains. “Likepeople, dogs are motivated by different things. Some aremotivated by food, and you can reward them with treats whenthey do well. Some couldn’t care less about food, but will lovea quick game of fetch as a reward. Or just loving attention.” One of the most common mistakes made by owners is lackof reinforcement. When Tracy finishes with a training class, beit a single session or a six class course, it’s important that theowners continue to train their dog. It’s a misconceptionthough that this needs to take forever, or be difficult. A goodlength of time to do some training is really no longer thanfive or six minutes. Keep it fresh and fun for both the ownerand the animal, and neither will get bored if you do this threeor four times a day, one of which can even be for theirbreakfast. Tracy herself has worked extensively with the RSPCA beforeshe opened her own business offering training andconsultancy for animals, and she has certainly seen a lot ofdifferent situations. “One thing I really want to push for,” shesays, “is consultancy with owners before they plan to becomean animal owner. Few people realise what they need, or whatthey can expect. And a quick session with myself can reallyclear a lot of confusion, and even save people grief and money. What’s more, it could also lower the number of animals beingabandoned or offered back to the RSPCA. There’s a lot ofbehaviours which are negative, and should be trained out of apuppy while they are in that impressionable stage that ownersdon’t train out of them. It’s because while they’re small, suchbehaviour is cute and adorable, but when they’re bigger andstronger, it can become dangerous. It’s not the dog’s fault, theywere always taught that it led to attention or a reward. A keyexample is jumping up at people - cute as a puppy, butdangerous to the elderly or children when the dog is bigger. “Training any animal is a lifetime commitment, it’s notsomething you can switch on or off, or attend one of my sixclass courses and consider it done. You need to put that littleeffort in after. But doing so will improve the welfare of yourselfand your animals.”Training need not be hardwork. Indeed, the current government target is for all new domesticbuildings to be carbon-neutral by 2016, and all non-domestic buildings by 2019 – and that’s going to need amajor effort in introducing renewable energy methods. In fact it’s been suggested that the UK requires a fasterrate of energy efficiency retrofits than any other country atany time. That was the view of Dr Ute Collier from theCommittee on Climate Change, which advises the UK onsetting climate targets, at a recent conference in Leeds.Indeed, Dr Collier pointed out that the UK government islegally obliged to achieve a 80% reduction in greenhouse gasemissions by 2050. 80% of buildings that will be in use in2050 have already been built, so as well as building newgreen buildings, the challenge is also to adapt existingbuildings to make them fit for purpose.Dr Collier said, “Low carbon options will add some coststo energy bills, in addition to market-led increases in fuelprices. If we take some measures to reduce energySolar panels at home and huge new biomass plants illustrate themassive potential of renewable energyDespite a cut in the Feed-InTariff, it’s still worth installingsolar panels. But if we take no measures, billswill go up.”Solar panels are becoming a more and more familiarsight around the county. Indeed, the increased interest ininstalling them is one reason why the Feed-In Tariffsystem, whereby you get paid for electricity you pass onto the national grid, has recently lowered its prices. Suchwas the take-up of the scheme that the governmentclaimed they simply didn’t have the cash to keep it goingat the current rate.Although the amount of money you’ll make from thescheme if you install solar panels has been reduced, itcertainly doesn’t mean it’s no longer worth doing. SinceApril 1st, the scheme has offered a payment of 21p/kwhfor domestic installations – guaranteed for 25 years, indexlinked and tax free. That means a solar energy system foryour home can easily pay for itself within about a decadeor so – especially as you’ll also be saving on your energyLINCOLNSHIRETODAY109FARM & COUNTRY LINK - RENEWABLE ENERGY110 bills and also making your house more attractive topotential buyers, should you ever wish to move.Although the pot for the Feed-In Tariff is a littlesmaller than it used to be, homeowners should soon alsobe able to benefit from the Renewable Heat Incentive.Unfortunately, since we last reported on this, theplanned start date has been pushed back yet again andit’s unlikely to come into force now for at least anotheryear. When it finally does, however, those who installrenewable heat systems such as solar thermal panels, heat pumps or a biomass boiler, should be looking at adividend of about £1400 a year.In the meantime, you can apply for the RenewableHeat Premium Payment, which provides a grant for thosewho install renewable heat initiatives before the newIncentive eventually comes into force.
