< Previous80 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYFOOD & DININGWe were fortunate enough to visit theDurham Ox recently and were hugelyimpressed. They sell themselves as a pub thatserves food, rather than a gastropub, whichmeans a relaxed and informal setting, locallybrewed guest ales and a concentrationon good quality traditional fareusing local produce. Food isserved at lunchtime and in theevening from Wednesday toSaturday, plus a Sundaycarvery, and every Friday freshGrimsby fish takes pride of placeon the menu. This summer tooyou can benefit from the 5cl caravansite and lovely sunny beer garden. When we visited, we made our selectionsfrom the regular menu, where for starters Iopted for the soup of the day, an excellenttomato and red pepper, while mycompanion chose the prawn cocktail, whichthey proclaimed to be as close to perfectionas they could imagine! For the main course, I opted for theDesperate Dan Cow Pie – filled with melt-in-the-mouth chunks of steak and Black SheepAle, served with huge hand-cut chips. Mycompanion opted for the steak, cookedexactly to their liking. These are fabulousexamples of the Durham Ox’s dedication tohearty, traditional fare cooked to the higheststandards. A selection from the mouth-watering dessert menu rounded off afabulous meal.As well as the main menu, somesizzling summer specials are on themenu in the warmer months. TheEarly Bird menu has returned bypopular demand on Wednesdayand Thursday, while Wednesdayoffers a gourmet burger dealand Thursday is steak night witha meal for two and a bottle ofhouse wine for just £22.Friday’s Captain’s Table menu isparticularly popular with fresh fish deliveredstraight from Grimsby Docks. Their famousbucket of boat trash – haddock, lemon sole, cod, salmon and tempura torpedo prawns, deep fried in bread crumbs and served withhand cut chips and salad garnish, is just£9.50 and there are many other fine fishdishes to choose from.Just a short distance from Horncastle, theDurham Ox must be the quintessentialLincolnshire pub – where the quality of thewelcome and atmosphere is matched by thehigh standards of the food and drink. The Durham OxIn the heart of the Lincolnshire Wolds, the Durham Ox in Thimbleby offerseverything you could possibly want from a traditional country pub and restaurant.Since a refurbishment last autumn, owners Vinnie and Angie Balderson provide afabulously warm welcome to go alongside the great food and great atmosphere.Friday’sCaptain’s Table menu is particularly popular with fresh fishdelivered straight from Grimsby DocksThe Durham Ox is on Thimbleby Hilland for more information, and to booka table, call 01507 527152 or visitwww.durhamoxpubthimbleby.co.uk.080:Layout 1 20/5/13 10:29 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY81FOOD & DININGSol and John Pickwell Nicolaou havebought their passion for food to the puband are renowned in the area for theirset course menu as well as their reliablebar menu. We paid them a visit to findout what culinary delights were on offerand we really weren’t disappointed. After being seated in their small, butwelcoming dining room, decorated inmodern yet traditional style we weremade to feel welcome from the start.Choosing options from the set menu, wewere really spoilt for choice. After muchdeliberation, we opted for a pressedham hock with a blue cheese croquette, brown bread, grapes, pickles and saladand a raviolo of Ricotta and spinach, served with pine nuts and rocket. Theham hock was an intense, herby take onthe traditional dish and the subtleflavours from the accompanyingingredients meant it was a real treat.Combining blue cheese with the grapechutney too was a mouth-wateringproposition. The raviolo was a satisfyinglyflavoursome starter too, freshly made andgenerously filled it certainly hit the spot. For the main course we chose a sweetpotato and saffron risotto with crab andclams which was packed with a wholesmorgasbord of tastes. From the subtleand fragrant saffron to the earthy sweetpotato the oceanic element shonethrough and made for a moreish dish, something rare when it comes to risotto.Too often risotto can cloy after a fewmouthfuls, but with this much variety itraised this dish to the next level. My dining partner’s Tuscan style beef, served with potato gnocci and rusticbread was a filling, hearty affair. Meat sotender it was falling apart gave it a beef-stew like consistency, but the spices usedmeant it tasted exotic. Every last sliver oftender beef was mopped up with thebread and the side plate of vegetablesprovided a fresh contrast to the heavy, yet delicious beef. The pub’s dessert menu changes on aregular basis, but we’d vouch for thepeanut butter panna cotta in a heartbeatagain. The ice cream provided thesweetness to the intensly nutty take onthe Italian classic and made for a uniqueand memorable end to the meal. Mydining partner’s chocolate fool was agenerous wine glass full of thick, indulgent chocolate mousse, toppedwith fresh strawberries and an explosiveelement included too in the form ofpopping candy! Head down to the King’s Head if youwant a welcoming venue that does foodwith style, whether you happen uponthe village via a walk in the wolds orplan to head there for an evening out, you’ll be wanting to head back rightaway, we certainly are!The King’s Head is at 11, Kingsway in Tealby near Market Rasen, LN8 3YA. With a history perhaps befitting of its location, it has Lincolnshire’soldest thatched pub roof, which dates back to around 1367 and certainly makes for a striking look.081:Layout 1 20/5/13 10:30 Page 182 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYFOOD & DININGSituated on Waltham’s main road,Fourteen is two Victorian houses knockedthrough into a wide, open and airy spacefull of contemporary style. Candles give itthat atmospheric feel and the central barwhich Sam and head chef Liam builtthemselves lend the restaurant the winebar status it has been granted the day wevisit.Sam’s thinking behind the food on offeris predominantly British but with an Italianor Oriental influence, made from localingredients which they are currentlysourcing from within a five to eight mileradius. “Everyone has been reallysupportive locally and we’ve got someexcellent suppliers on our doorstep,” saysSam. “With the ingredients and dishes weare serving we’re offering really goodvalue for money but of a certain qualityand I think we’re quite unique. I’ve justbeen on a course in order to learn how tomix cocktails, so we’re able tooffer diners somethingdifferent in that regard too.“We’ve also tried themednights like Italian and Spanishnights and we’ve even hadpeople come in and requestdishes they’ve had on those menusagain so we’ll most likely be doing somemore of those too.”Sampling their menu was therefore apleasure, first trying a starter of crabspring rolls with a mango and chilli salsawas a real treat. The crab was sumptuousand had a delayed chilli kick, combinedwith the oriental-style spring roll crustmade it a hot and satisfying start to themeal. A hint of fruit from the salsa madean excellent contrast too.We sample two main courses too, alamb rump vindaloo and a fillet of seabass. The vindaloo was nowhere near asshockingly hot as the namesuggests, instead it was asuggestion of heat from asmear of rich sauce with asucculent and juicy lambrump, rice and a singlefluffy potato. Theaccompanying minted peasamosa was also a greataddition and something we’d loveto have again. The sea bass waspleasingly delicate, sitting on top of apancake stuffed with king prawn ravioliand peas which in turn was given ashallow pool of crab seafood bisque, giving it a further oceanic feel that seabass has in droves. If you’re searching for somewhere doingfine, delicate yet satisfying food with alocal feel, Fourteen could be your bestbet. Packedwith history and charm, we pay the castle a visit to see what opulentwonders lay within.Surrounded by beautiful grounds, the drive into Cave Castle’s grounds are certainly breath-taking. Its tree-lined driveway gives way to a lake and the sight of the original turrets and stonewalls is certainly a view to wow those who have never visited. We were shown to our room in the extended part of the hotel and were pleased to find aspacious, well-appointed room with views across the surrounding countryside. East Yorkshire hassome amazing landscapes and Cave Castle takes up 150 acres of it, mainly parkland and meadowsthat are filled with the sights and sounds of nature. The hotel itself plays up to the castle idea in a tasteful way, suits of armour are propped up proudin the entrance and a theme that recurs is brown bears, several statues and carvings of which standdotted around the hotel. It certainly gives the place a pastoral and appealing feel and you’ll soonfeel well at home.We took dinner at the hotel’s restaurant where you can pore over both A La Carte and TableD’Hote menus that are filled to the brim with tempting dishes. We enjoyed starters of duck liverpate with chutney and rustic bread and a crab and lime dish that simply blew us away. For the main course we had a dish of pork served with apricots and black pudding along withseasonal vegetables. This was a revelation and probably the best reflection of the restaurant’soffering, subtle pork flavours chimed incredibly well with the sweetness of the apricot and theearthiness of the black pudding. My partner’s peppered tuna steak was also impressive, servedwith naturally sweet roasted pepper and with a chilli kick it was a fresh take on the fish done in acontemporary style.Desserts were a challenge to pick from, with blood orange tarte on offer among othertempting dishes, we eventually plumped for a dark chocolate and pistachio tart with icecream and a morello cherry crème brulee served with a filo parcel of cherries. Both disheswere a highlight, the morello cherries carried a rich, stunning alcohol hit as well asvariation thanks to the miniature filo parcel, but the real star was the pistachios in thetart. Packed to the edges with freshly-chopped pistachios, it was an aromatic as well asindulgent dessert we insist you try if you intend on a visit.Famous for its banqueting offering, it’s no surprise to find Cave Castle is a popularwedding venue and conferencing centre too. There’s also a health club on sitewhich includes a gym, pool, spa, sauna and steam rooms, so pampering is a realpossibility during your stay too. Already a lovely place to live, itsHigh Street has been transformed by pluckyvolunteers and several funding wins. We see what’swaking up the town Charles Dickens once called ‘thesleepiest in England’.Since entering the bidding process for the much-publicised PortasPilot funding in 2012, Market Rasen has experienced a period ofchange. The town’s High Street, although still harbouring someempty properties and areas that need improvement, has beentransformed. New businesses have sprouted where there were nonebefore, monthly markets have people flocking to the town and thereseems to be a buzz about the place. This is in no short thanks to the efforts of MR BIG, Market RasenBusiness Improvement Group, who were the team behind the initialsuccess of the Mary Portas Pilot fund win.
