< Previous140 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYJAZZJazz Vehicle have been entertainingLincolnshire audiences for nearly threedecades. Led by the tireless John Crouch, the band is made up of school pupilsaged between fourteen and nineteen andhave won numerous awards with theirown brand of big band jazz music. Lastyear they reached the Music For Youthfinal at the Royal Albert Hall, as has beenthe case on many previous occasions, andthey have performed for distinguishedaudiences across Lincolnshire and the restof the UK.Now the band’s members are enjoyingextra tuition from award-winning jazz starZoe Rahman. The Miles Ahead projectfrom EMJAZZ, who promote jazz in theEast Midlands, have arranged for Zoe tobecome artist in residence with JazzVehicle, passing on her skills andenthusiasm. She certainly has plenty toshare – she’s a highly acclaimed pianistwho has performed with many of theleading names in music and last year wonthe MOBO Award for Best Jazz Act.We were lucky enough to watch Zoeworking with the band at the TerryO’Toole Theatre in Lincoln recently andthe enthusiasm from Jazz Vehicle and Zoewas clearly apparent – even though it wasonly their fourth session together. Zoe hasfostered a spirit of improvisation andenergy that is helping the band reachnew heights.John tells us, “We’ve been supported bythe Lincolnshire Jazzpac for many years, but for Zoe to be with us for eighteenmonths is just incredible. The audience atour concerts expect certain standards andI’ve been trying to encourage the band toplay without the music in front of them soit frees up the performance. Getting rid ofthe stands and the chairs takes theperformances to a whole new level andZoe now has time to develop that withthe band. It’s something we were alreadydoing – learning music by ear – and Zoe’shelped us improve that still further. It’sbeen a real eye opener for the band and areally positive experience.“Jazz Vehicle is a big band and in thelast session she opened them up forindividual improvisation which took animmense amount of time, and I thinkeven Zoe was surprised because everyonewanted to have a go.”Zoe says, “The band are used tolearning by note so it’s been somethingnew to teach them by ear. I love tryingdifferent things with different musicians, seeing how people can cope. Jazz is anaural artform and that’s how peoplelearned music initially, which is somethingI’ve been keen to pass on, so whenthey’re on their own they can pick thingsup by ear themselves.“For me, jazz is about improvisation, it’sabout learning by ear and just enjoyingplaying. I was brought up playing classicalmusic and it’s a very different way ofplaying if you’re looking at a piece ofmusic, you’re using a different part of thebrain to when you learn things by ear.People think improvisation is a scary thingthat happens in dark basement jazz clubs, but everyone does it and I think JazzVehicle are more than capable of doing it.“There’s no hierarchy in jazz for me, andI know some people in the group havemore experience than others but I don’twant that to be a barrier. It’s not about mebeing a director and telling them all whatto do, it’s about finding out what they wantto do. I asked them all what they listenedto and it was a very eclectic selection butwe agreed on a piece they all enjoyed andwhich meant a lot to many of them.“Working with Jazz Vehicle has beenfantastic – they’re really great musiciansand it’s amazing they’ve been around forso long. John Crouch does an amazingjob.”How have the students taken to thenew approach? Lydia George, who playsthe trombone in Jazz Vehicle, says, “Forme especially it’s been quite challengingbecause improvisation and learning by earis new to me, but I’ve been getting usedto it.”Members of Jazz Vehicle are drawn fromschools around the county and astrombone player Elliot Crouch tells us, “It’sall about people’s dedication to commit totaking part in the group, and we all enjoyit. Having someone like Zoe around helpsus develop as musicians and gives us awider spectrum of influences.”Zoe will continue working with JazzVehicle for the next year or so and at theend of the project a special concert isbeing planned to showcase theirdevelopment. It’s well worth checking outJazz Vehicle if you get the chance – it’stestament to the dedication of John, Zoeand the members themselves that theirperformances are to a fantasticallyprofessional standard.Miles aheadLincolnshire’s highly acclaimed Jazz Vehicle is welcoming acclaimed jazz star Zoe Rahmanto help them reach new heights140-141:Layout 1 20/5/13 10:45 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY141JAZZAward-winning jazz pianistZoe Rahman is passing onher knowledge andenthusiasm to Jazz VehicleJohn Crouch has been the driving forcebehind Jazz Vehicle for nearly three decades140-141:Layout 1 20/5/13 10:46 Page 2Packingthe doggy bag142 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYPETS CORNERThese days there are a number of different options to suit yourdog which can be from hiring a house sitter to putting your doginto kennels. Kennels aren’t always suitable for every dog or for theowner’s piece of mind for when they are away. House sitters are when a person comes and lives in your homewhen you are away. Depending on the person or company, theywill be able to look after all your animals as well as watering plantsand providing a stocked fridge for your return. This is a great optionif you have a number of animals or if you have dogs withbehavioural or aggression issues. However, if you do decide to go down the kennels route youneed to make sure you pick the right kennels where you will feeltotally happy in the knowledge your dogs will be looked after to ahigh standard, while you are lying on a beach enjoying yourholiday! To help you make your choice, we’ve got a few pointers andquestions that will help you to pick the best kennels for you andyour dog’s needs.Always make sure the kennels are fully insured and hold thecorrect licences. Within Lincolnshire, kennels must hold an animalboarding licence which is provided by their local district councils.Don’t be worried about asking the kennels about whichqualifications their staff have and if they hold any dog handling ortraining certificates. Also, do staff hold an up to date Canine FirstAid certificate? If staff do have qualifications, ask what type ofcourses these are as it will give you a good indication if they usepositive training techniques rather than punishing ones. Ask what paperwork or documents you will need to bring withyou. This will give you an indication to make sure they arechecking that all the dogs coming into their kennels are fully andup to date with all their vaccinations. If your animal has a medical condition you need to be confidentthat kennels are experienced in administering medication and ifthey are able to keep to set times. Will your dog receive playtime during the day and do they geta walk? If so, how many or are they just allowed to simply runaround and play in the field. If the dog does receive a walk is itwith other dogs and what is the maximum number of dogsPackingthe doggy bagGetting ready to go on holiday? Haveyou thought about what you aregoing to do with your dog? SusieParker from Muddy Paws DogTraining urges you to consider yourfour-legged friends’ needs. 142-143:Layout 1 20/5/13 11:18 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY143PETS CORNERwalked at once? It’s great for your dog to have socialisation withothers, but you need to make sure that dogs’ personalities arelooked at before they are put together for walks. Are dogs and bitches walked together or do they have differentplaytime and walks? If your animal has aggression issues you needto make sure they are able to cope with them. It might be an ideato bring your dog up to the kennels a couple of times before you goon holiday so that staff can spend some time getting to know yourdog as well and your dog getting happy with the surroundings. Some kennels offer indoor and outdoor kennels, so if your dog isused to being in your house then you might want to use indoorkennels.Once you have chosen the kennels, we would start to thinkabout preparing your dog for going into them. It’s always a goodidea to leave your dog with some familiar toys and blankets thathave a familiar smell to help them settle in when they go on theirholidays. Don’t forget, your dog is going on holiday too, so make surethey have a great time too!Remember, when you go away, your dog goes on holiday too!PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/JULIE DESHAIESLINTRANTOTAL DOG TRANSPORT SYSTEM• Custom made transport system.• Lintran - the choice of theprofessional.• Training equipment & otherproducts available.Lintran, Brentwood House, Lincoln Road,Faldingworth, Market Rasen LN8 3SFTel: 01673 885959Email: enquiries@lintran.co.ukwww.lintran.co.ukDog WalkingPuppy Classes121 Training Adult ClassesHouse Singt: 07977 290920 / 01526 321226e: info@muddypawsdogtraining.uk.com w: www.muddypawsdogtraining.uk.comHome VisitsHeard it on theGrapevine?Send us details of yourforthcoming events or anyinteresting newsLincolnshire Today MagazineArmstrong House, Armstrong Street, Grimsby, N E Lincs DN31 2QE or email lincs-today@blmgroup.co.uk www.lincolnshiretoday.netGastronomicdelightsCoastalhikesHomes&GardensNauticalstyle£2.95MAY2013£2.95MAY2013CelebratingourwonderfulcoastCelebratingourwonderfulcoastGastronomicdelightsCoastalhikesHomes&GardensNauticalstyleTHEREGION’SFAVOURITECOUNTYMAGAZINETHEREGION’SFAVOURITECOUNTYMAGAZINEwww.blmgroup.co.ukwww.blmgroup.co.ukBLMGROUPGROUPBLMBLMGROUPGROUPBLMWWW.LINCOLNSHIRETODAY.NETWWW.LINCOLNSHIRETODAY.NET25 years young25 years youngCaring pet sitting servicesFrom doggy day care, to snake sitting, we do it all.Cared for in their own homes. Thismonth we talk to poet, author, blogger and all roundwordsmith Joel Stickley to find out what makes the county, for which he has been Poet Laureate, special for him. What do you love about Lincolnshire?I love the fact that Lincolnshire is full of hidden treasures. If you take the time to explore, it's never long before you stumble across somethingsurprising, eccentric or inspirational. Over the last two years as Lincolnshire's PoetLaureate, I've ended up finding plenty worth writing about, from steam engines tounexploded bombs to guerrilla knitting and everything in between. If you were to give advice to those who have never visited the countybefore, what would it be?Allow more time for driving than your sat-nav tells you to! Partly because you'llget stuck behind a tractor for thirty miles, but mostly because you're bound to getdistracted by something interesting or unusual along the way. Don't be afraid togo exploring. What’s the highlights of the year for you in the county? This year was the first Lincoln Inspired festival and I get the feeling it's going tobe something I look forward to every summer from now on. Loads of events foradults and children, writing workshops, fascinating talks, stunning performances ofall kinds - a definite winner!Where is the best night out in the county and why?I reckon that the best night out in the county is a night in. That's not to say thatthere isn't plenty of wonderful stuff going on out there, but it's hard to beat sittingin front of the fire with a glass of whiskey of an evening. Maybe I'm just getting old.How would you describe people from Lincolnshire?Proud, hard-working, creative and self-reliant. Maybe a little cynical, but that's nobad thing either.LincolnshireToday @lincstoday lincolnshiretoday.netStay in touch withLincolnshire TodayWe love to know what you think of Lincolnshire Today – so get in touch with us viaTwitter @lincstoday or search for us on Facebook.
