< Previous140 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYdraws people there. Art can betherapeutic as well as rewarding, so whynot give it a go?Worried? Fret notBeing worried about the future ofcourse can be stressful, but there’s plentyof help out there. Allianz GlobalAssistance and Yecco recentlyinvestigated investigate attitudes towardscaring for an aging population and foundsome interesting results. As a new report by think tank IPPRreveal that the number of older peopleneeding care is expected to outstrip thenumber of family members able toprovide that care by 2017, 52% ofpeople in the survey were concernedabout the future care needs of elderlyparents or extended family, should theyneed home assistance. The biggest single concern for peoplesurveyed was the prospect of balancingwork and home pressures whileproviding care for elderly parents(26%). This was followed closely by thefinancial implications of caring for anelderly relative (20%) and a fear ofhaving little or no support from localauthorities (16%). A higher percentageof men than women were worriedabout balancing work and home lifeand the cost of care. Planning ahead is key to reducing thelogistical and financial pressures ofproviding care. 58% of those surveyedhadn’t talked with their immediate familymembers about what they would do inthe event of needing to provide care foran elderly relative. This is key in makingsure any concerns are allayed far beforethe issue actually crops up.It was also found only 15% of peoplewould turn to extended family membersfor help in caring for a relative. But old age need not be a lonely andworrisome time. It’s all about a positivemental attitude. Cats are oftenconsidered fiercely independent creatures, and indeed that is partof their appeal for many cat owners, but they too require love, especially when they’re younger. Indeed a huge number of straycats and kittens are rescued every month – indeed just across theborder, Yorkshire Cat Rescue report they took in 162 in the firstthree months of the year. One way in which the number of stray cats can be cut down isvia the fostering programme, which gives cats and kittens thechance to learn the kind of acceptable behaviour that will makethem a much loved pet.As Sam Davies of Yorkshire Cat Rescue points out, “Fostering isinvaluable. Many people assume that because a mum is friendly, her kittens will be too. Left to their own devices, kittens can all tooeasily become feral and shun human contact simply because theyhaven’t had the same upbringing as their mother. Right from thetime they are born, kittens need regular handling to bond withpeople rather than relying on one another for company.“As a foster carer you notice things that might not be picked upso quickly in a rescue setting, but that’s not the only reasonfostering is so important. One of the main purposes is to makesure the kittens are properly raised and socialised in a homeenvironment.” To this end, litters of feral kittens are usually split upbefore each individual kitten is sent to a foster home. While thismay seem harsh, the idea is that each kitten gets the undividedattention of their owner. After a spell of fostering, cats are much more likely to be able toenter the big world. A pregnant female cat could require fosteringfor herself and her subsequent litter for about fourteen weeks, while a six-week old kitten might only need help for a month tohelp them bond and get the skills they need to become appealingand affectionate pets, and be made available for adoption by apermanent, loving family. Many pets do go on to enjoy a loving relationship and becomean important part of the family, which means it can be particularlyheartbreaking if they get split up. Overexcited dogs can sometimesget separated from their owners and it’s not always obvious as towho they belong to. In an attempt to address this, It will be a legalrequirement for all dogs to be microchipped by 2016.Microchipping involves injecting a computerised capsule aroundFindingfour-leggedfriendsPets can offer plenty of companionshipand friendship – but they deserve someback as well. As Jerry Green DogRescue illustrate, a large number ofdogs don’t get the care they deserveand are looking for loving families.143-145:Layout 1 16/5/14 13:15 Page 2LINCOLNSHIRETODAY145PETS CORNERdigbyspetHome to HARVEY TROY’SNatural Dog FoodNutritionally Trained StaffDog Weigh ClinicSmall Animal Holiday BoardingStockists ofthe size of a grain of riceunder the skin in aquick and virtuallypainless procedure. The number the chipcontains is unique tothe animal and willcontain its medicalhistory and owner’sdetails. Theevent was also attended by Police Community Support Officers toremind everyone of the best ways to look after their dogs withoutother people being inconvenienced. Those with pets will know all about the companionship they canoffer, so it’s well worth taking advantage of the various schemesand organisations around Lincolnshire that can offer advice andguidance to make sure as many people can enjoy the fun ofowning pets as possible.Last monththe City of LincolnCouncil’s NeighbourhoodTeam for the south invitedthe city’s dog owners toget their petsmicrochipped andenjoy a freehealth check143-145:Layout 1 16/5/14 13:15 Page 3146 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYHorrible Histories - Barmy Britain Part 2 28 JulyCOMING SOONAT THE BATHS HALL SCUNTHORPETICKETS ON SALE NOWwww.scunthorpetheatres.co.uk0844 854 2776In person at The Baths Hall and The Plowright Theatre Box OfficesRoyal Philharmonic Orchestra14 SeptemberSurfin’ USA - A Tribute to the Beach Boys 24 JulyThe Drifters 13 SeptemberAngelina Ballerina11-13 JulyJasper Carrot 5 SeptemberMercury 28 JuneManaged by SMG In Partnership with North Lincolnshire Council146-151:Layout 1 19/5/14 09:58 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY147GainsboroughThursday 26th JuneThe Trials of Oscar Wilde, Trinity Arts CentreEuropean Arts Company returns to Trinity Arts Centrewith a dramatisation of the libel and criminal trials of Wilde. The play is written by Merlin Holland, who is Oscar Wilde’sgrandson.
