And, with our countyoffering some of the best riding in theUK, as well as the luxury of the likes ofCadwell on our doorstep, it’s easy to seewhy. However, if you’ve never ridden beforeor if it’s been a few years since you rode, today’s motorbikes might seem daunting. The super-powered bikes available thesedays can seem like giants compared tothe scooters or smaller, lighter bikes youmight be used to.Thankfully, help is at hand. Althougholder riders don’t need to have arefresher or ‘confidence’ course by law, itmight be a good idea. With much moretraffic on the roads and with road deathsstill a major issue in the county it couldbe good to ease yourself back in.If you have any worries regarding alicense, it might be a good idea to seewhat your current license allows you todo. These days a basic CBT test, orCompulsory Basic Training is requiredbefore new riders go on the road. However, you don’t need to take one ifyou have a full licence from passing a fullmoped test after 1st December 1990 oralready have a motorcycle licence for onecategory and want to upgrade toanother. Once you’ve passed a CBT,you’ll need to take the full test withintwo years, otherwise you’ll have to passthe CBT again.Refresher courses can ease you gentlyback into riding, often working throughchecklists of various hazards, ridingsituations and manoeuvres. Often givenby a tutor who will provide you with atwo-way radio to give clear and concisetuition often just five to ten hours is allthat you’ll need. It’s worth mentioning toinsurers too as if you have taken safetyprecautions, they may have policies thatallow for small discounts on yourpremiums in the same way that Pass Plusdrivers of cars get.Be safeWhat ever you do, it’s important to feelas well as be safe on the roads. Some ofthese tips might seem obvious, butGetting backin the saddleOur county is famous for its motor-biking community so, if you took to two wheels in your youthand now want to get back in the saddle, or indeed, if you’ve never tried it, read on…simply reminding yourself before youhead out could save lives!Always make sure you’re…• Anticipating the actions of othermotorists• Making sure you are alert andobservant when encountering junctionsor roundabouts and dealing with areasfull of vulnerable road users like children, pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders.• Riding at a safe speed that meansyou can react and brake in time. Thisincludes adapting to road conditions likeslowing down for ice, wet roads and fog.• Overtaking safely, like can you seehazards like a bend or junction? Can youovertake without significant use of speedor swerving?• Taking that last lifesaving look overthe shoulder before any manoeuvres. Thisensures knowing where other road usersare and what they might be about toattempt.• Making sure you are seen, dippedheadlights even in the day can make sureyou are visible to all. 122-123:Layout 1 20/5/13 14:55 Page 1 cThis short course of 6 hours duration is designed for motorcycle enthusiasts to learn what immediate first aid you can perform cCourse Date/Time: please contact LIVES (see details below)please contact LIVES (see details below)please contact LIVES (see details below) cVenue: to be arranged via LIVES to suit youto be arranged via LIVES to suit youto be arranged via LIVES to suit you cCourse cost: £35 per person£35 per person£35 per person cTraining: delivered by LIVES predelivered by LIVES predelivered by LIVES pre---hospital care providershospital care providershospital care providers The Course comprises the following elementsThe Course comprises the following elementsThe Course comprises the following elements cScene Safety cRecognition and management of the unconscious casualty cRecognition and management of skeletal injury including safe removal of crash helmets cRecognition and management of trauma and blood loss including recognition and management of shock For more information contact LIVES at: Units 5-8, Birch Court, Spratt Close, Boston Road Industrial Estate, Horncastle Lincs LN9 6SB Tel: 01507 525999 Fax: 01507 524333 Email: kraywood@lives-responders.co.uk Web: www.lives.org.uk/corporate If you were there first … would you know what to do?? Jessica had to undergo a majoroperation to treat a serious twist and curve in her spine, a complicated process which could haveseen her permanently confined to a wheelchair. Happily the operation was a success and shemade a full recovery. Her spell in hospital convinced her to help other young people who have to live with seriesillness and conditions. Jess’ latest fundraising initiative was a fantastic ball at Jocastas in Lincolnto raise money for Scolio, which sends gifts to those who suffer from conditions includingscoliosis. The sheer amount of visitors toour county has steadily increased overthe last few years and indeed last yearsaw 369,934 visit in the 12 months up toApril last year, that’s compared with just336, 502 for the previous period. That’san increase of around 10%, but we’renot resting on our laurels, far from it. Lincoln Castle for example recordedan increase of 8,307 from 151,155 to159,462, currently undergoingrefurbishment, including a new vault toshowcase the Magna Carta to coincidewith the 800th anniversary of its signing.Once completed, admission to the castlegrounds will be free during the day, surely adding one of the most uniqueelements to a city already steeped inhistory. On-going restoration work at theCastle is also proving to be a coup for thecity’s offering and the contractors for thatwork are also due to start work onNewport’s Roman arch. The WRENHeritage Fund has granted City of LincolnCouncil around £60,000 to repair windand weather damage via a specialiststonemason Robert Woodhead Ltd. Peter Cox, Managing Director atWREN, says: “We believe it is veryimportant to maintain and protectimportant historical sites such as theLincoln Newport Roman Arch. IconicStructures like this are part of thecountry’s rich history and we must ensurethey remain intact for future generationsto understand and enjoy. “Not only does this care for heritagemean future generations can see andenjoy it, but it also means the city looksgreat when people visit. Accolades likethe one Steep Hill received in 2011 for‘Britain’s Best Place’ help cement thisbackground work by recognising thecity’s potential.Similar work is going on elsewhere inthe county to make sure visitor numbersare up and the money rolls right in weseem to heading in the right direction. Projects like Lincolnshire Heritage atRisk are making sure the more esotericareas of the county are being lookedafter. They are currently surveying thecounty’s heritage assets including historicbuildings, places of worship, archaeological sites and other area’s ofinterest to make sure the county knowswhat the state of play is for the future. Similarly events are being held all overthe area to encourage people to visitplaces that they might not have before,Louth’s Wolds Words Festival bringsliterature and comedy to the town and awhole host of activities to encourage fansof the written word to one of the county’sgems. Over in Caistor, the Wolds WalkingFestival, now an annual presence, bringsramblers and walkers from across thecountry to one of our natural assets too.Working together with businessesseems to be the best way to encouragemore money into the county andcollaboration is also playing a leadingrole. It seems to be paying off in terms ofvisitor numbers at least.Lincoln’s uniqueheritage is proving to bethe bedrock forincreasing visitornumbers to the county.Facelift forBUSINESS?Protecting heritage in our county is an important element of business. Afterall, the better our fantastic historical towns and landmarks are kept, the moretourism it attracts translating into much needed money for our economy.Lincoln Castle is currently beingrefurbished and when finished will befree to visit, surely a boon for the city’sand indeed the county’s localbusinesses in terms of visitor numbers.126-127:Layout 1 20/5/13 11:08 Page 1lll#Yjcide#Xd#j`D[[Z^[bfje][joekhXki_d[iicel_d]_dj^[h_]^jZ_h[Yj_ed5LINCOLNSHIRETODAY127BUSINESS LINCS.The objective of the survey was togather information on the views ofLincolnshire based businesses as to thegeneral economic climate, the prospectsrelevant to their business and issuesrelevant to them. From the feedback of many ofLincolnshire’s prime decision makers, therewere some encouraging findings in thesurvey. For example, a clear majorityexpect increases in turnover and just overhalf expect profits will increase in 2013,and approximately one in three appear tobe planning an increase in head count. Adrian Reynolds, Duncan & Toplis’Managing Director, says, “Perhaps the mosttelling funding of all is that 65.22% ofLincolnshire businesses who took part in thesurvey are more hopeful for the economicoutlook of their business in the comingtwelve months than the last. The samequestion in the 2012 survey received a figureof 51%, suggesting an overall improvementin the outlook for the county’s businesseswhich is cause for cautious optimism.”For a copy of the survey, visitwww.duntop.co.uk/lincolnshiresurvey2013The state of Lincolnshire businessDuncan & Toplis, in association with Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce, have completed andreleased their 2013 Lincolnshire Economic Survey.126-127:Layout 1 20/5/13 11:08 Page 2128 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYAssisted Living at Holderness Grange…Taking Care of EverythingTerms & conditions applyHolderness Grange is a superb lifestyle village offering first-class facilities set within wonderful surroundings. As you can see elsewhere in thesepages, a number of voluntaryorganisations in the county – Age UK,LACE Housing, Adults Supporting Adultsand the Lincolnshire Home ImprovementAgency among them – have beenworking together so that people whorequire support can create a suite ofoptions that best support their needs. The emphasis in every case is on dignityand bespoke care and means they don’thave to fit into a one size fits allapproach. It makes sense – you don’t expect athirty year old and a sixty year old tohave the same needs and desires, so whyshould a sixty year old and a ninety yearold be lumped under the same headingof “older people” and be required to fitinto prescribed requirements? Some willbe perfectly happy making use ofaccommodation while others remainfiercely independent and wish to remainin their own home for as long as possible.Organisations working together mean apot pourri of services can be offered tosuit all tastes. As well as the formal services that offerday-to-day care and long-term support, across Lincolnshire there are also anumber of informal schemes that canassist the most vulnerable members ofsociety in a small but often valuablefashion. One of the most intriguing is theMessage in a Bottle scheme which isbeing organised by the City of LincolnCouncil in conjunction with Kier andLincoln Lions and is aimed at helping theelderly and vulnerable in the city. The project works by providingvulnerable people with a small plasticbottle which is kept in their fridge inwhich they can set out details of medicalconditions, personal details and who tocontact in case of emergency. A sticker isthen placed on the back of the mainproperty door to let anyone coming tohelp in an emergency situation knowthey are part of the scheme. Anyonewanting to take part in the scheme willbe able to do so for free, and it isavailable to anyone who feels they couldbenefit from it.One aspect of this scheme that is likelyto be particularly appealing to some whoparticipate is its subtlety. Some olderpeople don’t wish to be seen as a specialcase and can sometimes be embarrassedabout what they see as excessive fuss, sothis approach offers dignity,John Bibby, Director of Housing and128-131:Layout 1 20/5/13 11:32 Page 2Next >
