< Previous130 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYCARINGThe FosteringNetwork hasrecently revealedthe fact that achild comes intocare and needs afoster family every22 minutes acrossthe UK, so whatcould you do?The alarming figure highlights thegrowing pressure on the care system and thescale of the challenge facing fosteringservices already struggling with a shortage offoster carers.Last year, more than 24,000 children cameinto care and needed fostering, an increaseof 17% compared to 2008. And the totalnumber of children who are fostered hasrisen for five years in a row.Figures from Cafcass, the board that dealswith children and parents involved in courtcases, have shown a record number ofapplications for care orders in recentmonths in England, suggesting the pressureon foster care is set to continue unless morepeople come forward to foster. An estimated 8,750 new foster families areneeded across the UK in 2012 alone, andahead of this year’s Foster Care Fortnight, which starts Monday 14 May, the FosteringNetwork is urging more people to becomefoster carers.Without these extra families, too manychildren won’t get the right foster homefirst time. They end up living a long wayfrom family, friends and school, arerepeatedly moved around as fosteringrelationships break down, or even end up inresidential care when fostering has beenidentified as their best option. For example, Clare Marshall was in carefrom the age of two. After being movedaround more than 40 times, she lived in astable long-term foster home. She said: “Ihad some tough experiences at the start, butI think it gave me the determination, inspiration and ambition I needed.”Myfoster carer, who I now see as my mum, always instilled good values in me and she’swhy I’ve been successful and gone on touniversity. She’s encouraged me to go foreverything I want to achieve and has beenthe biggest inspiration in my life. RobertTapsfield, chief executive of the FosteringNetwork, said: More than 24,000 childrenwho came into care last year were fostered. That means a foster home has to be foundevery 22 minutes.“This figure highlights the overwhelmingneed for more people to come forward tofoster. With more foster families, children incare will have a better chance of finding thestability and security they need to go on andachieve their potential. Jim Bond, a fostercarer who looks after teenagers, said: “Nearly20 years ago I decided to give up a career inteaching to become a foster carer, and it isthe best decision I could have made.“I feel proud to have been able to make aCould you care more?Could you care more?130-131:Layout 1 11/5/12 10:24 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY131CARINGGREENACRESCAREHOMEAre you struggling to look after an elderly loved one?Greenacres care home in Caistor offers the following:Respite Care: • Holiday • Need a break • Illness • RecuperationDay Care: • From £25.00 Per day • All meals provided• We may be able to provide transport (subject to conditions) • Bath if required • Activities & EntertainmentLong or short term care:• Single rooms available • Fully trained caring staff• Activities & EntertainmentGreenacres Care Home Caring in the CommunityTel: 01472 851989difference to the lives of so many children and I wouldurge others to consider doing the same. So, this FosterCare Fortnight, why not find out more and see if you’vegot what it takes? For those new to fostering, many fearswill surely take hold, but it is important to rememberthat there is no perfect person fostering services arelooking for, whether you are single, co-habiting ormarried, as long as you can provide a loving and safehome for a child in need, that is all that initially counts.Matters such as sexuality, race and the like also do notmatter, indeed there is a call from those within the LGBTcommunity to step forward and apply. This is not due tofostering reaching what some charities have been quotedas saying is a “crisis point” but due to inclusion becomingmore accepted. Fostering is by no means an easy task to take on, manychildren will have come from homes marred with abuse, violence or worse, this is not just looking after children, itcan be dealing with physical and mental problems too. Itmay be a challenge, but most foster carers would alsoagree that it is a rewarding experience, knowing you areproviding a safe haven or a life previously not possible forsomeone vulnerable must mean so much.Even if you don’t end up taking any action beyondlooking into fostering as a result of Fostering Fortnight, atleast finding out more about this wonderful use of yourtime could be well worth it. Someone’s life could be madedecidedly better if you make the first step today. To find out more about fostering, visitwww.22minutes.org.ukLincolnshire County CouncilFostering & AdoptionTo mark the recent Foster CareFortnight, Lincolnshire foster carer Josays, “It’s very rewarding. To be able tosee a child develop and grow from thestable environment you have providedis quite simply amazing.”Jo has been fostering since 2003 andbecame a permanent foster carer inJanuary. Jo and her husband took in agirl of primary school age and, after awhile, realised they could provide amore permanent home for her. Jo says,“It’s such a strong bond we have with her we decided to see if wecould negotiate something more long-term as she was happy andsettled with us.”Permanent foster care is an option when adoption is notpossible, perhaps due to the child’s age or relationship with theirbirth family. Lincolnshire County Council is currently seekingmore permanent foster carers like Jo.
