< Previous90 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYEDUCATIONexperience life in a business environment, understanding not only the level of workthey need to put in, but also thedifficulties that managers face in business. Gary Sleight, from the Priory AcademyLSST says; “Young Enterprise is a fantasticopportunity for students. They learn andapply skills that they cannot gain fromclassroom teaching, such as beingentrepreneurial, learning from poordecisions and networking withbusinesses. But more than that, as ateacher, you can truly see the studentsgrow in confidence as they workthrough the programme, frommaking their first sale at a trade fair,to closing deals with real businessesand to presenting to a hall full ofbusiness experts.”Few of the above skills are activelytaught in classrooms, from customerservice, through to decision makingand management, and even directsales experience. Yet each of theseskillsets lay within some of the mostlucrative and available work on themarket at this time – and might eveninfluence the candidates to start theirown business in the future. It’s not just office jobs that schools areoffering extra-curricular activities towardshowever, take for instance the AstellasInnovation Challenge that took place atthe end of last year, which saw twoLincolnshire schools reaching the finals. This challenge focused more on scienceand technology, asking the students todesign an app that could functionally aidin promoting wellbeing and health acrossthe nation. With mobile apps becomingan increasingly large market forbusinesses, experience in this sectorprovides a real competitive edge for thestudents. And though neither team wascrowned victorious, the experience theygained could be much more valuablethan the actual prize. These activities are commonly run by anumber of schools, as the Governmentare actively promoting STEM (Science,Technology, Engineering andMathematics) subjects. In many caseswhat keeps students from takingadvantage of them is their nature asextra-curricular activities, andstudents not wishing to lose their freetime outside of school. Ultimately it isthe responsibility of parents toexplain the various advantages ofthese events and opportunities, andsee if they can convince their childrento take part. What is for certain is theadvantages it will give to thoseteenagers as they move away fromschool, and towards the rest of theirlives. But how does one figure out what’s bestfor the animals? Whatever choice is made the biggest problem the animal isgoing to face is that of separation anxiety. It’s commonlythought that this is a condition only experienced by dogs, butrecent research has suggested that our feline friends alsoexperience this anxiety, but that they show it insubtly different ways. In short, separation anxiety is a state ofanxious fear that a pet goes through when they are separatedfrom their owner, or even a fellow pet. Some animals handlebeing apart from their owners for a few hours without toomuch trouble, while others can panic as soon as the door isclosed. But whatever camp they belong to, chances are thatseparation anxiety is going to set in if you’re going on holidayfor a week or more. One of the advantages of hiring a pet sitter, or having afamily member look after the pets in your home is that ofcomfortable and familiar surroundings. Your house will likely bemost of a pet’s world to them, and suddenly moving them to anew location for a long period of time will only increase theirstress and could lead to them putting themselves at risk tryingto explore their new surroundings, or find you. In an idealworld a close family member could be asked to babysit theanimal by staying at your property for the duration of theholiday. This might be possible with younger, unattachedfamily members, but for those who have their own families, itmight be more realistic for the pet to be kept at their house. In these circumstances it’s often best to take your dog or catto their house a couple of times prior to theAWAYforSUMMERGoing away for a holiday is an excitingtime, but it’s worth taking a few momentsto think of those left behind.PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/OLIMPIK092-093_Layout 1 22/05/2015 10:35 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY93PETS CORNERUNIT 14BEAUBRIDGE BUSINESS PARKHEATH ROAD SKEGNESSPE25 3ST01754 611811Pets & Aquaticswww.digbys.org.uk10%offwith this advertOffer endsAugust 31stSunday 12th July - North LincolnshireSunday 16th August - South LincolnshireFurther info atwww.jerrygreendogs.org.ukAdmission:£1.00per adultUnder 16sFREEIS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE ITS2015Summer ShowsAgilty DemonstrationsFun Dog ShowAssorted StallsRescue Dog WalkaboutKid’s Activity ZoneAgilty DemonstrationsFun Dog ShowAssorted StallsRescue Dog WalkaboutKid’s Activity ZoneCharity Number1155042tropical - marine - coldwater - pondVictorAquaticsOur outdoor pond section is now openSelling pond fish, plants, pumps, food & moreOpening TimesMonday: 10am - 7.30pmTuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday: 10am - 5.30pmSunday: 10am - 3pm185 Victor Street, Grimsby DN32 7QBT: 01472 358698 - www.victoraquatics.co.ukday you leave. So that they can explore and get used to thelocation, and also the people who live there. This way they areless likely to panic when they are kept there for a while, whichwill also reduce your family’s frustrations, as dogs and cats whosuffer too much stress might foul their surroundings. It’s worth keeping in mind how much energy your pet has aswell, something which is going to be much more importantwith dogs. Is the dog energetic, and if so, how much do younormally walk it? A dog which is walked for an hour every dayis not going to be satisfied with an elderly couple walking it forfifteen minutes, and will likely vent that excess energy in thehouse. In fact, as with humans, one of the best ways to ventstress is through exercise – so increasing the walking time willhelp the dog settle. This might be a tough order if they areroutinely walked an hour a day, but for smaller dogs whichmight only normally have 15 minutes, then giving them 30-45will really relax them. If you don’t have the option of someone looking after yourpets however, then leaving your pet at a boarding kennel, orpet hotel, is going to be the only option. While pets left at suchplaces likely won’t receive the same level of individual attentionand care that those looked after by family would. It’s worth keeping in mind that the peopleemployed at such places are often moreknowledgeable in pet management than family areas well, and as such, pets are much more likely tobe safe at such places. Ultimately pets are unlikely to be happy to beleft behind, but what you should make sure of, isthat they will be safe when you return. In the endthat is what will make them truly happy. It’s important however, that you areaware what options are available, andwhat they entail. The most common wish is for a personperson to look after themselves. It’s important therefore to catalogueeach task that might become moredifficult with age, and what steps onecan take to fix them. Perhaps the mostobvious problem is that of staircases, particularly if they are used commonly.Thankfully when it comes to traversingthe staircase, there is always the clearoption of a stairlift to fall back on. Thesecan be relatively inexpensive to haveinstalled, but will often require bringingin a professional to look at your housebeforehand, no two sets of stairs are thesame after all, and the task really needsto be done safely. While certain conditions aregoing to require more specific care, suchas those suffering with Dementia, it’s stillpossible to maintain independence andlive in your own home. What must often happen, is a period ofadapting the home, and yourself, toaccommodate your needs – as well aswhat needs you might have later on.Simple tasks can become more difficult astime goes on, and taking steps to makethem easier sooner, rather than later, canprevent not only potential injury but keepmental health strong by empowering a094-100_Layout 1 18/05/2015 12:23 Page 2Call today for a friendly chat with Maria, Jane or Helen01482 896980Drapers Lane, Hedon, East Yorkshire HU12 8FJwww.holdernessgrange.co.uktodayLive forHOLDERNESS GRANGE LIFESTYLE VILLAGE2 bed apartments from only£70,000On Shared Ownershipwith Assisted Living atHolderness GrangeTerms and conditions apply.Holderness Grange is a superb lifestyle village offering first-class Country Club facilities set within wonderful surroundings. As well as the freedom of your own stunning 2-bed apartment, youcan further enhance your independence with our Assisted Livingpackages. Whether it’s family, a visitingcarer, or a door-to-door salesperson, constantly being forced to get up andmake one’s way to the door can easilywear a person out. Intercom systems, particularly if you can have some form ofremote entry lock in place, can enable aperson to at least determine who iscalling before having to get up. Trustedfamily can let themselves in, as can acare-worker, but an intercom can saveeffort when it comes to unsolicited orunwanted guests. Bathing can be another difficult task asa person gets older. Getting into and outof a bath can be an inconvenient enoughtask whatever your age, and the matter isonly made worse if the floor is wet orslippy. But for a person with more brittlebones and slower reflexes, even the actof taking a bath can be fraught with risk. This is another aspect however for whichthere are various solutions. With a widerange of mobility baths and showersavailable on the market, many of whichinclude a door which opens to allow aperson to simply `walk into` their bath, rather than climb in. Changes such as these can be easilymade in a home and can offer a personindependence as well as peace of mind. But many people shy away fromconsidering these problems, often due topride or a feeling of embarrassment atconsidering their bodies getting weaker. What is important however is toremember that such conditions arenatural as a person grows older, and likeany problem, ignoring it for longer onlymakes it worse. It might come to pass that as timecontinues, a person’s requirements mightchange, particularly when it comes toillnesses or disease, or an elderlyindividual who either has little family, orthat family lives far away. Accepting acarer into the home, even if it is just apart-time care worker might become anecessity. The types of care availablemight include help getting in and out ofbed, bathing, preparing meals, taking aperson out shopping or simply cleaningthe house. These services are often provided by alocal council, although they do not comeat no cost. Financial help might beavailable given your circumstances, though that can often depend on yoursituation, including what finances youalready have available. As such, it’s worthcontacting a local council and enquiringfurther. Many however, look to reducetheir costs by down-sizing their home.Selling their existing property andmoving to a new one that is smaller insize and contains less rooms. While this option can be good on the financial side of thingshowever, it’s worth doing some research into the new location.Does it have good access to shopping centres, how safe is thearea, does it still enable the tenant to continue any hobbies theymight have? Is it closer to your existing family? It’s important toremember that one should look to be happy as well as safe in anew home, so if golf is your hobby, then why not look for asmaller home near a golf course? It might be however, that a person feels they are unable to livein their home any longer. Be it due to their health, the difficulty orsimply the lack of interaction. As such, the next option is oftenlooking at care homes themselves. Such a decision might besuggested by others, due to a trip or fall at home, but it’s worthkeeping in mind that the final decision should ultimately be theperson making the move. Is there a good reason for going intofull-time care? The only two reasons one should accept is thatthere is a risk to your health of staying at home, or that yougenuinely want to make the move, be it for company, moreactivities or simply a more relaxed atmosphere. A person shouldnever feel forced to go into care, as that attitude will simplyensure the experience is not enjoyable. Thankfully Lincolnshire has a wide variety of care homes, andbecause of the pleasant countryside surroundings , they oftenhave more space and fresh air than many do in other regions. There are more types of cares homes than many immediately100 ÁPHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/LISA S.094-100_Layout 1 18/05/2015 12:23 Page 6Next >
