It worked too. Most journalistsseemed taken aback when encouraged tomanoeuvre up a near-vertical ramp intothe 747. No need for any worries, though, it was child’s play for the four-wheel-drive luxury speed-monster to scalethe equivalent of a three-story building.Aesthetically, the Sport Utility Vehiclehas a more self-assured exterior and lavishinterior than the outgoing Range RoverSport. It is also more flexible as it nowcomes with the option of carrying sevenpeople. The comfy cabin mixes style andsumptuousness with elegant lines, topquality materials and spoonfuls of sportingcharacter. The athletic air of the car’scocoon is also reflected in the smaller, thicker steering wheel, higher centreconsole, configurable mood lighting andgenerous seat bolsters. The Range Rover Sport’s high drivingposition instils a sense of self-assuranceand the steering feels light anddirect. Maximum ground clearancehas been increased and the improvedair suspension system automaticallyvaries between two ride heights, whileLand Rover’s Terrain Response 2 gadgetryintuitively chooses the most appropriateprogramme for whatever the wheels aredriving over. The SUV available on our media driveday was the first Land Rover vehicle towear the new high-performance SVRbadge from the company’s ‘Special VehicleOperations’ division. As a matter of fact, the Range Rover Sport SVR is the mostdynamically focused vehicle Land Roverhas ever produced. The goliath is bonkers-quick, because it ispowered by an uprated version of LandRover’s 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine, which has been tuned to deliver 550 PS – a40 PS increase over the existing V8Supercharged derivative. Developing 680Nm, it surges from a standstill to 62 mph injust 4.7 seconds and it will go on to achievea top speed of 162 mph. It sounds awe-inspiring – with the throbbingsupercharged V8 engine releasing adelightful roar when you give it some welly. Furthermore, such is the Range RoverSport SVR’s sporting prowess it has lappedthe famous Nordschleife circuit at theNürburgring in Germany in 8 minutes 14seconds. This makes it the fastestproduction SUV around the Nürburgring. The impressive feat was carried out by aLand Rover driver testing a standardproduction example of the potent newperformance flagship. On the downside it officially getsthrough a gallon of unleaded every 22.1miles. On test, travelling through a varietyof settings, from fields to B-roads andduel carriageways, we never got morethan 20 mpg out of it, but that is closeenough to the on-paper figure. Mindyou, it does cost £93,450, so if you canafford to buy it, what it does to the gallonis probably not particularly important. The rampant Range Rover Sport SVR ispaired with a velvety-smooth eight-speedautomatic gearbox. It made driving, on oroff the tarmac, so easy and, apart fromanything else, it left us free from fatigue. The garden-fresh SVR is bound to buildupon the outstanding success of thestandard ‘Sport’, which quicklybecame one of Land Rover’s mostadmired models following itsintroduction in 2005. Butgiving it the title of Barbarian might makeyou think it lacks kerb appeal whichwould be altogether wrong. In fact therange of L200’s comes in Barbarian,Challenger, Warrior, or Trojan form and allare rather huge hints as to its pedigree… But behind those rugged good looksand rather symbolic names comesluxuries such as: leather upholstery, climate control, full electric windows andan all-singing, all-dancing sat-nav, hightech multimedia centre complete withreversing camera –a god send whenyou’re manoeuvring that huge load baywhich can take up to 1060 kg’s at a time– and a whole host of other creaturecomforts. We love its high rise styling and ruggedgood looks though, after all this gives itreal kerb appeal, but it’s the excellentbuild quality that has made the L200 oneof Mitsubishi’s biggest successes. Take, for instance, the chunky floor mountedfour-wheel drive and diff-lock lever, which allows the driver to select eitherrear-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, low-ratio four-wheel drive or low-ratio four-wheel drive with a locked centredifferential through to the tractioncontrol it’s almost impossible to think ofanother truck in this sector which comesanywhere near.As mentioned the cabin is wellappointed and comes with plenty ofcubby holes and storage for all the clutterwe need to take out with us these days.Generous amounts of leg and headroomand minimal levels road and wind noisecoming through to the cabin show theattention to detail that has gone into thelatest model. It’s no slouch either capable of topspeeds of 132 mph and 0-60 mph ofaround 13 seconds, you’ve no excuse forbeing late on site again! We also liked the larger than life loadbay, which is supported by Leaf springs foradded luggability. Whilst ours was plasticlined, there is a metal lined option too and, given the space eaten up by the rear seatsin the cab, we were astonished how muchmore space there is for cargo. There’s evena removable lockable unit, which comes asan optional extra, to transform theBarbarian from pick-up to SUV. So if you’re looking for a dual purposevehicle – something that offers you theget you anywhere ability by day andfamily vehicle at night, or simply aversatile workhorse that can withstand therigors of steel toe cap boots and abuse onthe farm or building site - there’sundoubtedly an L200 to suit. And withprices for the Challenger starting at£16,499 + VAT, plus Mitsubishi’sreputation for reliability, you know you’llnever question your judgement again.Test car courtesy of Charles WarnerMitsubishi, LincolnThe Mitsubishi L200 pick-up truck has a reputation of being something of a Swiss Army knife among carsand as a recent test of the L200 Barbarian demonstrates, this reputation is well deserved.132-133_Layout 1 18/05/2015 11:57 Page 2134 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYCOUNTY MOTORINGWhether you want to zoom off on a motorbike orsimply pedal along to witness the county close up, thereare loads of opportunities – and bikers and riders of allkinds can check out the action over the summer months.Lincoln is one of the UK’s top destinations for cycling, with the Lincoln Grand Prix having been a hugely popularevent in the city for sixty years. Both races will come toa climax at the Grand Prix’s famous finish line in Castle Square infull view of both Lincoln Castle and Lincoln Cathedral. It’s all likely to make for a fabulous weekend and we can’timagine anywhere more exciting to cycle than the city ofLincoln, with its beautiful surroundings and challenging hills andcobbles. We’re also sure the city will create a fabulousatmosphere! If you fancy something even faster, however, Cadwell Park hasa great programme of motorcycle action this summer. Thehighlight is obviously the British Superbike Championship inAugust which remains one of the county’s top sporting fixtures.Renowned as the track’s “Party in the Park”, there’s a bubblingsummertime atmosphere at the event. Taking place on theweekend of 21st to 23rd August, all eyes this year will be onShane “Shaky” Byrne who will attempt to make it five wins atthe circuit, breaking his own record, but other big names suchas Ryuichi Kiyonari will be trying to put a stop to that. One change this year is that there are new grandstands at theMountain Top and Club Hairpin, which offer more space for fansand snazzy new seats – but the views over the action are just asspectacular! There’ll be more about this event in July’sLincolnshire Today. Before that, however, is a new event at Cadwell. Everyone hadsuch a fantastic time celebrating the circuit’s eightiethanniversary last year that events such as the King of Cadwell willnow be a regular part of the calendar at the Cadwell ParkInternational Classic. Held this year on 25th and 26th July, theevent will celebrate Cadwell’s long history and legendary ridersincluding Giacomo Agostini, Phil Read, John Cooper and JimRedman are among the long list of big names taking part. Offthe track there’ll also be lots of classic bikes on display andplenty more entertainment between the races.Whether you’re propelled by an engine or just your own twofeet, getting on two wheels is one of the best ways to exploreLincolnshire!PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/STEFAN SCHURR134-135_Layout 1 18/05/2015 11:58 Page 2getting back together to re-live the good times. This great line-up features Mick Avory, the originaldrummer, John Dalton from the sixties incarnationof the group and Ian Gibbons, who is still with RayDavies, alongside Dave Clarke.
