< Previous100 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYCOUNTY MOTORINGIt takes a special vehicle to impressme after testing cars and pick-upsfor some thirty odd years. After all,I’ve probably tested every car, van, pick up and SUV known to man –the good, the bad; and the truly sad.Credit where credit is due though asMitsubishi have upped the stakes yet again, thistime in the UK pick-up truck sector, with theirnew L200 Barbarian. And, quite frankly, thisnew version leaves rivals standing. This double cab chassis is the fifth-generationL200 and is the modern day version of whatwas already an accomplished load lugger witha class leading turning circle of just 5.9metres.Powered by an all-new 2.4-litre diesel that's farNew ImprovedBarbarian100-101_Layout 1 23/05/2016 14:36 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY101COUNTY MOTORINGmore economical and cleaner than the old2.5 litre unit, returning up to 44 mpg, andputs down more power too with up to180bhp and 430Nm of torque as well as adrop in co2 emissions by almost a fifth. Anew six-speed gearbox which comes asstandard, not only improves performancebut also makes a significant contribution tothe reduction of sound infiltrating the cab. In fact, that’s what hit me when I firstset off on our test – the barbarian is somuch quieter to drive, due in part to theaforementioned engine and transmissionplus the redesigned cab, with itsimproved sound proofing, upgraded seatsand upholstery, which make it a pleasureto drive; even on long journeys.Indeed, it’s so much more composed inurban areas - we were pleasantly surprisedhow hushed it remains at high speeds -and with reduced body lean onLincolnshire’s twisting A and B roads. It’s just as great on motorways makingit’s dual appeal vastly improved. But itdoesn’t stop there, the maximumpayload, whilst virtually identical to theold model can now be extended to morethan four tonnes, thanks to an improvedbraked towing capacity of 3.1 tonnes. Of course, one might argue that thename Barbarian is the wrong choice now. After all, it’s a vehicle with a refined driveand a host of creature comforts, like:electrically adjustable seats, bum-warmers, air conditioning, sat-nav, cruisecontrol, and reversing cameras. Surelythese are the sort of creature comfortsyou’d expect in an executive saloon, notfor ‘roughty-toughty’ drivers on buildingsites and farms or those towing theirhorse box to a weekend show! Visibility is excellent, too; it doesn’tactually feel like a large vehicle to drive. It’s a cinch to park and manoeuvre thanksto the parking camera and the relativelyunobstructed views and large doormirrors.Thankfully, Mitsubishi’s designers havekept it as rugged and practical as everand the vehicle copes with the mostarduous terrain, thanks in no small partto its Super Select four-wheel drive, which lets the driver move from 2 wheeldrive to four-wheel drive and high or lowratio, all at the touch of a dial. Well worthy of mention too is thatservice intervals are every 12,500 miles or12 months, and buyers benefit fromMitsubishi’s five-year/62,500-milewarranty plus a 12-year anti-corrosionperforation warranty and a three-yearpan-European roadside and home startassistance package. But I hadn’t, untilthis month and was a little concernedthat I might not get on with the newtechnology.Words like ‘regenerative braking’worried me but despite being quitenervous initially; after a few junctions Iloved it. Hardly needing to apply thebrakes, I found all I had to do wasanticipate the traffic ahead and allow thecar’s ‘energy recuperation system’ to slowme down naturally, while using theenergy it consumes to boost the onboard batteries. Now that’s clever! As stylish inside as it is out and with abuild quality that we’ve all come toexpect from the BMW stable, what reallywins you over is the way it drives. Sonippy around the city centre with instantacceleration and quick positive steeringgiving it real appeal. In fact it’s so nippy Ioften had to fight the urge to leavethose mid-life crisis types standing attraffic lights (in fact once or twice Icouldn’t fight the urge anymore and didjust that!).Visibility is great and it’s an absolutedoddle to park. Out of town I foundmyself zipping around lanes and enjoyingevery minute of it - the hushed ride andstability make it a great motorway cruisertoo. Apparently BMW have just come upwith a new battery for the i3, extendingthe range to a massive 195 milesbetween charges. And if that still doesn’tsuit you, you can pay a little more to geta range-extender version with a two-cylinder petrol engine which will powerthe rear wheels and stop the batteriesfrom ever running flat.I really fell in love with this car, despiteall my preconceptions, in fact it has tobe one of the nicest cars I’ve driven.Truth is, if my son wasn’t contemplatinguniversity, for which bank of Mum pays,I’d have one in a heartbeat. In fact, despite sharing its platform and engine rangewith the aforementioned Nissan, the Kadjar is more spacious, has a better loading space by some 42 litres, and stillundercuts it on price and emissions, making it an exceptionalproposition. Available with a range of petrol and diesel engines, the129bhp 1.6 diesel is the most powerful and comes with theadded benefit of four-wheel drive. There’s also a 1.5 dieselproducing 109 bhp and a 1.2 TCe petrol to choose from if youdon’t need that torque. A six-speed manual gearbox comes asstandard on all models, with the 1.2 petrol and 1.5 diesel alsoavailable as automatics. The model line up comes in Expression, Dynamique and theirtop of the line Signature edition. Our test car was to be themid range Dynamique and first impressions were certainlygood, with its stylish exterior reflected in an equally stylishinterior that is both comfortableand versatile. And, while theFrench manufacturer haspreviously erred on the side ofminimalism, we were veryimpressed with the Kadjar’s cabinwhich seemed relatively high specin comparison. Our model, forinstance, came loaded with dualzone climate control, automaticlights and wipers, a 7inch colourtouchscreen and sat-nav. Bluetoothallows you to pair your phone and, with it plugged in to theUSB socket in the cubby in front of the gear lever, you canlisten to your favourite music. We’re told the Signature versionseven comes with a Bose sound system - how cool is that? There’s reasonable leg room in the back and certainly asmuch room as you’re ever going to need in the front. On the road, the 1.5 Diesel delivers its power smoothlyfrom low revs and offers plenty of grip through corners withvery little body lean. The steering is light, which is a boonwhen parking and, along Lincolnshire’s highways and byways.Indeed, the Kadjar delivers better than many SUVs we’vedriven of late. The great thing about crossover’s, of course, is the view ofthe road ahead and the Kadjar doesn’t disappoint here, theelevated seating position affording a far better view of thetraffic ahead. There’s plenty of seat and steering wheeladjustment in our model too, which means no matter how tallor small you are drivers can find a comfortable drivingposition. All in all, the Kadjar proves aworthy contender to its rivals andwith prices starting at £20,195rising to £28,195 for the rangetopping 1.6 dCI Signature S Navwith 4 wheel drive, there’s a carand budget to suit every reader.
