Which oneis ultimately chosen should depend onwhat is needed. As always good mood and happinesscan be as good for a person’s health asmedicine, so giving independencewherever possible is preferred. Care froma care home can be as little aspreparation of meals and someone to talkto on a regular basis, or it can be asintensive as medical treatment andbathing. It’s therefore necessary to visitand inspect a care home before decidingto go with it, and making sure the tenantis happy with what they offer. Many elderly people seek to bolster theinteraction they receive by taking onpets, and the health benefits of a cat or adog have been well-documented. Beingforced to give up apet to move intocare can be adevastatingprospect, so itwould be better tospend some timelooking for a carehome which allowspets. It might alsobe worth asking tospeak to someother residents to get a more unbiasedopinion on how they feel. At the veryleast look to see if they are acting happywith their home. Beyond that, ask aboutthe facilities they have available, whatthey can offer in the case of a medicalemergency, but also what recreationalactivities are available for the guests. Andthen ask the tenant if they would beinterested in those activities. It’s notmuch use being impressed by a carehome’s Bowls green if the family memberdoesn’t like the sport. Ultimately, it needs to be kept in mindthat the change is not only going to befor the safety and security of thoseinvolved, but also for their happiness. And as such they need to be consulted ateach stage to ensure they are simply notagreeing in efforts to not seem a botherto their family. When it comes to thefuture of loved ones however, no onewants to take shortcuts. However manually forming, filling and sealingthese boxes was a laborious and time consuming task.”Consequently Endoline installed their fully automatic 221case erector which has an integrated dual opposingvacuum technology which uses two vacuum systems forconsistent, positive opening of the case.Ian Bennett says, “The line consistently producesaccurately sealed boxes and requires very little manualoperation. While we have increased our output capabilitiesEndoline have simplified a previously lengthy task. Ourteam have found the line extremely easy to use and it hasmeant that fewer are needed to man the line resulting in amore efficient production”. Presented for the second year, the IMMAs recognise the best new farmequipment on the market and aim toreward companies who have producedmachines that show innovation, effectiveness and value. The awards aregiven out in the categories of cultivationsequipment, harvest machinery, sprayersand tractors, each judged by experts intheir field. The awards last year illustrated thehuge innovation that exists in theindustry. The winning tractor, forexample, was by John Deere, whoseDirect Drive transmission employsFormula 1 technology on its 6R tractorrange – helping to combine themaximum productivity and fuel efficiencyfor tasks that need continuous power. Asthe judges noted, the potential forgreater efficiency and lower fuel use istherefore very great. One sector that has undergone a hugechange in recent years is that of sprayers.New technology was very much in107 ÁCereals 2015 is one of the leading events ofthe arable sector and is held at BoothbyGraffoe on 10th and 11th JuneCEREALSUCCESSLincolnshire’s huge agricultural heritage is still vitallyimportant to the region’s prosperity104-108_Layout 1 18/05/2015 12:26 Page 2Range RoverAll models inc EvoqueDiscoveryFreelanderDefender All the parts and accessories you will ever needFree CataloguesParts service for Triumph, MG Rover and Jaguar also availablefrom 1998 to 2011Visit our website for prices and availability:www.rimmerbros.co.uktel:01522 568000fax:01522 567600email:sales@rimmerbros.co.ukTriumph House, Sleaford Road, Bracebridge Heath, Lincoln, LN4 2NA. The sprayer identifiesand targets weeds for treatment with ajet of weedkiller while avoiding contactwith the crop. This allows extremely lowherbicide rates and chemical usage isoften less than 1% of the normal overallrate. The runner-up, meanwhile, wasHouseham Merlin’s self-propelled sprayerwhich integrates their Fieldmaster GPSfield mapping system into a TotalMachine Control system to maximiseoperator productivity and efficiency.Efficiency is certainly a major factor, asBen Magri, spray application specialist atSyngenta, who are supporting the Spraysand Sprayers Arena at Cereals, points out.Ben says, “Given current low cereal andoilseed prices, spray costs are comingunder ever-greater scrutiny. This, coupledwith increasing resistance pressure andtightening environmental legislation, means spray application technology hasnever been more important. It’s for thesereasons that Syngenta continually investsin spray application development andinnovation, including new products andnozzles.”Among the new sprayingdevelopments on display at Cereals isHorsch’s new PT280 self-propelledsprayer, which will be making its firstappearance. A 285hp/210 KW Mercedesengine that meets Tier 4 requirementsprovides a 15hp power increase overtheir previous sprayer, and the power istransmitted via a hydrostatically steplesshydroshift gear unit and mechanical axisdrive for good traction in hilly terrain. The advanced BoomControl Pro systemuses two fast acting air rams to deliververy smooth boom movement, whilegyros and boom-mounted sensors feeddata back to a proportional controlsystem that counteracts virtually all yawand roll. This allows the boom to be keptvery close to the target area even at highspeeds.Sprayers are also being used to controlthe spread of blackgrass which can be amajor problem for farm businesses.Increased demand for Avadex granuleapplicators to control blackgrass hasresulted in the launch of the HorstineCascade which will also be on display atCereals. Application accuracy across thefull working width of the boom isguaranteed using four applicationsections, each with hydraulically-drivenmetering and an individual meteringrotor on each distribution outlet.Distribution outlets are spaced 1m apartallowing precise application of productsin farming systems up to 40m in width. The problem of blackgrass washighlighted at the recent Farming in theFuture seminars which took place inWoodhall Spa and Market Rasen recently.Co-hosted by Nicholsons CharteredAccountants, the headline speaker wasAllan Wilkinson, the UK Head ofAgriculture for HSBC. His main message108 ÁOne sector that hasundergone a huge change inrecent years is that ofsprayers, as will be illustratedat Cereals104-108_Layout 1 18/05/2015 12:26 Page 4108 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYFARM & COUNTRY LINK - MANAGEMENT & MACHINERYwas that volatility is here to stay inagriculture and farmers need to get usedto it by cutting their costs, enabling themto save and invest in the good times sothat they have a cushion when marketsgo against them. The market foragriculture is global, so it’s emphasisedthat farmers need to work together moreeffectively where possible in order tomaintain their profitability. As the seminars pointed out, there aremajor changes that farm managers willneed to bear in mind. Nick Sharpe ofPerkins George Mawer fleshed out thenew Basic Payment Scheme rules, whichcame into effect in January, warning ofthe necessity of making sure the claimwas correct, but not to expect the BPSpayment in early December, as hasbecome the norm with the Single FarmPayment scheme. The seminar also featured a look atupcoming rules and costs of Real TimeInformation and Auto-Enrolment, as well assome new tax traps to be aware of in thecapital gains tax and inheritance tax arena. The main message was to take advice andplan early where possible. There was aspecial focus on the tax reliefs available onplant and machinery such as tractors, combines, and solar panels, as well asensuring that the farm was structured inthe right way to ensure tax liabilities areminimised as much as possible. These changes may prove challengingfor some of our county’s farmers, butthere are opportunities to gain fundingand support to allow businesses to grow.Farmers in Greater Lincolnshire can nowapply for Water Capital Grants to helpthem protect the environment and reducewater pollution. These grants will fundnew projects to reduce the impact thatagriculture can have on water quality. They follow on from the recently launchedWoodland Capital Grants where farmers, land managers and foresters can apply forfurther grants worth a total of £4 millionto create new woodland, protect ourexisting forests and restore tree health. These make up the first phase of theCountryside Stewardship Scheme. Set tobe rolled out in full later in the summer,Countryside Stewardship will commitaround £900 million to benefiting theenvironment over the next six years. Thiswill help farmers and land managersdevelop environmentally friendlytechniques and adopt initiatives such asrestoring hedges and improving waterquality. The Greater Lincolnshire LEP hasmade agri-food one of its priority sectorsand their aim is for the county’s farmingindustry to be the best in the world byenabling the sector to reach its fullpotential. The food sector is of enormousimportance to Greater Lincolnshire – it’sthe third biggest sector and, as the LEPpoints out, it contributes £2.5 billionevery year to the area’s economy. Theirvision is to double its economic value by2030, and through a host of support andfunding opportunities, and the skills offarm managers in locating opportunities, the possibility of this being achieved looksvery likely.PHOTO COURTESY CEREALS 2015DIESEL ENGINES &GENERATING SETSDiesel Engine and Generator specialistsWelding, Machining and FabricationWorldwide installation and service.NORTH LINCS ENGINEERING LTDGRIMOLDBY, LOUTH, LINCOLNSHIRE LN11 8HETel: (01507) 328787 Fax: (01507) 329306www.northlincseng.co.uk104-108_Layout 1 18/05/2015 12:26 Page 5LINCOLNSHIRETODAY109FARM & COUNTRY LINK - SHOW GUIDEThe main attraction is always theLincolnshire Show, which takes place on24th and 25th June, but there’s loadsmore besides, all of which have a uniqueand very special atmosphere.Lincolnshire Today is certainly lookingforward to visiting the Lincolnshire Show!As usual, we’ll be welcoming guests toour marquee where there’ll be plenty ofentertainment.
