These have been with us sincethe 1960s, but nothing comes close tothe latest generation John Cooper Works(JCW) version. The BMW owned JCW performance-brand has produced the most focusedand hard-core versions of the legendarycar. And now there’s a spanking newmodel with some serious clout under thebonnet.The very latest generation MINI JohnCooper Works is the most potentproduction MINI ever known. It has a2.0-litre four-cylinder turbochargedengine crammed into it, but extensiveinternal tampering has upped powerfrom 189bhp to 228bhp. That’s a 20bhphike over the outgoing car and, as arecent road test on Lincolns A and Broads proves to yours truly, a moreexhilarating ride would be hard to find. On the outside, the MINI is certainlyone of the most attention-grabbingmodels to come from the Oxford-oriented brand. A crowd of vents, beefyarches and a sports exhaust thatguarantees you won’t go muddling upyour Minis .The cabin of the JCW is an event initself. A mix of Alcantara and leatherbucket seats look and feel great andyou’ve just got to try the ambientlighting which illuminates the dash anddoor trims in a choice of colours, or canbe set to meld between the variouscolours. A quick flick of the pulsating starterbutton brings the slumbering beastawake with a snarl and, on the move, thenew MINI feels every bit as quick as thefigures suggest. The performance boost is immediatelynoticeable, with those extra horsesproviding fantastic low-down pull. But,it’s not all about power as the JCW Minihas three settings: sport (which we love)standard (which, as you’d expect, is lessdramatic) and green (presumably, forwhen you’re guilt tripping about theozone layer) The six-speed dual-clutch Powershiftauto in our test car is loads more efficient -emitting 133g/km of CO2 as opposed tothe manual’s 155g/km. And, if you leave itin auto shifts are smooth as silk, butmanual mode gives you full control and itwill run to the red line if you get lazychanging cogs. Upshifts are mega-quickand the exhaust will get very vocal. Evenif you find yourself out of gear, the ever-present groundswell of torque can coverup any driver boo-boos, with 50-75mphin fifth gear taking just 5.6 seconds.Performance wise the 0 - 60mph sprintof 6 seconds, and top speed of 153mph,meaning the JCW is the briskest MINIever.All considered, yes the MINI JCW is anoutstanding drive, but it isn’t as loutish asits performance might imply. Engine noise is almost non-existent in petrol models and barelyperceptible in diesel models.You can choose between an eight-speed auto ‘box or a six-speed manual gearbox. But the automaticis the sweetest. The cogs feel perfectlyharmonised with the engine’s powerband and changes are quick. It alsocomes with paddles that allow for swiftmanual changes on the odd instance thatthe gearbox doesn’t act as promptly asyou would like. Of the petrol engines – all of which getthe automatic gearbox – it’s the 237hpfour-cylinder 2.0-litre lump that’s thebest. It feels rapid, as well as beingeffortless and refined in its operation. Itskyrockets from 0-62mph in 6.9 secondsand tops out at 155mph, returningaround 37mpg.The XE is remarkably relaxing andredfines luxury .
